Choose the workflow that matches what you want to do; the apps, equipment, and network requirements differ.
Choose the VR streaming workflow you need
| Your goal | What is streaming, and where? | Typical route |
|---|---|---|
| Watch immersive video | Online video plays inside your headset; it may be flat, 360°, VR180, or stereoscopic. | Use a compatible video app such as YouTube VR. |
| Play PCVR games wirelessly | A PC sends a game from its Steam library to a headset. | Use Steam Link on a supported headset, with the PC running Steam and SteamVR. |
| Show your headset view on a TV, phone, or computer | The headset’s view is cast outward to another screen. | Use the headset’s consumer casting option, or Meta Quest Developer Hub for its developer-oriented desktop workflow. |
| Livestream gameplay to an audience | The headset experience is broadcast to a public live platform. | Use a supported headset-sharing or livestreaming app, such as BeamXR Live where currently available. |
Casting and livestreaming send the headset view outward; neither is the same as watching a 360° video inside the headset.
How to watch 360° or VR video in a headset
Use YouTube VR for supported online video
- Check that your headset is supported. YouTube’s listed devices include Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, PICO 4, and Apple Vision Pro. Confirm the current list in YouTube Help’s YouTube VR setup guide, since device support can change.
- Install and open YouTube VR from the headset’s app store, then find a video by searching with the app’s voice or keyboard controls.
- Choose the appropriate viewing mode. On Quest, YouTube VR offers immersive and panel modes. Immersive viewing is for compatible 360° or VR180 content; panel mode presents video on a virtual screen.
- Check the format and quality available for that video. The app provides filters for 360°, VR180, 4K, 3D, and captions. YouTube says the app supports 8K resolution on Quest 3; its page also describes up to 4K for purchased movies on Meta Quest. Actual choices depend on the device and individual video.
A flat video shown on a large virtual screen is still flat video, not a 360° recording. To fill your field of view with a spherical or stereoscopic image, both the video format and the playback app must support it.
Use another compatible video app for local files or other services
For video outside YouTube, choose a headset-compatible app or browser that supports the file or service you intend to use. Steam documents its Steam 360 Video tool for immersive playback on SteamVR-compatible headsets. Bigscreen Beta is another optional Quest app; its Meta Store listing describes local video playback, including side-by-side and over-under 3D files, Windows desktop streaming, and YouTube viewing. Check the current Meta Store listing for availability and details in your region.

How to stream PCVR games to a headset
Steam Link sends games in a Steam library from a Windows PC running Steam and SteamVR to a supported headset. It is a PC-game streaming workflow, not a universal way to watch online 360° video.
Check the PC, headset, and network first
- PC: Steam’s minimum requirements include Windows 10 or newer, a supported PC GPU, and SteamVR.
- Headset: Use a headset on Steam’s supported-device list for this feature. See Steam Link for Meta, HTC and PICO headsets.
- Wireless network: Steam specifies a router using a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum; it recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Put the PC and headset on the same network for setup.
Connect with Steam Link
- On the PC, sign in to Steam and make sure SteamVR is installed and available.
- Connect the PC and headset to the same network. For wireless play, check that the headset is using the router’s 5 GHz network rather than assuming the network name alone guarantees the band.
- Install Steam Link in the headset and open it.
- Follow Steam Link’s on-screen prompts to find and pair with the PC, then launch a game from the Steam library.
If the connection is unstable, check the PC-to-router and router-to-headset links before buying new hardware. Steam’s Wi-Fi minimum and recommendation are requirements for this Steam Link workflow, not a guarantee that every home network will deliver the same latency or image quality.

Use Meta Horizon Link for its PC-connected workflow
Meta documents a separate PC connection workflow through Meta Horizon Link on Windows, which can connect by USB or Wi-Fi. For the specified wired setup, Meta’s hardware guidance calls for a USB-C data cable rated for 5 GB/s or higher. These instructions apply to that PC-connected workflow; they do not mean a cable is required to watch online headset video. See Meta’s Hardware Setup guidance, updated September 10, 2026.
How to cast the headset view to a TV, phone, or computer
Meta describes casting as sending a headset’s view in real time to a phone, tablet, TV, or browser. Use the consumer casting option available for your device and destination. This is useful for showing someone else what the wearer sees; it is not the same as broadcasting publicly to a livestream platform.

Cast to a desktop with Meta Quest Developer Hub
Meta Quest Developer Hub (MQDH) documents a developer-oriented option for casting to a desktop and recording. Meta’s Sharing documentation describes device sharing, while its Debugging Tools documentation covers MQDH casting controls.
- Install and open Meta Quest Developer Hub on the desktop.
- For wireless casting, connect the headset and desktop to the same Wi-Fi network and enable ADB over Wi-Fi in Device Manager.
- Connect to the headset in MQDH and open its casting tools.
- Set the available bitrate, resolution, and frame-rate controls to suit your recording or viewing needs, then start the cast. MQDH can also record video to headset storage.
Meta’s documented MQDH recording flow does not yet support microphone audio. Do not assume a desktop recording includes the wearer’s voice.

How to livestream a headset experience to an audience
Public livestreaming sends the headset experience to a live platform rather than merely displaying it on a nearby screen. Meta identifies livestreaming as a device-sharing capability. The exact app, headset support, and destination-platform options depend on current availability.
Consider BeamXR Live for a Quest broadcast
Meta’s developer story describes BeamXR Live as broadcasting Quest VR or mixed-reality experiences to Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms, with overlays, live chat, and clipping. Treat it as a named example, not the only possible option. Check the app’s current listing and supported platforms before setting up a stream. Meta’s story quotes the BeamXR team on a move from software to hardware encoding; that is the team’s account, not an independent benchmark or a performance guarantee for other users. Quality, network, and comfort considerations
Immersive video can demand more of the playback device and network than a conventional flat video. Meta’s media requirements are developer guidance for apps on Meta devices, not a universal consumer-network guarantee. The guidance, updated August 28, 2026, recommends adaptive bitrate profiles, gives a 4 Mbps minimum threshold for rectilinear 2D content, recommends 48–60 frames per second for immersive media, and describes 30–60 pixels per degree as a target range constrained by the device’s decoder and display. Meta says AV1 will work on Quest 3 and above only. See Meta’s media requirements and guidelines.
- Do not treat the 4 Mbps figure as a blanket connection requirement for every 360°, VR180, stereoscopic, or PCVR stream; Meta specifies it for rectilinear 2D content.
- Use the quality and format options actually offered by the app and video. A headset’s maximum supported resolution does not mean every title is available at that resolution.
- For PCVR, assess the whole path between PC, router, and headset. Wi-Fi generation alone does not establish the experience you will get.
- Meta notes that streaming performance and latency vary with the user’s environment. Its developer guidance emphasizes handling poor connectivity without freezing, judder, or inconsistent positional tracking.
Meta also has streaming-related requirements for covered Quest apps that obtain immersive content from virtual devices or cloud sources: notices about streamed content and connectivity are required, and such sources are not allowed for those covered apps unless expressly approved in writing. This is a policy detail for the specified app category, not a general ban on consumer VR streaming services. See Meta’s VRC.Quest.Streaming.1, VRC.Quest.Streaming.2, and VRC.Quest.Streaming.3 requirements, each updated July 31, 2024.
Common VR streaming problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely reason | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The app is missing or will not run on the headset. | The headset may not be on that app’s supported-device list, or availability may differ by region. | Check the app’s current official listing and supported-device page before buying hardware or troubleshooting the network. |
| A video appears on a screen instead of surrounding the viewer. | The video may be flat, the app may be in panel mode, or the format may not be supported for immersive playback. | Check the video’s format and available 360°, VR180, or 3D options, then switch to immersive mode if the app offers it. |
| Steam Link cannot find or pair with the PC. | The PC may not be running Steam/SteamVR, the devices may be on different networks, or the headset/network may not meet Steam’s requirements. | Sign in to Steam on the PC, verify SteamVR, put both devices on the same network, and check headset support and the 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 minimum. |
| Wireless PCVR stutters or feels delayed. | Performance and latency vary by environment; the wireless link or PC may be limiting the stream. | Check both wireless legs and the PC’s supported hardware. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E for Steam Link; verify the setup before replacing equipment. |
| MQDH desktop casting does not connect wirelessly. | The desktop and headset may not share Wi-Fi, or ADB over Wi-Fi may not be enabled. | Put them on the same Wi-Fi network and enable ADB over Wi-Fi in MQDH Device Manager. |
| A desktop recording lacks the wearer’s voice. | MQDH’s documented recording flow does not support microphone audio. | Do not rely on that flow to capture voice; choose a separate method only after confirming its current compatibility and audio support. |
Should you buy a router or cable?
Buy equipment only when the workflow calls for it and your current setup fails the stated requirements. Wireless Steam Link has a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 minimum and a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E recommendation. A cable is relevant for the specified wired Meta Horizon Link setup, for which Meta’s hardware page calls for a USB-C data cable rated at 5 GB/s or higher. Neither item is a general requirement for watching YouTube VR or casting through every available method.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live 24/7; it does not stream a camera feed or send VR gameplay to Twitch or other platforms. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly price is $9.99 per month.
