To troubleshoot OBS Studio crashing, first note when it fails, then test one change at a time: launch OBS in safe mode, temporarily close applications that hook into graphics, check system compatibility, and simplify demanding scenes or output settings if the crash happens under load. These checks help narrow the cause; none can identify it without evidence from your specific system.
Start by recording what happens
Before changing settings, write down the details that will help you compare each test:
- Your operating system and OBS Studio version.
- When the crash occurs: at startup, when opening a source, when switching scenes, when starting a stream or recording, or after a long session.
- The exact action immediately before the crash.
- Whether you use third-party plugins, scripts, websockets, overlays, GPU monitoring displays, or other capture and recording applications.
Change only one condition at a time, then repeat the action that normally triggers the crash. If you change several things together, you may not know which change affected the result.
Test whether a third-party extension is involved
OBS Studio has a safe-mode launch parameter that disables third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets. The OBS Project documents it as a way to “Force OBS to start in safe mode, disabling all third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets.” See OBS Project’s Launch Parameters guide.

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Close OBS Studio if it is open.
- Launch OBS using its documented
--safe-modeparameter. Use the launch method appropriate to your operating system and installation; consult the official guide rather than assuming a particular shortcut or executable path. - Repeat the action that previously caused the crash.
- If OBS behaves differently in safe mode, investigate extensions. Re-enable or add them back selectively, testing after each change, to narrow down whether one is associated with the problem.
A different result in safe mode points to extensions as an area to investigate; it does not identify a particular plugin, script, or websocket as the cause.
Temporarily close software that may conflict with OBS
Some applications hook graphics functions and can interfere with OBS. The OBS Project notes that third-party applications can cause crashes or other unusual behavior, and lists examples such as on-screen display and monitoring tools, overlays, and other capture or recording software. See OBS Project’s Known Application Conflicts guide.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Close overlays, GPU monitoring displays, and other capture or recording applications you normally run alongside OBS.
- Reopen OBS and repeat the same action that triggers the crash.
- If the behavior changes, reopen the closed applications one at a time, repeating the test after each, to narrow down which application may be involved.
Temporarily closing software is a diagnostic test, not proof of a conflict. Avoid leaving a tool disabled permanently unless you have confirmed it is involved and are comfortable with that change.
Check system and graphics compatibility
Compare your operating system and graphics configuration with the requirements listed by the OBS Project in its System Requirements guide. Treat this as a baseline check, not a diagnosis: OBS warns that meeting its requirements does not guarantee a computer can handle a particular streaming or recording workload. Requirements and platform support can change, so consult the current guidance for your OBS version.

If the crash involves capture on a laptop
Some laptops have more than one GPU. If the failure occurs while using capture—particularly display capture—check which GPU OBS and the relevant display or capture setup are using. Follow the conditions and version-specific guidance in the OBS Project’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide. GPU selection guidance is relevant to laptop capture cases; it is not a general explanation for every OBS crash.
Reduce workload if the crash follows a demanding scene or output
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If crashing is closely associated with a complex scene, starting output, or sustained streaming or recording, test a simpler scene and more modest output settings. The OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide discusses reducing GPU demand and scene complexity when addressing performance overload.

- Use a simpler scene for the test, with fewer active sources and effects where practical.
- Try less demanding output settings if the crash occurs only when streaming or recording.
- Retest the same action and compare with your original setup.
Keep this test separate from safe-mode and conflict checks. A crash during a demanding workload does not, by itself, establish that performance overload is the cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If OBS still crashes
If the checks do not change the behavior, collect the crash log and relevant system details, then use current, platform-specific OBS guidance or seek help with that evidence. A log needs to be interpreted in context; do not assume a particular log entry proves the cause. The steps above can help you report whether the crash reproduces in safe mode, with other graphics-related applications closed, or with a simpler scene and output configuration.
