For most live-streaming setups, start with one soft, adjustable LED key light near face level, aimed at you—not at the background. Check your camera preview, then adjust the light’s position and brightness until your face looks evenly lit without distracting shadows or glare. The best choice depends on your room, framing, camera, glasses, skin tone and preferred look; no single light or setting suits every creator.
How to choose a light for live streaming
Choose for your space and the image you want, rather than buying by lumen rating alone. Compare the light’s output and the conditions behind that rating, its diffusion, color controls, mounting footprint, power connection and control method. Product figures below are manufacturer specifications or descriptions, not independent head-to-head test results; availability and specifications may vary by region, revision and power configuration.
Choose a compact monitor light for a tight desk
A monitor-mounted light can reduce desk clutter when your camera is close to the screen. Check what mount and power source are included, and whether the light’s output changes with the power source. For example, Elgato says Key Light Neo can connect to a computer USB port, but its maximum output depends on the source; its support guide lists approximately 400 lm from computer USB-A, 700 lm from computer USB-C, or 1,000 lm with an external supply rated at least 5V/3A. Choose a separate panel or desktop light when you need more positioning freedom
A larger panel or separately mounted desktop light may give you more output or positioning range, provided you have room for its mount. Elgato lists its Key Light at 2,800 lumens, adjustable from 2900–7000 K, with CRI above 94% and power up to 45 W. For Key Light Air MK.2, Elgato lists up to 2,100 lumens depending on power source, adjustable 2900–7000 K and CRI above 94%; its comparison lists USB-C, adapter or battery-bank power. Logitech G describes Litra Beam as a desktop streaming key light with positioning and onboard or G HUB brightness and color controls. Logitech describes Litra Glow as a monitor-oriented streaming light with a diffuser and desktop software controls for brightness and color temperature. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance assessments: Litra Beam and Litra Glow.
Understand the specifications before comparing
- Lumens describe light output. A larger lumen figure alone does not tell you how soft the light is, how colors render, or how your face will look in your room.
- CRI concerns how accurately colors appear under a light; it is different from output and color temperature. Elgato says CRI above 90 is generally good for camera use and above 94 is a stronger target. Treat these as Elgato’s guidance, not a universally established industry standard. See Elgato’s CRI guide.
- Color temperature, given in Kelvin (K), describes whether white light appears warmer or cooler. Match it to the room and set camera white balance consistently; there is no universal Kelvin setting for every room.
- Diffusion and softness affect how light falls on the subject. A product’s diffuser or “soft” marketing description does not guarantee the same result at every distance or with every camera.
Price and local availability were not established for the models covered here, so check current regional listings before buying. A quoted lumen number is not a reliable standalone basis for declaring one differently sized light the winner.

Set up your streaming light
- Look at the room’s existing light. Notice daylight, overhead lights and lamps that will appear on your face. Avoid mixing noticeably different color casts without checking the camera image.
- Place one soft key light near face level. Aim it toward your face and inspect the actual camera or stream preview. Elgato’s video-conferencing guide recommends soft light at face level when repositioning is not possible and advises checking whether the face is evenly lit. - Adjust one variable at a time. If you see harsh shadows, glare or uneven illumination, try changing the light’s position, softness or brightness. If needed, add a second fill source and check the preview again; extra lights are not automatically better.
- Set white balance and exposure after arranging the lights. Keep the lighting arrangement stable, then set your camera so the image looks consistent. Exact camera settings depend on the model and room; the sources cited here do not establish universal exposure or white-balance values.
- Add background lighting only for the look you want. Colorful background light is optional atmosphere, not a replacement for usable face light; RGB lighting does not itself establish that the face is well lit.
Common lighting problems and fixes
- Your face has hard shadows: Reposition the key light near face level, adjust its direction or softness, and recheck the preview. Consider a fill source only if the shadow remains distracting.
- Your face looks washed out or shiny: Reduce brightness or change the light’s position, then inspect the camera preview again. The right adjustment depends on your camera, framing and room.
- Your face and background have noticeably different color casts: Check which room lights are contributing, reduce conflicting sources if practical, and adjust the light and camera white balance for a more consistent image.
- A USB-powered light seems dimmer than expected: Confirm the connected port or power supply against the manufacturer’s rating. For Key Light Neo, Elgato lists different approximate outputs for computer USB-A, computer USB-C and an external supply rated at least 5V/3A.
- Your light cannot be positioned where you need it: Reassess the mount and desk space. A monitor-mounted light may suit a compact setup; a separate panel or desktop light may offer more placement options if you have room.
