To set up a hotkey in Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Hotkeys, find the action you want, click its hotkey field, and press the key combination you want to assign. You can configure controls for stream actions as well as individual scenes and sources.
Assign a hotkey in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Streamlabs Desktop.
- Click the Settings cog.
- Select Hotkeys.
- Find the action you want to control and click its hotkey field.
- Press the key combination you want to use. Streamlabs assigns that combination to the action.
- Scroll through the panel to configure hotkeys for individual scenes or sources, if needed.
Streamlabs recommends using a combination of at least two keys to reduce the chance of triggering an action accidentally while using another application. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee against conflicts.
Choose what your hotkeys control
Global stream and recording actions
The Hotkeys panel includes actions such as starting or stopping a stream, muting the microphone, saving a replay, and skipping alerts. Find the specific action in the panel and bind it using the steps above. Available actions can vary with your setup; the sources do not establish universal default bindings, so check the field in your installed version rather than assuming a particular shortcut is already assigned.
Scenes and individual sources
Hotkeys can also show or hide items such as an alert box or display capture in a particular scene. Scroll to the relevant scene or source entry, click its hotkey field, and press the combination you want. Streamlabs’ related tutorial also describes scene and marker actions, including creating a video marker or timestamp with a custom title for later editing.

Fix a Show/Hide hotkey that does not respond
If a Show/Hide hotkey for a source is unresponsive, Streamlabs’ support page documents toggling Dual Output off and then on as a workaround. To try it, open the relevant Dual Output control in Streamlabs Desktop, switch it off, then switch it back on and test the hotkey. The support page has conflicting status and date information, so this workaround should not be taken as proof that the issue is either fixed for every version or still affects every user. If it does not help, check Streamlabs’ current support page and compare its guidance with your installed version.
Do you need a stream controller?
No dedicated controller is required: the setup uses your keyboard, and Streamlabs describes native hotkeys as an alternative to buying a stream deck. A physical controller such as an Elgato Stream Deck or Loupedeck is an optional choice if you prefer dedicated buttons; it is not necessary for assigning or using the shortcuts covered here.
