There is no single best streaming preset for Fortnite Chapter 2: the right settings depend on your PC, encoder, upload capacity, scene complexity, and streaming platform. Start by making Fortnite stable, choose an OBS output your computer and connection can sustain, then test the complete stream before going live. This guide covers both Fortnite’s in-game video settings and OBS settings; the game’s rendered frame rate and the frame rate viewers receive are separate.
Start with a stable Fortnite game
For a one-PC setup, Fortnite and stream encoding share system resources. Check your PC against Epic’s current Fortnite system requirements, but treat them as a baseline, not a guarantee that the game and a stream will run smoothly together. Epic notes that meeting minimum requirements does not mean the game will run at its highest settings.
Use a low-load baseline if performance is unstable
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance recommends setting Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100% when addressing graphics issues. That is a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal streaming profile. If the game remains stable while streaming, increase settings gradually and check performance after each change.
When CPU or GPU resources are tight, close background applications. Epic’s Performance Mode guidance describes a tradeoff: reduced visual quality can lower memory use and ease CPU/GPU load, potentially improving frame rate on supported setups. Epic also describes deselecting high-resolution textures through the launcher’s installation options.

The article’s historical Performance Mode illustrations reported 24 to 61 FPS for one laptop and 18 to 45 FPS for another, comparing low scalability with Performance Mode at 720p. Those examples describe the systems in that article, not expected results for your PC or a current Fortnite configuration.
Choose an OBS output profile your setup can sustain
In OBS, go to Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is typically the monitor or game-source working resolution; Output (Scaled) Resolution is what the stream actually sends. Common FPS Value sets the output frame rate. Do not assume that a game running at a high frame rate means the broadcast is being sent at that rate.

Use 30 FPS if a 60-FPS output makes the system unstable; OBS warns that streaming at 60 FPS can be much more demanding than at 30 FPS. Epic Developer Community’s “Technical Performance in Fortnite” says, “There are currently no publishing requirements to hit a particular frame rate, however 30-60 FPS is ideal depending on platform.” That statement concerns Fortnite performance documentation, not a required OBS broadcast standard.
Compare practical starting points
| Stream output | Upload guidance in Epic’s beginner guide | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 FPS | 3 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth starting point or when reducing stream and encoding load matters most. |
| 720p at 60 FPS | 4.5 Mbps | When smoother motion matters and the PC and sustained upload can handle it. |
| 1080p at 30 FPS | 4.5 Mbps | When sharper resolution matters more than 60-FPS output. |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 6 Mbps | Only when the PC, encoder, service limits, and upload connection sustain the higher demand. |
The upload figures are illustrative recommendations from the Epic Games Store beginner streaming guide, not guaranteed current requirements or a substitute for checking your platform’s latest rules and testing your actual connection. Higher resolutions are likely to need more upload bandwidth. These profiles are tradeoffs, not a ranking: 720p/60 is not universally better than 1080p/30.

Set bitrate and audio for your platform
In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate for the streaming service you use. The bitrate must fit both your sustained upload capacity and the service’s current limits. A bitrate that exceeds either can cause dropped frames or an unstable stream.
OBS’s overview uses a 6000 kbps maximum for Twitch as an example service limit; it is not a platform-independent recommendation, and platform guidance can change. Check Twitch’s current requirements if you stream there rather than assuming that example remains current. OBS suggests around 160 kbps for audio, with lower settings possible when upload capacity is limited. Keep enough upload headroom for normal network variation instead of setting the stream at the full result of a brief speed test.

Choose an encoder and test the whole scene
In Settings > Output, select an encoder compatible with your setup. The load depends on the encoder, output resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; a PC that meets a game’s minimum requirements is not thereby guaranteed to stream or record smoothly. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not as proof that the resulting settings are stable.
- Set Fortnite to a stable graphics baseline and close unnecessary background applications.
- In OBS, set Base (Canvas) Resolution for your working source and Output (Scaled) Resolution for the viewer-facing stream.
- Choose the output FPS, encoder, and bitrate in light of your hardware, sustained upload, and the service’s current limits.
- Test the actual scenes you plan to use, including gameplay and any overlays or capture sources. Check for dropped frames, encoding overload, and game stutter.
- If the test is unstable, reduce output resolution or FPS, lower game graphics settings, simplify scenes, or adjust bitrate to fit the connection; change one factor at a time and test again.
OBS advises testing scenes and performance before a first live stream. A short test helps reveal whether the bottleneck is the game, encoding, or network before viewers are affected.

Improve connection consistency
Epic recommends a wired Ethernet connection for a strong, consistent connection. A wired Ethernet cable enables that connection, but it cannot improve a weak ISP service, fix encoding overload, or guarantee a stable stream. The Epic beginner guide’s illustrative upload figures are 3 Mbps for 720p/30 FPS, 4.5 Mbps for 720p/60 FPS or 1080p/30 FPS, and 6 Mbps for 1080p/60 FPS; your service’s current requirements and a sustained upload test still matter.
Keep Fortnite content and stream rules in mind
Streaming settings cannot resolve copyright or platform-policy issues. Use gameplay, music, overlays, and other material you have permission to broadcast, and check the current rules of your streaming service. A technically stable stream can still be removed or restricted if its content violates those rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video rather than broadcast live Fortnite gameplay, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it handles uploaded video, not a live camera feed. It supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
