Grow a podcast by making it valuable to a clearly defined listener, helping that listener discover it in places they already use, and measuring whether discovery turns into engaged, returning listeners. Set a baseline before trying promotional tactics, then keep what works and adjust what does not. No single channel or platform feature guarantees growth.

1. Decide who the show is for

Start with a specific intended listener, not “anyone who likes podcasts.” Consider where that person lives, what they care about, which other shows they listen to, and where they take part in conversations online. Spotify for Creators recommends matching outreach to a show’s purpose: a business-oriented podcast, for example, may find relevant listeners through professional networks or email.

This definition helps you make practical choices: which topics to cover, what language to use in a description or trailer, and where promotion is likely to reach people with a reason to listen.

2. Set a goal and record a baseline

Choose what “growth” means for your show before judging its performance. A larger audience may be the goal, but a raw number alone may not show whether the show is reaching the right people or helping your business or community.

  • Reach: impressions, discovery sources, or new listeners.
  • Listening: episode plays or consumption, using the platform’s stated definition.
  • Engagement: retention, completion behavior, comments, or other meaningful responses.
  • Return: listeners who come back for another episode or continue listening over time.
  • Outcome: a relevant action, such as an inquiry or signup, if the podcast supports a separate business or community goal.

Write down the measure, its source, and the time period you are using. That baseline lets you compare later results without confusing a one-off spike with sustained progress.

3. Make the show’s value clear to newcomers

A potential listener should be able to understand what the show offers and whether it suits them. A short trailer can introduce the podcast and help someone decide whether to try it. Make its premise specific: explain the subject or recurring benefit, rather than relying only on a broad label such as “conversations about business.”

4. Promote in places your intended listeners already use

Choose channels based on audience habits and the format of your show. Spotify for Creators names TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn as examples of channels where people discover podcasts. Its 2024 guide reports that 42% of people discover new podcasts through channels like those. Treat that as a dated figure reported by Spotify for Creators, not a guarantee for every show or audience; the guide does not establish the underlying study methodology.

  • Social posts: Adapt the hook and format to where your audience participates rather than reposting identical material everywhere.
  • Professional networks or email: For a business-focused show, these may fit better than broad social promotion when they reach people with a relevant interest.
  • Comments and replies: Where available, use them to continue a genuine conversation around an episode, not just to broadcast a link.

Spotify for Creators also lists polls, audience-retention analytics, and impression analytics among its tools. Availability and features can change, so check the current product in your market before planning around a specific option.

5. Read analytics as a path from discovery to return

Promotion is useful only if you can see what happens after someone encounters it. Review the stages separately: where people found the show, whether they started an episode, how much they consumed, and whether they came back. Compare these measures over a consistent period and use them to decide what to test next.

  • Discovery: Which sources or impressions are bringing people to the show?
  • Listening: Are those people starting episodes? Check how the service defines a play.
  • Retention: At what point do listeners continue or stop, where that information is available?
  • Return: Are listeners coming back for later episodes or over time?

Spotify announced audience segments, episode comparisons, and engagement information in June 2026. It also changed its Spotify play definition: an episode must be watched or listened to for at least 30 seconds to count as a play. Do not compare that platform-specific measure directly with a play, download, or listener measure from another service unless the definitions match.

Apple Podcasts provides show performance analytics. Apple notes that some other consumption measures, including downloads or subscriptions, may be available from the hosting provider or server. When comparing services, label each number with its source and definition; “plays,” “listeners,” and “downloads” are not interchangeable.

6. Run a repeatable growth cycle

  1. Choose one audience and one goal. State who you want to reach and what result would matter.
  2. Record your baseline. Note the current figures, their platform, definitions, and time period.
  3. Make one focused promotion test. Pick a channel or feature that fits the audience and show format.
  4. Check the whole journey. Compare discovery with listening, engagement, and returning listeners rather than stopping at impressions.
  5. Keep, revise, or drop the experiment. Use the evidence to choose the next test, and avoid treating a single result as proof of a universal tactic.

Spotify for Creators’ July 29, 2024 guide puts the timeframe plainly: “Sustained growth requires time and effort.” A useful plan is one you can repeat, measure, and improve—not a promise of fast results.

Common measurement mistakes

  • Chasing a large total without a goal: A rise in impressions may not mean more engaged or returning listeners. Compare the metric with the outcome you chose.
  • Mixing unlike numbers: Record whether a figure is a play, unique audience, download, subscription, or another measure, and name the service or hosting source.
  • Assuming a feature is universal: Check regional availability before relying on features such as Spotify clips, which Spotify for Creators describes as beta in select markets.
  • Expecting one post to carry the show: Treat promotion as a series of tests. Review results over a consistent period and adjust based on the audience’s response.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you also want to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream—for example, a continuous video companion to your podcast—StreamNeo can run that stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.

Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
