Then test for overlays or recording-software conflicts, verify that OBS and the game use compatible GPUs, and try Window Capture if the game cannot be hooked. Follow the checks below in order; several fixes depend on your game, Windows version, or OBS setup.
1. Check the Game Capture source and target
- In OBS, select the scene with the problem and make sure the Game Capture source exists and is visible in the Sources list. Check that it is not hidden behind another source.
- Open the source properties. For a fullscreen game, try the fullscreen capture mode. To capture one particular game, choose the specific-window mode and select the game while it is running.
- Keep the game active while selecting it, then bring it to the foreground and check the preview again. If you regularly switch between games, OBS also offers a hotkey capture mode.
- For an initial test, leave the other Game Capture options at their defaults. OBS describes fullscreen, specific-window, and hotkey capture in its Game Capture Source guide.
2. Try running OBS as administrator
Some games require OBS Studio to run with administrator privileges for Game Capture to work. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test the game again. This is a game-dependent check, not a setting that every user needs to change. OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide identifies administrator access as a possible fix.
3. Check for software that conflicts with capture
Game Capture hooks into a game’s rendering process. Another overlay, performance display, recording app, or some security software can interfere with that process.
- Temporarily close game overlays, FPS counters, monitoring displays, and other recording or streaming applications, then reopen the game and test the preview.
- OBS specifically notes MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner as common conflicts. Other overlay products may also cause problems; close them one at a time to identify the source.
- If the problem persists and your security software is blocking OBS, check its settings and allow OBS where appropriate. Do not disable or uninstall antivirus or firewall protection indiscriminately.

4. Distinguish a black preview from a failed capture
Some fullscreen games stop rendering when minimized or switched away from with Alt+Tab. That can make the OBS preview black while the game is in the background even if capture works when the game is active.
- Bring the game to the foreground and check whether the preview returns.
- Alternatively, record a short test, play the game, then review the recording. You can also keep OBS visible on a second monitor while leaving the game open.
- If the game still cannot be captured, try windowed or borderless fullscreen mode and use Window Capture instead of Game Capture.

5. Check the game’s graphics API
Some games have compatibility problems with a particular graphics API. OBS notes that certain DirectX 12 games may crash with OBS or show frame issues; if the game offers the option, try switching it to DirectX 11 and test again. OBS’s guide gives Fortnite as an example of a game for which switching from DX12 to DX11 may help, and describes Window Capture alternatives for Counter-Strike 2 and Destiny 2. These are examples, not a complete compatibility list, so check the game’s current graphics options and test the relevant alternative.
6. Make OBS and the game use compatible GPUs
On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, Windows may run OBS on an integrated GPU while the game uses a discrete GPU. OBS says that this mismatch can prevent Game Capture from working.

- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add or select OBS Studio, open its options, and choose High performance to assign it to the discrete GPU. Windows labels can vary by version and device.
- Restart OBS, launch the game, and test Game Capture again.
- If the black screen remains, check the game’s graphics assignment too. The game and OBS need to use compatible GPUs for Game Capture.
OBS describes the Windows GPU assignment approach for Windows 10 version 1809 and later and Windows 11 in its laptop troubleshooting guide. If your Windows interface or GPU software differs, use the equivalent graphics preference for your system.
7. Switch capture sources if the game cannot be hooked
Game Capture is a Windows source for capturing DirectX or OpenGL games, but some titles do not work with it. OBS states that “There are a very small number of games that do not work with Game Capture.” For those cases, compare the available sources:

For older games or emulators that do not work with modern game-hooking, try Window Capture or Display Capture. OBS’s cross-GPU Display Capture instructions are separate from its Game Capture GPU-matching advice. If automatic capture selection does not work, OBS says to try its Windows 10 capture method manually. A capture card is relevant when bringing an external console’s video into OBS: add it as a Video Capture Source. Another option is to capture a console’s remote-play application window, which depends on a sufficiently fast network connection. These are console-input setups, not general fixes for a black PC Game Capture source. OBS outlines the distinction in its capture card setup guide.

Quick diagnosis by symptom
- Black only when you Alt+Tab: return to the game or check a short recording; fullscreen minimization may stop the game’s rendering.
- Black while the game is active: confirm the source mode and target, then test administrator access and close possible overlay or recording conflicts.
- Black on a laptop or multi-GPU system: check whether OBS and the game are assigned to compatible GPUs, then restart OBS after changing its assignment.
- Only one game fails: check its graphics API options and try Window Capture, or windowed/borderless mode where appropriate.
- Trying to capture console video: use the console workflow with a Video Capture Source or remote-play window, rather than treating it as a PC Game Capture problem.
