Push video on demand (Push VoD) is a way of delivering video in which a provider sends selected programs to a viewer’s device before the viewer asks for them. The device stores the programs locally—often on a PVR-capable set-top box—so the viewer can choose one later. “PVOD” also commonly means premium video on demand, a different concept about premium titles or access pricing.
How Push VoD works
Unlike a conventional stream that starts delivering a title after a viewer selects it, Push VoD moves selected content to a local device ahead of that selection. ETSI describes it as an on-demand service in which content is loaded onto user devices for future use.
- The provider selects or schedules programs. The available selection is chosen by the service, rather than being an unlimited catalogue requested title by title.
- Content is delivered in advance. A provider sends the selected programs to the viewer’s device; in some systems, delivery can use spare broadcast capacity.
- The device stores the programs. A common described setup uses a PVR-capable set-top box, which keeps pushed titles in local storage.
- The viewer chooses a stored title. Playback can begin from the locally stored copy rather than waiting for that title to arrive over a live internet connection.
Ofcom’s description of the model combines near-video-on-demand (near VoD) with a PVR-capable set-top box: programs can be sent beforehand, stored in a reserved part of the recorder, and selected there. That storage area is finite, so the local selection is limited by the device’s capacity.
Push VoD compared with streaming, near VoD, TVOD, SVOD and premium VoD
These labels do not all describe the same thing. Push VoD describes delivery and storage; TVOD and SVOD describe ways access is sold. Premium VoD describes a premium positioning or access offer. A service could therefore combine labels from different rows rather than choosing just one.

| Term | What it describes | What the viewer experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Push VoD | Delivery and local storage | Selected programs arrive on the device before the viewer requests them and are available to choose later. |
| Pull or on-demand streaming | Delivery after selection | The viewer selects a title, which is then delivered or streamed. Video on demand generally lets users choose what to view and when. |
| Near VoD | Staggered scheduled starts | The viewer chooses from scheduled start times for a program, rather than receiving a fully individualized stream. Push VoD can combine this approach with PVR storage. |
| TVOD | Transactional payment | The viewer pays for an individual rental or purchase; rental access is often time-limited. |
| SVOD | Subscription payment | The viewer pays a recurring subscription for catalogue access. |
| Premium VoD (PVOD) | Premium positioning or access model | A premium title may be offered at a higher price or with early access. This is not the same as sending a title to a device in advance. |
Benefits and limitations
Playback can be ready sooner
Because the title is stored before the viewer selects it, the viewer may not have to wait for that title to download at the moment of selection. This is a benefit implied by the delivery method, not a guarantee of buffer-free playback in every system.
Less reliance on a real-time broadband stream
Ofcom’s historical account describes Push VoD in systems facing connectivity or bandwidth constraints. That does not establish how a particular current service works, or mean that every implementation operates without an internet connection.

- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
The catalogue is limited by local storage
A recorder can hold only so much content. Its capacity, and the portion reserved for pushed programs, constrains how many titles can be available at once.
Availability depends on the provider and device
The described setup requires a compatible PVR-capable receiver, but that does not establish compatibility for any particular current device, provider, or region. Confirm support with the TV platform or provider before buying hardware.

What equipment do you need?
The mechanism described by ETSI and Ofcom uses a user device with local storage; Ofcom’s example is a PVR-capable set-top box. The available sources do not confirm which present-day consumer devices or regional services support Push VoD. Before purchasing a PVR set-top box, check with your provider that it supports the service and that the device is compatible with your TV platform and region.

Push VoD preloads video onto a viewer’s device for later, on-demand selection. StreamNeo is a separate service: it loops uploaded videos as a live stream on YouTube from the cloud; it does not preload programs onto a viewer’s set-top box or provide Push VoD. If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel, you can learn about StreamNeo and start a free first day without a card.
