Choose a live streaming API by deciding what viewers must be able to do and how quickly the video must respond—not by picking a universal “best” provider. A one-way broadcast, an interactive stream, and a two-way video session are different technical products. Match that experience to a delivery approach, then compare providers using the same workload, devices, regions, and cost assumptions.

Start with the experience you are building

Write down what a viewer can do, what the host can do, and how quickly the video must reflect an action. The answer determines whether you need broadcast delivery, low-latency broadcast, or real-time communication.

One-way broadcast

Use this model when viewers mainly watch and do not need to speak or appear in the stream. Standard HLS is often a fit when broad playback reach and tolerance for buffering matter more than an immediate response. Mux describes its standard HLS latency as 20+ seconds on its product page and typically about 25–30 seconds in its FAQ; these are Mux descriptions, not guarantees for every HLS system.

Interactive broadcast

Use low-latency broadcast when people watch one shared program but need actions such as bids, polls, reactions, or synchronized activities to feel timely. Define the maximum acceptable delay between the live event and what a viewer sees. Amazon IVS supports timed metadata and chat features. Mux positions its LL-HLS mode for audience engagement, auctions, gaming, and shopping.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Two-way real-time sessions

Choose a WebRTC-oriented real-time system when participants need to speak, appear on screen, or take turns becoming speakers. LiveKit describes its connections as duplex and supports synchronized participants and chat/data messages. Mux explicitly says its Live Streaming API is not intended for two-way video communication.

Broadcast or OTT with extensive control

If your team needs granular control over transcoding, packaging, resilience, ad insertion, DRM, players, or CDN choices, compare a more configurable media-services workflow with a managed product. AWS distinguishes its Elemental services from the more managed Amazon IVS offering.

Understand the delivery choices and latency claims

HLS, LL-HLS, and WebRTC solve different problems. HLS and LL-HLS deliver a broadcast to viewers; WebRTC is designed for interactive, duplex sessions. A shorter delay can improve interaction, but it does not automatically make a service the right choice: the participant model, player support, operating burden, and cost still matter.

Approach or service description Published latency figure How to interpret it
Mux standard HLS Mux’s live product page says 20+ seconds; its FAQ says typically about 25–30 seconds. These are two Mux descriptions of standard HLS, not a universal protocol promise.
Mux LL-HLS Mux’s product page lists 4–7 seconds; its FAQ says as low as five seconds. Mux notes results vary with viewer location and internet connectivity. Treat the values as conditional, not a service-level guarantee.
Amazon IVS low-latency streaming AWS says results are usually under five seconds and can be under three seconds. AWS notes geography, ISP, and streaming software affect observed latency.
Amazon IVS Real-Time Streaming AWS says end-to-end latency can be under 300 milliseconds. This is a possible result, not a guaranteed delay for every participant or network.

These figures come from different vendors’ own product pages and FAQs, not a controlled head-to-head test. Before committing, measure glass-to-glass delay in the countries, devices, and network conditions your users actually have. Include the time from capture through ingest, processing, delivery, and player buffering; a provider’s stated mode alone does not determine the delay users experience.

Compare the complete media path

Evaluate the route from the camera or encoder to the viewer, not just the API endpoint. A mismatch at any stage can block launch or force a later redesign.

Area Questions to answer before choosing
Latency and interaction What glass-to-glass delay is acceptable? Do viewers only watch, react, bid, or take the stage? Is the required latency mode actually included?
Ingest Does the broadcaster need RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, WebRTC/WHIP, a browser or mobile SDK, or professional contribution equipment? What happens when the network is unstable?
Playback Which formats and player SDKs support your target browsers, phones, and connected devices? Is adaptive-bitrate playback available?
Scale and geography What are the expected peak concurrent viewers, stream count, ingest locations, and viewer countries? What recovery behavior is needed when a component fails?
Product features Do you need recording or VOD, DVR, chat, timed metadata, moderation, private playback, authorization, analytics, or webhooks?
Developer fit Check API ergonomics, web/iOS/Android SDK coverage, framework support, documentation, sample apps, deployment model, and fit with your team’s cloud skills.
Operations and control How much encoding, packaging, CDN, player, resilience, security, and compliance configuration should your team own?
Cost Which billing units apply to input, viewing or participant time, resolution, bitrate, delivery, geography, recording, storage, chat, and peak load? Include engineering and operations effort.

Amazon IVS: managed low-latency and real-time video

AWS describes Amazon IVS as a managed service for developers adding low-latency or real-time video to apps and sites. Its FAQ describes low-latency pricing based on video input and output duration, Real-Time pricing based on participant connection duration, and Chat pricing based on messages sent and delivered. AWS also lists control-plane/API regions and says ingest and delivery use a separate global network. Confirm current regional and feature availability for the specific deployment rather than assuming the API region determines every part of the media path.

Mux: API-managed live streams with HLS playback

Mux’s workflow creates a live-stream resource and key, accepts RTMP broadcast input, and returns playback identifiers. Its product page describes token-based playback controls as well as standard HLS and LL-HLS modes. The different latency figures on its product page and FAQ are worth treating as mode- and condition-specific, as shown above.

Google Cloud Live Stream API: protocol and encoder choices matter

Google Cloud’s guidance compares RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH and recommends SRT “if possible.” The encoder or transcoder must support the chosen protocol. Google Cloud gives the following SRT bitrate examples for its Live Stream API workflow; they are not universal encoding prescriptions.

Example format H.264 bitrate in Google Cloud guidance
720p at 25–30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 50–60 fps 20 Mbps
2160p at 50–60 fps 50 Mbps

If you select SRT ingest, verify that your chosen encoder or transcoder supports it; Google Cloud says most professional-grade encoders do. A dedicated SRT-capable hardware encoder is only relevant if it fits the chosen workflow; it may be unnecessary with RTMP or a direct browser/mobile SDK.

Build a cost estimate from one realistic workload

Do not compare headline unit prices unless the billing units and assumptions match. Estimate a representative month using the same number of streams, input hours, viewer hours or participant connections, peak concurrency, resolution, bitrate, viewer regions, recording retention, and feature requirements for every candidate. Add the expected costs of storage, chat, delivery, and the engineering and operational work your team must supply.

LiveKit publishes an illustrative comparison that assumes 50 TB per month for its unit-cost examples and uses 720p at 1.2 Mbps with VP9 for modeled totals. It lists LiveKit Cloud at $0.12/GB, Cloudflare at $1 per 1,000 minutes, and Amazon IVS at $0.075/hour; the example totals are $642, $600, and $750, respectively. Those figures are volatile vendor-published examples under the stated assumptions, not a general price ranking or a forecast for your service. Recheck each provider’s current pricing and calculate your actual usage mix.

Run a workload-specific proof of concept

  1. Write down product requirements. Set the participant model, latency target, expected stream and viewer volumes, user countries, target devices, required features, and failure-recovery expectations.
  2. Trace the media path. Confirm that the selected ingest protocol works with your encoder or SDK and that the output format and player SDKs cover your target platforms.
  3. Test real conditions. Measure glass-to-glass delay, playback startup, quality changes, and recovery on representative devices and networks in target regions. Keep the workload and test method consistent across candidates.
  4. Exercise security and operations. Verify playback authorization, private-stream behavior, credentials and key handling, monitoring, alerts, and the team’s procedure for an ingest or playback failure.
  5. Recalculate the bill. Plug observed stream hours, viewer or participant time, quality, geography, recordings, storage, and features into each provider’s current pricing model.
  6. Choose the least complex fit. Prefer the service that meets the experience and operational requirements without paying for or taking on unnecessary real-time capabilities or infrastructure control.

Keep a 24/7 YouTube channel live without building an API integration

If the requirement is specifically to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than to embed live video inside your own app, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not a live streaming API for an application architecture. It runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud, so a home computer does not have to stay on.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.

StreamNeo keeps running with your computer off, accepts uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page, and start the free first day.

Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing by the smallest latency number alone: First establish whether viewers need a broadcast or duplex session, then test the actual media path in target conditions.
  • Assuming a protocol is interchangeable: Confirm protocol support at both ingest and playback, including the encoder and player versions your product will use.
  • Comparing unlike cost units: Normalize stream hours, audience or participant time, quality, region, and included features before comparing bills.
  • Buying flexibility the product does not need: A one-way stream may not need real-time participant connections, while a two-way session cannot be treated as ordinary broadcast playback.
  • Assuming one region setting covers the whole stream: Verify control-plane/API availability as well as ingest and delivery geography.
  • Skipping the failure path: Test what viewers and operators see when ingest, connectivity, authorization, or playback fails, and confirm the recovery process meets product needs.
