There is no universal best AI clip maker for YouTube videos. The right choice depends on whether the tool accepts your footage, finds worthwhile moments, reframes them cleanly for vertical video, supports the captions and editing control you need, and fits your export and publishing workflow. If you only need a clip from one of your own videos, check YouTube Studio first; for a dedicated workflow, OpusClip is one documented option to evaluate—not a proven market-wide winner.
How to choose an AI clip maker
AI clip makers analyze longer videos and help turn selected moments into shorter edits, often with vertical reframing and captions. A feature list alone cannot tell you whether the result will work for your channel. Test candidate tools with the same representative video and inspect the actual moments, crops, captions, and export before paying.
Check the source you can import
Start with the footage you actually have: a local video file, a YouTube link, or a recording of a livestream. Support for one input does not imply support for the others. Confirm the supported source and any import restrictions on the plan you would use.
Judge the selected moments and vertical crop
Review whether the tool selects complete, understandable moments rather than cutting off context. For vertical output, check that the speaker, action, or other important subject stays in frame throughout—not just at the start of the clip. A crop that loses the person speaking can make an otherwise promising selection unusable.

Options worth evaluating
YouTube Studio: start here for your own videos
YouTube Studio offers a first-party way for creators to select segments from their own long-form videos and publish them as clips or Shorts. YouTube says the tool can show an AI-generated outline to help navigate a video transcript. This is a sensible first check if your source is already on your channel; it is not evidence that Studio matches the features of every dedicated clip maker. See YouTube’s Clips and Shorts guidance.
OpusClip: a dedicated workflow to compare
OpusClip describes a workflow that selects highlights from longer videos, creates short videos with captions and reframing, and supports social publishing. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independently verified performance results. Try it against your own footage and compare the output with other tools before deciding. Its listed plans and limits are subject to change; consult OpusClip’s pricing page.

Other tools: use feature claims as a shortlist, not a verdict
A Clypse-authored comparison published and updated September 3, 2026, discusses Clypse alongside OpusClip, Vizard, Klap, Submagic, Choppity, and Eklipse. It points to differing use cases, including imports, fuller editing, scheduled sharing, caption languages, transcript editing, livestream imports, and auto-clipping. Because it is a vendor-authored roundup rather than a controlled independent test, treat its recommendations as leads to verify, not a definitive ranking. A practical way to compare candidates
- Choose one representative source video. Use a video similar in length, subject, audio quality, and speaking style to the material you expect to clip regularly.
- Test the same source in each candidate. Use the input type you plan to rely on, and note any import or processing limits.
- Review several suggested clips. Check whether each has enough setup and context to make sense on its own, and whether the cut starts and ends cleanly.
- Check the vertical framing and captions. Look for subjects cropped out, distracting reframing, transcription mistakes, and caption controls you cannot adjust.
- Export or publish a sample. Confirm the actual output quality, watermark status, and destination. Do not assume a preview represents what a free plan lets you export.
- Compare the recurring workflow and cost. Match the plan’s credits, minutes, export settings, and publishing tools to your anticipated use, then recheck current terms before payment.
Rights, originality, and monetization still matter
Clipping software does not clear rights
You need the rights or permission to use your footage, music, and other material. YouTube warns that copyright-protected material used in Shorts created outside its own creation tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid takedown request. Review YouTube’s remix guidance before using material you did not create or license.
Copyright and reused-content monetization are separate checks
YouTube’s channel monetization policy treats reused content separately from copyright enforcement. It describes substantive commentary, narrative, or editing as possible ways reused material can be meaningfully different, while also explaining that copyright still applies independently. A tool-generated crop, captions, or cut does not by itself establish permission or make a channel eligible for monetization. See YouTube’s channel monetization policy.

Shorts revenue is not guaranteed by a clip maker
YouTube says eligible Shorts revenue sharing requires a monetizing partner to accept the Shorts Monetization Module and meet applicable eligibility rules. Under the policy’s allocation model, a creator keeps 45% of their allocated Creator Pool amount; that is not 45% of all Shorts ad revenue and does not guarantee a particular payout. YouTube identifies unedited movie or TV clips, reuploads, and compilations without original additions as examples of non-original content whose views are ineligible. Consult YouTube’s Shorts monetization policy.
Review AI-assisted output before publishing
YouTube says creators remain responsible for reviewing AI-generated content and following Community Guidelines, and notes that AI feature availability may vary by country and language. Check YouTube’s AI features guidance and review every finished Short yourself.
Or let it run in the cloud
