The exact menu labels below follow Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows guide; check the help for your installed release if its interface differs.
Before you configure the stream
Build and check your Wirecast show first: add the sources you plan to use, arrange the shots, and confirm that your audio and video work in the preview. You will also need access to the YouTube account and event you intend to stream to. This guide covers sending a Wirecast program to YouTube; it does not establish current account eligibility rules, so check YouTube’s current requirements for your account.

Wirecast Control Surface by X-keys | Buy on Amazon |
Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows user guide documents the destination and event workflow below. Telestream’s current Wirecast help resources should take precedence if your release uses different controls. Do not confuse current Wirecast with the separate, legacy “Wirecast for YouTube” application described in older material.
Configure Wirecast for a YouTube event
-
Sign in to YouTube. In a browser, sign in to the account that owns or can access the intended live event.

Wirecast Control Surface by X-keys- Full control of layers, sources and transitions
- Layout designed by Telestream
- For Wirecast Studio or Pro (9 or newer)
- Compatible with both Windows and Mac versions
- NOT YET COMPATIBLE WITH BIG SUR OS**
-
Open Wirecast Output Settings and choose YouTube. In the Wirecast 16 Windows guide, YouTube is selected as the output destination in Output Settings.
-
Choose an encoder preset. A preset is a starting point for compressing audio and video for broadcast. Select one appropriate to the quality you want and the capacity of your computer and network; the guide does not identify a single best preset for every production.
-
Map input channels if needed. Channel mapping is optional in the Wirecast 16 guide. Use it if your production requires particular inputs to be assigned to the output.
-
Add or select the event. To add an event in the documented workflow, use the plus control, enter its details, and save. Authenticate when prompted, then choose the event from the event menu once it appears. If you already have an event, authenticate and select it.

Set a stream delay only if you need one. Wirecast 16’s guide describes a delay buffer between the Wirecast stream and the broadcast, with a range of 0–999 seconds. A longer delay uses more memory; it is optional, not a routine recommendation for an ordinary live event.
-
Start the output and verify the event. Use the output controls available in your installed Wirecast release, then check the event in YouTube. The precise current YouTube Live Control Room sequence is not established here, so follow the controls shown in your account rather than relying on old screenshots.
Check performance and quality while live
Telestream’s current Wirecast help page recommends keeping system CPU usage below 70% while streaming. If CPU load is high, Telestream suggests reducing the Wirecast canvas and output resolution to 1280×720. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer, scene, or network will perform adequately.
Make any resolution or preset changes with the production you are actually running in mind, and verify the result in YouTube. The available sources do not establish one universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting for all Wirecast-to-YouTube streams.
Troubleshoot a failed connection or unstable output
-
Wirecast cannot authenticate or connect: Confirm that you are signed in to the intended YouTube account and that the event is available to select. In the Wirecast 16 Windows guide, Telestream suggests trying “Use Backup Server” for authentication or connectivity errors. Check your installed release for the equivalent setting because this instruction is version- and platform-specific.
-
Wirecast hangs or crashes while connecting: The same Wirecast 16 guide says to try “Use Backup Server” when Wirecast attempts to connect and crashes. If the option is absent or the problem persists, consult the current Wirecast help for your release.
-
CPU use is high: Check the system load during the live production. Telestream’s support recommendation is to keep it below 70%; reducing the canvas and output resolution to 1280×720 may lower CPU load, though it may also reduce picture detail.
-
You are unsure whether to use the YouTube destination or RTMP: Telestream lists tutorials for both “YouTube Live Streaming” and “YouTube RTMP Streaming,” as well as a bandwidth-test tutorial. The tutorial index establishes that these topics are documented, but does not provide enough detail to recommend one route or specify current RTMP field names. Consult the relevant tutorial and the controls in your installed version before entering connection details manually.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate a live Wirecast production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera.
