You can send an ATEM Mini Pro program to YouTube Live in either of two ways: stream directly from the ATEM over Ethernet, or connect it to a computer by USB and use streaming software. The direct route uses the ATEM’s built-in streaming engine; the USB route lets computer software manage the encoder connection. Neither is documented as inherently more reliable, so choose based on the equipment and workflow you already use.

Choose how you want to send the program

Choice Who sends the stream Main setup point Best fit
Direct Ethernet ATEM Mini Pro’s built-in streaming engine ATEM Software Control output/live-stream settings You want a direct hardware path from the ATEM to YouTube.
USB webcam output Streaming software running on a computer Select the ATEM as the camera source, then configure YouTube in the software You want computer software to manage the encoder workflow.

Blackmagic documents both direct Ethernet streaming on the Pro and USB webcam output. The USB webcam method also works with streaming applications such as Open Broadcaster and XSplit, according to Blackmagic’s ATEM Mini Getting Started page. The exact controls in third-party software vary by application.

Before you connect: prepare YouTube and the event

Enable live streaming early

If this is your first time going live on the channel, enable live streaming in YouTube in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the event day. Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then copy the stream key and, if requested by your encoder, the stream URL. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the server URL and stream key into the encoder.

Protect the stream key

Treat the stream key like a password: it connects an encoder feed to the selected YouTube stream. Do not show it in screenshots, tutorials, overlays, or chat. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the old key in the ATEM or streaming software before sending another signal. A key that was reset after you copied it will no longer be the matching credential.

Check the venue connection

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the stream bitrate. That spare capacity matters on shared connections, where other users or devices can consume upload bandwidth. Test the actual venue connection near the event time, not just a different network or a quiet moment. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Method 1: stream directly from the ATEM Mini Pro over Ethernet

  1. Create or select the encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream for this broadcast. Copy its stream key; copy the stream URL too if the setup asks for it.
  2. Connect the ATEM to the network. Plug the ATEM Mini Pro’s Ethernet port into a router or another supported internet connection.
  3. Configure the YouTube destination. Open ATEM Software Control and go to its output/live-stream settings. Select YouTube, choose a server, and enter the stream key. Blackmagic’s ATEM Mini manual (June 2024 edition) describes selecting the platform and server before starting the stream.
  4. Send a test signal. Start with bars or a standby graphic and check that the signal appears in YouTube’s preview. Before the real event, test representative movement and audio as well; YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream.
  5. Publish from Live Control Room when appropriate. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room. Sending a signal from the ATEM does not necessarily publish a scheduled stream on its own. For an immediate encoder stream, follow the status and publishing controls shown for that stream.
  6. Monitor and end the broadcast. Watch the picture, sound, and stream-health messages during the event. When finished, stop the ATEM stream and end the YouTube stream as appropriate.

Method 2: use the ATEM as a USB webcam with computer software

  1. Connect the ATEM to the computer by USB. Blackmagic says the ATEM is recognized as a webcam. In your streaming application, select the ATEM as the camera or video source.
  2. Configure YouTube in the streaming application. Choose YouTube as the service, or enter the Live Control Room stream URL and key if the application asks for them. Make sure the selected stream and key correspond to each other.
  3. Set compatible video output. Match the software’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the output it receives from the ATEM and to your available upload connection. YouTube detects encoder resolution and frame rate automatically by default, but its recommended settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  4. Test the full path. Send a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check representative movement and audio in YouTube’s preview, and watch stream-health messages before and during the event.
  5. Publish the scheduled stream. If you scheduled it, wait for the Live Control Room preview and click Go live when ready.

Choose YouTube encoder settings that fit the signal

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS encryption where supported.

For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 as recommended bitrates. These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed ATEM output presets. Confirm what resolution and frame rate your chosen ATEM workflow actually sends, then choose compatible settings in the computer encoder if you use one. The direct ATEM route uses the ATEM’s own streaming controls, so do not assume a computer-software bitrate setting applies to that route.

Latency is a trade-off

YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. Choose a lower-latency mode if rapid interaction matters; favor a more tolerant mode if smooth playback matters more than near-immediate chat response. Test your choice under realistic network conditions using YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Test the complete production, not just the connection

  • Check the switched picture, any graphics, and every audio source you expect to use.
  • Test with the kind of movement and sound expected during the event, rather than relying only on a static slate.
  • Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before you publish and while the broadcast is running.
  • Confirm the venue upload connection has the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, including when the network is busy.
  • Make sure the selected YouTube stream, stream URL, and current key match before the event begins.

For content you do not own, verify that you have the rights needed for the planned broadcast. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help with that review. Do not assume that sending a signal through the ATEM or receiving a YouTube preview settles copyright or channel-policy questions.

Troubleshoot common YouTube Live problems

YouTube shows no incoming preview

  • Confirm you selected the intended encoder stream in YouTube Studio.
  • Check that the stream URL and key belong to that stream and that the key has not been reset since it was copied.
  • For direct streaming, confirm the ATEM is connected to the network and that the platform, server, and key are set in ATEM Software Control.
  • For USB streaming, confirm the application has selected the ATEM as its video source and is actually sending the encoder feed.

The preview appears, but viewers cannot see a public stream

If the broadcast is scheduled, a preview is not the same as publishing. Once the preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live.

Playback is unstable or frames are dropped

Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the available upload bandwidth. Reduce competition for the shared connection if possible, and retain the recommended 20% upload headroom over the stream bitrate.

Audio or motion does not look or sound right

Test the audio and representative movement before the event, then monitor both in the YouTube preview and during the broadcast. A connection test with a static image alone will not reveal every production problem.

Latency is too high, or viewers report buffering

Revisit the latency choice: lower latency can make buffering more likely, while a more tolerant mode can trade rapid interaction for smoother playback.

After the broadcast

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the event runs longer, do not assume the same automatic archive behavior; check YouTube’s stream controls and recording arrangements. See the encoder stream instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud
