To live stream audio on YouTube, create a stream in YouTube Studio and send it through an encoder with your microphone, mixer, or other audio source connected. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow sends audio together with a video feed; the reviewed guidance does not establish a general audio-only mode. Set up and test the visual component as well as the sound before you go live.
Can you stream audio only on YouTube?
YouTube’s documented encoder setup is for a stream with audio and video, not a confirmed audio-only broadcast. If your main content is spoken audio, music, a lecture, or a discussion, plan a video component too. A static image may be an option, but the guidance here does not specify a required visual treatment; test your encoder and YouTube preview before relying on one.
If you want to broadcast live from a microphone or mixer, use the encoder workflow below. YouTube also offers a webcam route for a simpler computer-and-webcam setup; its encoder route is the better fit when you need external audio hardware or more production control.
Check channel access and prepare your equipment
Confirm that live streaming is enabled
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before an event rather than on the day.

Choose an audio signal path
Connect your microphone or other audio source to the computer, audio interface, mixer, or encoder as appropriate for your equipment. Select that input in the encoder and check that its meter responds. An interface or mixer can help with an XLR microphone, multiple guests, or several sources, but it adds setup complexity and is not necessary for a basic single-microphone stream.
Test what you already own before buying equipment. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A USB microphone is an optional upgrade for spoken-word formats if your current microphone’s sound or connections are inadequate; no particular model is required by the documented setup.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live. Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. If this is your first time streaming, allow for the initial activation period.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder’s streaming destination settings. Treat the key as sensitive: it directs the encoder to your stream and allows YouTube to accept its feed. Do not share it publicly.
- Connect and select your audio source. Confirm the intended microphone or mixer input is active and that the encoder’s audio meter responds. Add and verify your video component as well.
- Choose compatible audio settings. For stereo, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps audio. It recommends CBR and RTMPS where the encoder provides those options. The 128 kbps figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a stated minimum.
- Check upload capacity. Keep the total stream bitrate within the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom; a connection that is only just fast enough can make a stream unstable.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Watch the YouTube preview and, if possible, listen on a second device. Check for silence, clipping, background noise, and audio/video sync problems. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- Start the encoder, then start the stream in Live Control Room. Wait for the preview to appear before going live. Continue monitoring audio and stream health during the broadcast.
- End the broadcast cleanly. End the stream in Studio and stop the encoder. If you need a replay, confirm that it appears in Studio.
Test sound and prevent common problems
- No audio in the preview: Check that the correct input is selected in the encoder, the microphone or mixer is connected and powered as needed, and the input meter moves. Confirm the encoder is sending an audio track.
- Clipping or distorted sound: Reduce the input level at the source or mixer and test again. Make adjustments while monitoring the actual YouTube preview, not just the encoder meter.
- Background noise: Listen to the test on a separate device and identify whether the noise is present at the microphone, in the connected equipment, or in the room. Address the source and retest before the event.
- Audio and video are out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio and video sources and settings, then make another test broadcast. The reviewed YouTube guidance recommends checking sync but does not prescribe a universal correction value.
- Unstable stream or dropped connection: Check connection stability and total bitrate. Keep the bitrate within available upload bandwidth and aim for YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- No preview after starting the encoder: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder and make sure the encoder is actively sending. Wait for the preview before starting the live broadcast in Studio.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights to the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights holders. Owning a recording, paying for a music-streaming subscription, or having permission to use a track in an ordinary video does not by itself establish that you have permission to use it in a livestream and its archive. Verify that your license covers the specific live use and replay.
Will YouTube save the livestream?
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a stream longer than that, check the current behavior in Studio rather than assuming a replay will be available; keep a separate recording if the archive matters to you.
