Aspect ratio describes a video’s shape; resolution describes how many pixels make up that frame. For example, 16:9 is a widescreen shape, while 1920 × 1080 is a resolution. Both 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are 16:9, but 1920 × 1080 contains more pixels. YouTube supports more than one shape and resolution, so choose a frame that fits your content rather than treating 1080p or 16:9 as a universal requirement.
Aspect ratio and resolution: the difference
Aspect ratio is the frame’s shape
An aspect ratio compares a video’s width with its height. The ratio 16:9 describes a wide landscape frame; square and vertical video use different ratios.
Resolution is the pixel count
Resolution is usually written as width × height in pixels. A 1920 × 1080 frame is commonly called 1080p, while 1280 × 720 is 720p. Both have a 16:9 ratio: divide each width and height by the same factor to reduce them to 16:9.
The terms answer different questions: aspect ratio tells you the frame’s proportions, and resolution tells you its pixel dimensions. Neither term, by itself, specifies frame rate or bitrate.

Which aspect ratios and resolutions does YouTube support?
YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for playback on a computer and lists several recommended 16:9 dimensions, including 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, and 3840 × 2160. These are recommended dimensions, not a rule that every video must be 16:9 or 1080p. YouTube also supports vertical and square videos, and its player adapts to the video and the viewer’s device. On desktop, the player may add padding around some formats.

How to choose a shape and resolution for your video
- Choose the intended format first. Decide whether the content is landscape, square, or vertical based on how you want viewers to watch it. Don’t force a vertical or square video onto a landscape canvas just to match the computer player’s standard.
- Keep the frame’s proportions consistent. Once you choose the shape, select width and height that preserve that ratio. For 16:9 landscape, examples include 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080.
- Match the export to the footage. Consider the detail in your source video and where viewers will watch it. A higher pixel count is not automatically a better-looking result if the source does not contain matching detail.
- Export without baked-in padding. YouTube advises against adding black bars or other padding directly to the video to make it fit a player. Upload the video in its intended aspect ratio so the player can adapt to it.
Frame rate and bitrate are separate export settings
Resolution and aspect ratio do not determine every part of video quality. Frame rate describes how many frames appear per second; bitrate describes how much data is used to encode video. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which the footage was recorded, and deinterlacing interlaced footage before uploading.
For SDR uploads, YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame-rate class. For example, its recommendation for 1080p SDR is 8 Mbps at standard frame rates of 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 12 Mbps at high frame rates of 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are upload encoding recommendations, not a promise that resolution alone determines perceived quality. Consult YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the applicable resolution and frame-rate guidance.
