To add an overlay, alert, or widget to a YouTube Live stream, configure it with a provider such as StreamElements or Streamlabs, copy its hosted overlay URL, then add that URL to an OBS Studio Browser source in the scene you want to use. Set the source dimensions, position and layer it, and test it before broadcasting. OBS Studio does not generate stream alerts itself; the Browser source displays alerts and widgets supplied by another service.
Choose how to add your overlay or alerts
For most OBS setups, a hosted overlay URL loaded as a Browser source is the straightforward option. You can use a single overlay for several elements or choose a provider’s alert widget. A provider’s OBS plugin is an alternative, not a requirement for the Browser source workflow.

Before choosing, check that the provider supports the events and widgets you need, how it integrates with your software, how much control it gives you over appearance and event variations, and how you can test and reuse the setup across scenes. Provider features and dashboard labels can change, so confirm what is currently available in your account.

1. Select the scene
In OBS, select the scene where the overlay or alert should appear. Sources belong to scenes, so adding one to a scene does not automatically add it to every other scene.

2. Configure the overlay with its provider
In the provider’s dashboard or overlay editor, choose the visual elements and alert events you want. For a basic setup, StreamElements describes an editor-based workflow that does not require coding. Save your configuration before copying the overlay URL.
3. Copy and protect the URL
Copy the overlay URL privately. StreamElements warns that overlay URLs contain sensitive tokens, so do not post one publicly or share it where others could use it.

4. Add a Browser source
- In OBS, select the intended scene and find the Sources dock.
- Select the + button and choose Browser.
- Name the source if useful, then paste the provider’s overlay URL into its properties.
- Set the source width and height to suit the overlay and your stream canvas, then confirm the source properties.
5. Set dimensions, position, and layer order
Match the Browser source dimensions to the layout you created and the canvas you use. StreamElements documents 1920×1080 as its default browser-source size unless the source resolution has been changed. It suggests 30 or 60 FPS depending on stream settings and computer capability; these are provider guidance defaults, not requirements for every overlay.

In the Sources list, items higher up appear above items lower down. Put the overlay above the camera, game, or background content it should cover; move it lower if it is obscuring an element that needs to appear in front.

6. Test before going live
Use the provider’s test function in its dashboard or streaming software. Confirm that the intended event triggers the right animation and sound, and that the alert’s size and placement work in the OBS preview. If you have configured multiple event types, test each one you plan to use.
Use a plugin or provider-specific alert box instead
Streamlabs documents adding its Alert Box through Streamlabs Desktop or its OBS plugin. It also supports a Browser source approach for other streaming software. If you choose a plugin, follow the current setup steps shown by Streamlabs for your installed software; if you choose the Browser source, use the URL workflow above. For a StreamElements overlay, configure the elements in its overlay editor and load the overlay URL into OBS as a Browser source. Its documentation describes overlays that can include alerts, chat, labels, and goals. The exact editor controls can change, so use the current dashboard labels and save your changes before testing.

Troubleshoot common overlay problems
- Nothing appears: Check that the Browser source is enabled in the selected scene and that its properties contain the correct provider URL. Trigger the provider’s test alert to distinguish a source or URL problem from an event-configuration problem.
- The overlay is clipped or misplaced: Adjust the Browser source width and height to suit the canvas, then reposition it in the preview. StreamElements’ documented default is 1920×1080 unless changed, not a universal required size.
- The overlay hides the camera or game: Change its order in the Sources list. Higher sources render above lower sources in the preview.
- The wrong alert style or event appears: Check the active theme and the settings for that event, save the changes, and test again.
- Alerts or alert audio play twice between scenes: Check whether duplicate alert boxes are present. StreamElements documents using one alert box across scenes and removing or hiding duplicates to avoid duplicate audio.
- You are unsure whether the URL is safe to share: Treat the provider overlay URL as a private, account-linked token. Do not publish it.
