To simulcast to YouTube and Twitch, prepare a YouTube Live event, then use an encoder that can send one program to both platforms or a relay that distributes one outgoing feed to both. Check that YouTube Live is enabled, configure both destinations, confirm your upload connection can handle the chosen settings, and test both outputs before the event. Twitch generally permits simulcasting, subject to its rules on stream quality and directing viewers to other platforms.
Before you start
Make sure YouTube Live is available
Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose a method that can reach both platforms
You need an encoder configured for multiple outputs or a third-party relay that accepts one feed and distributes it to both destinations. The exact controls depend on the encoder or relay; do not assume every product supports multi-output. YouTube’s cross-platform streaming guide explains the general setup and destination information.
With direct multi-output, your connection may send a separate outbound feed to each platform. With a relay, your encoder sends a feed to the relay, which then forwards it. Check how your chosen setup routes video before estimating the required upload capacity.

Have your stream credentials ready
YouTube and Twitch each need to receive the stream. Depending on your setup, you may need a destination URL and stream key for each platform. YouTube notes that some encoders manage these details for you. Treat a stream key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the old key in your encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
How to simulcast step by step
- Enable YouTube Live in advance. Confirm channel verification and eligibility, and allow time for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings. Copy the stream URL and key if your encoder requires them.
- Get the Twitch destination details. Use Twitch’s current creator workflow to prepare the channel for a live broadcast and obtain the destination information your encoder or relay needs. Labels and exact steps can vary as Twitch updates its interface.
- Configure the encoder or relay for both destinations. Add YouTube and Twitch as outputs, or configure the relay to distribute the incoming feed to both. Confirm each destination is enabled and that the same program is being sent to both.
- Choose settings that fit both outputs and your connection. Use an output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by your encoder and both destinations. YouTube says upload speed is critical for high-quality simulstreaming, but there is no single upload-speed figure that fits every setup: the required capacity depends on your encoder settings and whether you send one or multiple outbound feeds. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.
- Test before the event. Run a test with representative speech, audio levels, and movement. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and confirm that Twitch is receiving video and sound. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its encoder settings guidance also explains that YouTube transcodes streams into multiple output formats, without guaranteeing a particular result for every viewer or for Twitch.
- Go live and monitor both outputs. Watch for dropped frames, audio issues, interruptions, or a failed destination. Verify both platforms remain live rather than assuming that a successful connection to one means the other is working.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Use the stop controls required by your encoder and platform workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the event afterward if you need to confirm the archive.
Follow Twitch’s simulcasting rules
Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ permits simulcasting unless you have an agreement with Twitch that requires exclusivity. Permission to broadcast on both platforms does not remove the rules about how the Twitch experience is presented.

- Keep the viewing experience on Twitch at least comparable to the experience on your other destinations. Do not intentionally reduce Twitch’s stream quality relative to the others.
- Do not use your Twitch broadcast to direct viewers to a concurrent stream elsewhere. Twitch states: “Twitch may not be used to drive users to a live stream on another platform or service.”
- You may identify other platforms in your profile, but do not actively promote another live-streaming service during the Twitch broadcast or encourage Twitch viewers to leave for the concurrent stream.
- Tools that combine activity from other platforms, such as chat, may be used for your personal use; Twitch says the use of such a tool is not itself prohibited.
Twitch says it may issue a warning before enforcement. If you have an exclusivity agreement, review its terms rather than relying on the general simulcasting permission.
Choose between direct multi-output and a relay
| Approach | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder with multiple outputs | The encoder sends the program to YouTube and Twitch directly. | Confirm the encoder supports both current destination workflows, and determine whether your connection must carry multiple outbound feeds. |
| Third-party relay | The encoder sends one feed to the relay, which distributes it to both platforms. | Confirm compatibility with your encoder and both platforms, how the relay handles the outputs, and any account or reliability requirements. |
The platform guidance establishes the need for destination settings and adequate upload capacity, but does not establish or rank particular encoder or relay products. If you need a combined chat view, check whether your chosen tools support it; Twitch allows cross-platform activity tools for personal use.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not let you start streaming: Check verification, restrictions within the past 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still processing. Enable Live well ahead of the event.
- One platform is live and the other is not: Check that both destinations are enabled, that each URL and key is correct if entered manually, and that the encoder or relay reports a connection to each. Re-enter credentials if needed.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder. Do not continue using a key that others may have obtained.
- Video stutters or drops frames: Check stream health and available upload capacity. Reduce the output load or use a routing method that better fits your connection, then run another test. A wired Ethernet connection may help stabilize the local link, but it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service.
- Audio or motion looks wrong: Test again with the same kind of speech, audio levels, and movement expected during the broadcast. Check both platform previews, not just the encoder’s local preview.
- Twitch’s experience is worse than YouTube’s: Revisit the output configuration so Twitch is not intentionally given lower quality. Verify the actual Twitch output during a test and while live.
