H.264 is the safer default when you are unsure what your streaming platform, ingest protocol, or viewers support. Choose H.265 (HEVC) when the destination explicitly accepts it and your encoder can produce it reliably—especially when bandwidth efficiency or a supported HDR workflow matters. Neither codec is best for every live stream: the entire path, from encoder to platform to playback, determines what will work.

H.264 vs. H.265: what changes for a live stream?

H.264, also called AVC, and H.265, also called HEVC, are video compression formats. They describe how the video is encoded, but they do not by themselves determine whether a live stream will connect or play. Your encoder, the platform’s ingest protocol, the platform’s accepted settings, and the viewer’s playback path all have to support the choice.

HEVC can compress video more efficiently than H.264. In practical terms, it may deliver higher quality at a given bitrate or comparable quality at a lower bitrate. That is a directional advantage, not a guaranteed percentage saving: results depend on the video, encoder, settings, and platform workflow. Do not assume HEVC will cut bitrate in half or that two streams at the same nominal bitrate will look identical.

Which codec should you choose?

Choose When it fits What to verify
H.264 The destination or ingest protocol is uncertain, compatibility is the priority, or the workflow specifically requires H.264. Confirm the platform’s current bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, keyframe, and protocol requirements.
H.265/HEVC The selected destination protocol accepts HEVC, your encoder can handle it in real time, and better compression efficiency or HDR support is useful. Check the platform’s codec and HDR requirements, protocol support, and your encoder’s performance at the intended resolution and frame rate.

If you send to several destinations, the most restrictive one may determine your settings. Separate encodes can sometimes address different requirements, but they add encoding workload and are not a universal solution.

Does YouTube Live support H.265?

Yes. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with support described up to 60 fps. Its ingestion protocol comparison shows that codec availability depends on the protocol selected, so check the protocol-specific requirements rather than treating codec support as unconditional. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. For HDR, YouTube names H.265/HEVC in its live settings guidance. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance before choosing settings for your resolution and frame rate; its values and recommendations can change.

Google describes HEVC’s compression advantage qualitatively: it may improve quality at a given bitrate or allow a lower bitrate for comparable quality. The protocol guidance does not establish a fixed bitrate reduction for every stream. Review YouTube’s ingest protocol comparison for the protocol-specific distinction.

Can you stream H.265 to Twitch?

Do not infer Twitch’s current codec ingest support from YouTube’s guidance or from general HEVC support elsewhere. Twitch’s broadcaster guidance covers ingest bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoder considerations; confirm the accepted codec in Twitch’s current documentation and in the workflow available to your account before configuring an HEVC stream. Check Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines for its current requirements.

What about HLS and Apple devices?

Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices permits H.264/AVC and HEVC/H.265, as well as Dolby Vision and AV1. In that specification, H.264 may use fragmented MP4 (fMP4) or MPEG transport stream (MPEG-TS), while HEVC uses fMP4. The specification also imposes profile, level, and live-stream bandwidth-conformance requirements. These are requirements for Apple-device HLS authoring—not a guarantee that every generic HLS player accepts the same combinations. Consult Apple’s HLS authoring specification for the relevant profiles and constraints.

Check that your encoder can handle HEVC in real time

A codec option appearing in an encoder’s menu does not mean the computer can encode it smoothly at your chosen resolution and frame rate. OBS documents HEVC support through specified hardware encoders: NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VT. Availability depends on the platform, hardware, and current OBS support. Check OBS’s audio and video formats guide and your hardware’s capabilities.

  1. Confirm the destination and protocol. Check the platform’s current accepted codec, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and—if relevant—HDR requirements.
  2. Confirm encoder support. Verify that your software and hardware offer the codec at your target settings. For HEVC in OBS, check for a supported hardware encoder rather than assuming software encoding will be available or fast enough.
  3. Test a representative scene. Use the actual encoder and settings you intend to stream with. Test fast motion, detailed scenes, and other demanding content; watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, or visible quality problems.
  4. Verify playback and ingest. Confirm that the platform accepts the stream and that playback works on the devices and apps that matter to your audience.

Does H.265 save bitrate compared with H.264?

It can, but there is no universal savings figure supported by the platform guidance. HEVC’s efficiency may mean better image quality at the same bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. The outcome varies with content complexity, encoder implementation, settings, and the receiving platform. Treat any claimed percentage as specific to the test conditions behind it, not as a guaranteed live-stream result.

Common problems and what to check

  • The platform rejects the stream: Confirm the selected ingest protocol accepts the codec. Recheck the platform’s current codec and stream settings; support for HEVC on one protocol or platform does not establish support on another.
  • The encoder overloads or frames drop: Check whether the encoder is hardware-supported and capable of your chosen resolution and frame rate. Test the real workload and adjust settings if necessary.
  • HEVC does not improve the picture as expected: Compression efficiency is not a fixed bitrate multiplier. Compare representative content using the target encoder and platform settings instead of assuming a preset savings ratio.
  • HDR does not appear correctly: Verify that the destination accepts your HDR format and codec combination, and follow its current HDR ingest requirements. Apple’s HLS constraints apply to its Apple-device authoring specification, not every player.
  • A stream works on one destination but not another: Check each destination’s codec and protocol requirements separately. The least permissive destination can constrain a shared output.

Copyright and YouTube live rules still apply

Choosing H.264 or H.265 does not change your rights to the video or YouTube’s live-stream requirements. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies and settings before going live. Codec compatibility is only one part of a successful broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than stream a camera feed, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploads, not a live camera feed. StreamNeo sends to YouTube only.
