Open your video meeting app’s background or video-effects settings, choose Blur, and check the preview before you join or continue the call. Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams have built-in blur controls, so you usually do not need separate AI software. The exact menu and whether it is available depend on your device, account, app configuration, and any administrator restrictions. Blur can soften what is behind you, but it is not a privacy guarantee.

How background blur works

A meeting app uses the camera image to distinguish you from the scene behind you, then softens that scene. Microsoft describes Teams’ background effects as using AI and your device’s camera to isolate your silhouette and apply the effect. That is Microsoft’s description of its Teams feature, not a guarantee that every app uses the same processing method. Microsoft’s Teams background-effects overview also distinguishes effects such as background decoration from simple blur.

For ordinary background blur, start with the meeting app’s own controls. You do not need to generate a new background image: choose a blur option rather than a replacement or AI-generated background.

Blur your background in Google Meet

Before joining on a computer

  1. Open the meeting and look at your self-view on the pre-join screen.
  2. Select the Blur control at the bottom right of the self-view.
  3. Check how the camera preview looks, then join when ready.

During a meeting

  1. Open Video settings.
  2. Choose Blur background and check the preview.

Meet also offers slight blur, custom backgrounds, AI-generated backgrounds, and other effects. Which options appear can depend on the client, account type, and administrator settings. Google says device and cloud effect processing may be selected automatically. Effects can increase battery use or slow a device; if performance suffers or the battery is low, turn them off. See Google’s instructions for changing backgrounds and effects in Meet.

Zoom’s desktop blur depends on the system requirements for using its virtual-background system without a green screen; mobile devices also have virtual-background requirements. If the control is missing, check the device and app requirements and whether virtual backgrounds are permitted for your account. Administrators can enable or disable virtual backgrounds and AI-generated virtual backgrounds. When image generation is available and allowed, Zoom users can create a background from prompts; that is different from selecting blur. See Zoom’s instructions for enabling or disabling blurred backgrounds and its virtual-background settings guidance for administrators.

Blur your background in Microsoft Teams

Before joining

  1. On the pre-join screen, open Effects and avatars.

Background effects may be unavailable on some devices. Microsoft’s current instructions say Linux users and users on optimized VDI cannot use them; Android support also depends on app, operating-system, and GPU requirements. If you do not see blur, check the device and configuration notes in Microsoft’s Teams background instructions.

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

What to check if blur is unavailable or looks wrong

  • The blur option is missing: Confirm that you are using a supported app and device, and check whether your account or organization administrator permits background effects. Teams lists Linux and optimized VDI as unsupported for these effects; Zoom also has device requirements, and Meet’s options vary by client and account configuration.
  • The background effect makes the device slow or drains its battery: In Meet, turn off effects if performance suffers or battery is low. Effects can require extra device resources.
  • Blur hides some details but not others: Inspect the preview before relying on it. Microsoft warns that sensitive information may remain visible after blurring or replacing a background. Move sensitive objects, documents, or screens out of the camera’s view when privacy matters.
  • You expected a generated scene rather than blur: Choose a custom or generated background if your app and account offer it. Those options replace or decorate the scene; blur only softens it.

Does background blur protect your privacy?

No. Blur reduces visible detail, but it may leave shapes, text, reflections, or other sensitive information recognizable. Microsoft explicitly cautions that sensitive information can remain visible after background blur or replacement. For a confidential call, first remove sensitive material from the camera’s view or change where you sit, then use the preview to check the result. A software effect should be treated as a visual aid, not a privacy barrier.
