Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To stream vertical video on YouTube, go live from the YouTube mobile app in portrait orientation, or set up a vertical-and-horizontal broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For the second option, configure the vertical format before starting: YouTube’s default vertical view is a center crop, and the format cannot be added after a stream has begun.
Choose the right way to go live
| Method | Setup | Vertical composition | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile app | Start a live stream in the app. | Film and hold the phone in portrait orientation; lock screen rotation. | Quick updates and on-the-go streams. |
| Live Control Room | Set up the stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube creates horizontal and vertical versions together by default. | Choose center crop, fit to phone width, or a stacked layout. | Creators who want mobile vertical viewing as well as landscape viewing on other screens. |
| Third-party encoder | Configure an encoder for RTMP(S) and use a second stream key for the vertical version. | Send the matching portrait and landscape feeds to their respective keys. | Encoder-based productions or custom feeds. |
With Live Control Room’s dual-stream setup, viewers receive one go-live notification and use a shared stream URL and live chat. Viewers browsing the Shorts feed on the YouTube mobile app see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. [YouTube Help: dual streaming]
Check eligibility before you plan
- For live streaming generally: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Creators must be at least 16. [YouTube Help: get started with live streaming]
- For streaming from the mobile app: YouTube’s mobile guidance also lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. [YouTube Help: mobile live streaming]
Eligibility requirements and YouTube’s feature surfaces can change. Check the current Help pages and the options shown in your account before scheduling an event.
Stream vertical video from the YouTube mobile app
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create → Live.
- Before going live, decide whether you will keep the phone in portrait orientation. Lock screen rotation so an accidental turn does not change the framing.
- Check the shot, lighting, internet connection, and sound. YouTube recommends testing with an unlisted stream so you can check the picture and audio before your audience arrives. [YouTube Help: live-streaming tips]
- Charge the phone, turn on Do Not Disturb, and consider an external battery pack if you need extra power. YouTube estimates that streaming may use 1% of a phone’s battery per minute; treat that as a rough planning estimate, not a guarantee for every device or stream. [YouTube Help: mobile streaming guidance]
Phone camera capabilities affect the result, so check how your scene looks on the actual device. Arrange lighting for the subject and test audio in the unlisted broadcast rather than relying on the camera preview alone.

Set up vertical and horizontal versions in Live Control Room
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live. Create or select the scheduled stream.
- In Manage, select the stream and open Edit layout in the vertical preview.
- Choose Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. Adjust zoom and position to keep important subjects and text inside the vertical frame.
- Review both the vertical and horizontal previews before starting. YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started.
- If you edit the layout in the canvas, YouTube says you can continue adjusting it while live. Check the vertical preview after any change.
By default, Live Control Room creates a 16:9 horizontal version and a 9:16 vertical version together. The vertical version starts as a center crop unless you select another layout. [YouTube Help: dual streaming]
Send a vertical feed from a third-party encoder
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab. Change the vertical preview setting from Auto to Encoder.
- Choose RTMP(S) and select the second stream key for the vertical version. Configure the encoder to send the portrait feed to that key and the landscape feed to the horizontal key.
- Check that the two feeds correspond and that each has the intended orientation. Confirm the result in Live Control Room’s previews before the event.
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send a feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly. [YouTube Help: stream keys] YouTube’s dual-stream guidance describes using RTMP(S) and a second key for the vertical feed. [YouTube Help: dual streaming]

Run a preflight before the event
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event, if using one.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start so you can inspect the preview and fix issues.
- Review the Live Control Room preview, check that any local recording is intact, and confirm that the event can be viewed on a mobile device.
- For dual feeds, leave 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the combined stream bitrate requirement, as YouTube recommends. [YouTube Help: encoder setup] [YouTube Help: network guidance]
Know the vertical-feed tradeoffs
YouTube’s comparison of vertical and horizontal live viewing notes that some features available elsewhere may not be available to viewers in the vertical feed. These include clickable links in chat or the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, Premieres, and Live Redirect. Check YouTube’s current feature comparison before building an event around any of these options, because feature availability can change. [YouTube Help: vertical live feature comparison]
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Vertical viewing is missing: Confirm that the vertical format was configured before the stream started. YouTube says it cannot be added once a stream is underway.
- The portrait view cuts off the subject: In Live Control Room, adjust the vertical layout, zoom, or position; try fit-to-phone-width or stacked instead of the default center crop.
- The phone changes orientation unexpectedly: Lock screen rotation and test the composition before going live.
- The encoder feed appears in the wrong format: Verify that the portrait and landscape feeds are assigned to their matching stream keys and that the vertical preview is set to Encoder, not Auto.
- The preview is unstable or the stream struggles: Check the connection and available upload bandwidth against the combined bitrate for both feeds. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond that requirement.
- The phone may run out of power: Charge it, limit interruptions with Do Not Disturb, and consider an external battery pack. The battery estimate is only a rough guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
The workflows above are for live video from a phone or encoder. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plans and pricing, then start your free day.
