To run a 24/7 YouTube live stream on an Azure virtual machine, run an encoder on a Linux VM, connect it to YouTube Live over RTMPS using your stream URL and key, and keep the source, network capacity, monitoring, and recovery plan in place. “24/7” describes the intended schedule, not guaranteed uptime: a VM restart, stopped encoder, ended source, network fault, or YouTube ingest interruption can stop the broadcast.
How the setup works
The basic path is video or live input → encoder on an Azure VM → YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VM does not itself create a YouTube broadcast; it runs the software that sends encoded audio and video to YouTube. YouTube then distributes the stream to viewers.
You can keep the source media on the VM, or send a live feed to an encoder running there. These are architectural choices, not performance rankings:

Check YouTube eligibility and create the live stream
Do this before provisioning for a launch date. YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it and test ahead of time.

- Enable and verify live streaming. Check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility and complete any verification or activation steps. Do not leave first-time activation until the day of the broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Store the key as a secret. Enter it only in the encoder’s protected configuration. Do not paste it into public documentation, screenshots, chat, or source code. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose an event approach. Decide whether you need a scheduled event with planned boundaries or a continuous broadcast. A long-running schedule still needs operational oversight and an archive plan.
Provision an Azure Linux VM securely
- Choose a region and Linux image. Select the Azure region and Linux distribution appropriate for your workload and administration needs. VM prices and available sizes vary by region and configuration.
- Create the VM with SSH-key administration. Use Azure’s VM deployment flow and configure SSH public-key authentication rather than relying on an exposed password-based administrative login.
- Restrict network access. Attach a network security group and limit inbound SSH access to the addresses or network that need to administer the VM. The encoder sends its stream out to YouTube; do not open a public media-ingest port on the VM unless your chosen source architecture actually requires one.
- Decide whether the VM needs a public IP. A public IP can support inbound administration and predictable outbound connectivity, but the right design depends on how you will manage egress and connect to the VM. Azure charges may apply for a public IP.
- Install and configure your encoder. Choose an encoder that supports the source and YouTube’s required output settings. The exact installation steps and process configuration depend on the Linux distribution and encoder; validate the vendor’s current instructions rather than applying an unverified command.
Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
In the encoder, set YouTube’s RTMPS server URL as the destination and provide the stream key in the key or authentication field. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, so use the RTMPS endpoint shown for the stream in YouTube Studio rather than treating unencrypted RTMP as equivalent.

A higher resolution or bitrate increases the network capacity the VM needs to sustain and can increase outbound transfer charges. Select a VM size whose published network bandwidth leaves headroom above the encoded bitrate for protocol overhead and any other VM traffic. Azure counts outbound traffic from the VM’s attached network interfaces against its allocated bandwidth; check the exact size specifications for the selected region and workload.

Keep the encoder running and plan recovery
A process supervisor or equivalent managed-process design can be used to launch an encoder when the VM starts and restart it if it exits. That is not the same as proving that a particular encoder command will resume correctly: restart behavior, reconnection behavior, looping at end-of-file, and stream-key changes depend on the encoder and configuration.
- Decide what should happen when the source reaches its end: stop, wait, or start again. Verify the selected encoder’s documented behavior before relying on looping.
- Plan to detect both an encoder exit and a stream that remains connected but is no longer sending useful audio or video.
- Test recovery after a deliberate network interruption and VM restart. Confirm the broadcast returns in YouTube’s preview and that the encoder is sending again.
- Test what happens if the stream key is changed or invalidated, and document how an administrator can update the secret and restart or reconnect the encoder.
- Keep an operator able to check the VM, encoder process, network metrics, YouTube preview, and stream health indicators.
Do not assume that automatic process restart will solve every failure. A supervisor cannot restore a missing source, fix an exhausted disk, or guarantee that YouTube’s ingest endpoint will accept a reconnect.

Test before making the broadcast public
- Use a private or unlisted test. Send representative source material through the full VM-to-YouTube path before relying on it for a public run.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm that video arrives, audio is audible and synchronized, and YouTube does not report a stream-health problem.
- Exercise the long-run cases. Test the source ending, a VM restart, a temporary network interruption, and the encoder’s response to a changed or incorrect key.
- Observe the VM during the test. Check the encoder process, sustained outbound traffic, and storage use. A successful short test alone does not show that the source or process will continue indefinitely.
- Confirm the event and archive plan. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an indefinite 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete archive; plan event boundaries and recordings deliberately.
Troubleshooting common interruptions

Estimate Azure costs for continuous operation
There is no reliable fixed monthly total without a region, VM size, disk configuration, public-IP design, and bitrate. A continuously running VM consumes compute resources continuously, and outbound video transfer can be substantial. Use Azure’s current pricing calculator or portal estimate for the chosen region and configuration.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Being technically able to loop a video does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it or that the channel will qualify for monetization. Use material you own or are licensed to use for this purpose, and check applicable YouTube copyright and reused-content policies before scheduling a long-running stream. Keep records of relevant permissions, including music and other third-party elements. A test stream verifies the technical path; it does not grant content rights or establish policy compliance.
