Either a Raspberry Pi or an old PC can be the right choice—but only if that exact machine can sustain your stream’s workload. A simple relay of an already-encoded feed may suit a Pi; OBS scenes, capture devices, scaling, or live encoding can demand more from the system. Define the source and output first, check the encoder and software support on the actual hardware, then test a representative stream before trusting it unattended. The available documentation does not establish that every Pi can encode every stream, or that a Pi is always cheaper or more reliable than an old PC.

Which should you use for a 24/7 YouTube live stream?

Choose by workload, not by device label. If your video is already encoded and requires little processing, a Raspberry Pi may be sufficient—provided its specific software and encoder path passes a sustained test. If you need OBS, scene composition, capture hardware, or live encoding, assess the old PC’s actual CPU or hardware encoder, operating system, and performance at your intended output settings.

OBS cautions that a system meeting its basic requirements is not necessarily capable of streaming a particular workload. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect performance (OBS System Requirements). There is no matched 24/7 test here for an unspecified Pi and old PC, so neither general reliability nor operating-cost claims can be settled without testing your own setup.

Compare the machines against your actual stream

What to check Why it matters
Source and processing Determine whether the incoming video is already encoded or whether the machine must capture, composite scenes, scale, or encode it. A simple relay and an OBS production have different compute demands.
Output target Write down resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate. Then verify that the chosen machine can sustain those settings, rather than assuming a specification sheet proves it can.
Encoder support Check the software and OS support for the exact CPU or hardware encoder. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but encoder generation affects image quality.
Sustained operation Run representative video and audio for several hours. Watch for dropped frames, temperature or throttling warnings, audio gaps, and whether the stream resumes after a restart or network interruption.
Power and total setup cost Measure power at the wall with the actual workload, power supply, storage, capture devices, and network equipment. Include accessories you genuinely need; historical figures for other Pi models and test setups are not a direct comparison.
Network and monitoring Confirm stable upload headroom and decide how you will observe stream health and recover from a failure. A successful initial connection does not demonstrate unattended recovery.

Set a realistic YouTube output target

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio, and supports up to 60 fps. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a given Pi or PC can produce them reliably. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

H.264 output example YouTube recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

Use a quality setting your upload connection can sustain, rather than selecting a bitrate just because the encoder accepts it. YouTube advises testing upload speed, including representative audio and movement in preflight tests, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its guidance is explicit: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A wired connection is a practical choice where available, but it does not remove the need to test.

Check encoder capability on the old PC and Raspberry Pi

Old PC

Identify the actual CPU, GPU, operating system, and available encoder options before choosing settings. OBS generally recommends modern hardware encoding because it shifts work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. However, OBS also warns that earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software x264 at its default veryfast preset. See the OBS hardware encoding guide for its encoder and platform caveats.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 16GB Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (16GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

Do not assume an old PC has a usable hardware encoder just because it has a graphics card. Confirm that the encoder is supported by your OS and streaming software, then test the real scene and output settings. If software encoding is needed, verify sustained CPU performance rather than relying on a short preview.

Raspberry Pi

Use the hardware documentation for the exact board to check interfaces, memory, and connectivity. For example, Raspberry Pi’s reference lists Raspberry Pi 4 Model B configurations up to 8 GB and Raspberry Pi 500 with 8 GB and Gigabit Ethernet; those specifications do not by themselves prove sustained live-stream encoding capability. A Raspberry Pi 5 is an option to evaluate, not a guarantee that a particular stream will work.

Power requirements vary by model and attached devices. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance specifies 5 V/5 A for Pi 5 and Pi 500 (with 5 V/3 A limiting peripherals), 5 V/3 A for Pi 4 and Pi 400, and 5 V/2.5 A for Pi 3. Choose a power supply suitable for your Raspberry Pi model and its connected peripherals.

Raspberry Pi’s published approximate power measurements for Pi 1 through Pi 4 used specified test setups and operating-system images from 2016 or, for Pi 4, 2019. The documentation notes that additional USB devices can increase consumption. Those historical measurements are not current Pi 5 figures and cannot be compared directly with an unspecified old PC. Measure your complete setup at the wall to estimate its actual energy use.

A practical decision and test sequence

  1. Define the feed: note whether the source is already encoded, and whether the computer needs to capture, edit, composite, or scale it.
  2. Choose the output: set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current guidance and your upload capacity.
  3. Verify the encoder path: check the exact machine, OS, and software for supported hardware encoding or sufficient software-encoding performance.
  4. Run a representative preflight: include the real audio, motion, scenes, and connected devices. Check dropped frames, image quality, audio continuity, heat or throttling, and stream health.
  5. Test failure and recovery: deliberately test a restart and a network interruption, and establish how you will notice a dropped stream and restore it.
  6. Measure power: use a wall meter on the entire intended setup while it is doing the real job. Compare measured consumption and the cost of required accessories, not generic device estimates.

If an old PC already sustains the workload and its measured power is acceptable, reusing it may avoid buying a Pi whose capability for that stream remains unverified. If the workload is simple and the Pi passes the same test, its compact form may be useful. The right answer is the machine that works reliably at the chosen settings in your own setup.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream starts but drops frames: lower the output target or bitrate, check upload stability, and test encoder load with representative motion and scenes. A nominal system requirement is not proof of capacity for the chosen workload.
  • Video quality is worse than expected: check bitrate, encoder choice, and encoder generation. Older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality at a given bitrate than newer options; compare settings using the same source material.
  • Pi behaves inconsistently with peripherals attached: verify that the model’s supply is adequate for the board and attached devices; the Pi power guidance notes that peripheral demand can affect requirements.
  • Stream does not resume after interruption: test restart and reconnect behavior rather than assuming it is automatic. Keep a way to monitor YouTube stream health and intervene if recovery fails.
  • Long run succeeds once, then fails later: extend testing and observe temperature, throttling, audio continuity, and network conditions. One successful setup does not establish 24/7 reliability.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Before looping recorded material, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, images, and other included content. A technically stable stream does not establish that its content complies with copyright requirements or YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies, and use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid. Do not assume that repeating a recording makes it eligible for monetization; channel eligibility and content decisions are separate from whether the stream stays online.
