You can use a Raspberry Pi as a dedicated host to capture a camera feed, encode it, and send it to YouTube Live. The Pi does not make 24/7 operation automatic: the exact model, camera, encoder settings, power, network, cooling, and recovery plan must work together, and neither YouTube nor Raspberry Pi guarantees uninterrupted streaming. Use the setup below as a starting point, then test your complete system for an extended run before relying on it unattended.

What you need before starting

  • A Raspberry Pi with supported boot media and a power supply suitable for that model.
  • A compatible video source, such as a Raspberry Pi camera or USB camera, plus encoder software that supports it.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream profile. Wired Ethernet may be practical where available, but it does not guarantee uptime.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream, with live streaming enabled.
  • A plan for monitoring the camera, encoder, network, and YouTube broadcast, and for restoring service after a failure.

There is no universally established minimum Pi model for a particular resolution or continuous run time. Choose hardware and settings by compatibility and sustained testing, not by assuming a model can handle a target profile.

Prepare YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. If the channel has never streamed, YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one, then copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder’s private configuration.
  3. Keep the stream key secret. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, or shared configuration. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Set up the Raspberry Pi and video source

  1. Install Raspberry Pi OS on supported boot media and complete the initial configuration for your Pi.
  2. Connect the selected source. A Raspberry Pi camera and a compatible USB camera are possible routes, but compatibility depends on the camera and encoder software. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance covers model-appropriate power and wireless considerations.
  3. Use a power supply suitable for the exact Pi model. Check that the model and wireless adapter support the network band you intend to use; not every model or adapter supports 5 GHz. Use Ethernet if practical for your installation, while recognizing that a wired link alone cannot prevent power, host, ISP, or YouTube interruptions.
  4. Mount the Pi and camera so they have appropriate airflow and cannot be easily unplugged. Test the actual enclosure and placement under the expected operating conditions.

Install and configure an encoder

Choose an encoder compatible with both your camera and the YouTube ingest protocol. The exact installation commands and controls vary by software and camera, so follow that encoder’s documentation rather than copying commands for a different capture path.

  1. Configure the encoder to capture from the selected camera or input.
  2. Enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room in the encoder’s private settings.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint supplied in Live Control Room when the encoder supports it. RTMPS encrypts RTMP using TLS/SSL; copy the actual RTMPS URL rather than assuming the ordinary RTMP address. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  4. Protect the configuration containing the key, and ensure it is available after a reboot without exposing it to other users or public logs.

If the encoder reports an SSL or connection error, confirm that RTMPS is supported, that you copied the correct endpoint and port, and that the encoder’s protocol settings match YouTube’s current instructions.

Choose a stream profile the whole setup can sustain

Start with YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. YouTube identifies H.264 as a supported video codec, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match resolution and frame rate to the available upload capacity and what the Pi can sustain in a real, prolonged capture-and-encode test.

  • Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you choose; there is no single upload-speed figure that is sufficient for every profile.
  • Leave practical capacity headroom for fluctuations in the internet connection rather than running at its measured peak.
  • Test representative motion and audio. A static scene can conceal problems that appear with movement or more complex sound.
  • Monitor YouTube’s stream health and warnings during tests. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for different viewer formats, but this does not compensate for an unstable upload from the Pi.

Do not treat a short successful test as proof of continuous reliability. The Pi’s capture interface, encoding workload, cooling, power supply, network stability, and software all affect the result. The reviewed official guidance does not publish a comparative 24/7 Pi benchmark or guarantee a model can maintain a given profile.

Start the stream and verify the viewing path

  1. Start the encoder and confirm that the incoming preview appears in Live Control Room.
  2. Check stream health and review any warnings before making the broadcast public or scheduling an unattended run.
  3. Go live in Live Control Room when required by the workflow you selected, then verify playback from a separate device or connection.
  4. Test audio, image framing, motion, and synchronization with the source as it will actually be used.

YouTube’s encoder workflow says to stop sending content and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive threshold is not a recommended broadcast duration or evidence that one stream can remain live indefinitely. For continuous service, check current YouTube lifecycle behavior and your encoder’s reconnect and broadcast-management behavior before relying on an unattended schedule.

Plan for outages and unattended operation

A 24/7 installation needs more than an encoder start command. Decide how you will detect each failure and who or what will act on an alert. The following are design checks, not promises that a particular recovery method will work:

  • Camera stall: determine how to notice a frozen or missing image and how the camera or capture process can be restarted.
  • Encoder exit: decide how the process will be detected and restarted, and how repeated failures will be reported rather than hidden.
  • Network outage: check whether the encoder reconnects after connectivity returns and confirm that YouTube still accepts the broadcast.
  • Power loss or reboot: confirm that the Pi boots into the intended capture and encoder workflow, and that the stream can be restored without manual intervention.
  • YouTube state change: define how you will notice if the broadcast ends or requires action in Live Control Room.

Run a supervised soak test with the final camera, settings, power arrangement, enclosure, and network. Observe the stream and recovery behavior over an extended period, including a controlled reboot or network interruption if safe. A successful test increases confidence in that particular setup; it does not prove indefinite uptime.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom What to check Practical next step
No preview in Live Control Room Encoder input, camera compatibility, server URL, stream key, and whether the encoder is actually sending. Confirm the camera works in the chosen capture path, then re-enter the current URL and key from Live Control Room.
RTMPS or SSL connection error Whether the encoder supports RTMPS, and whether the selected protocol, endpoint, and port match. Copy the RTMPS endpoint shown by YouTube and check the encoder’s protocol documentation and network requirements.
Warnings or unstable stream health Upload variability, selected bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and sustained Pi encoding performance. Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, reduce the profile if needed, leave network headroom, and repeat a representative-motion test.
Stream drops after running for a while Camera or encoder stalls, host reboot, power interruption, network outage, or a YouTube broadcast-state change. Use logs and monitoring to identify the failure point, test the relevant restart or reconnect path, and verify recovery in Live Control Room.
Wireless connection is unavailable or unreliable Whether the exact Pi model and wireless adapter support the intended band, including 5 GHz. Check the hardware specifications and consider Ethernet where the installation permits; validate the complete network path.

When a Raspberry Pi is the right approach

A Pi is relevant when you need a live camera or other locally captured source encoded at the installation. It requires you to select compatible capture and encoder software and to maintain the host, power, network, monitoring, and recovery plan. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, that is a different workflow from capturing a live camera feed.
