There is no single Azure VM size that suits every 24/7 YouTube stream. If your VM only relays pre-encoded video, start by testing a small general-purpose CPU VM. If it must encode video in real time, benchmark the encoder at your intended resolution, frame rate and codec before choosing a size. A GPU is optional—not a default—and is appropriate only when your encoder, operating system, driver and Azure region support it.
Choose the output settings first, then size the VM around measured workload, sustained network needs and total operating cost. The guidance below is workload-based; no specific Azure SKU has been established as a benchmarked YouTube-streaming choice.
First decide what the VM has to do
A 24/7 schedule does not by itself determine how much compute you need. The key difference is whether your VM sends an already-encoded feed or creates the encoded video itself.
Looping or relaying pre-encoded video
When the source is already encoded and the VM primarily sends it to YouTube, try a small general-purpose CPU VM first. Increase capacity only if monitoring shows CPU, memory, disk or network pressure. This is a practical starting point, not a Microsoft-published SKU prescription.

Encoding video in real time
Live software encoding can be CPU-bound. Test the actual encoder with the intended source count, resolution, frame rate and codec on candidate general-purpose sizes. A title such as “1080p” is not enough to predict CPU use: scene complexity and encoder settings also affect the workload.
Using GPU acceleration
Consider a GPU VM only if the encoder supports the relevant acceleration and the guest OS, driver, region and quota all match. Check current Azure availability and pricing before choosing a family. Microsoft’s GPU guidance emphasizes workload-specific matching; its Azure Virtual Desktop recommendations are not benchmarks for a headless YouTube encoder. Do not use NVv4 as a new default: Microsoft lists its retirement date as September 30, 2026, and says it supports Windows guests only.
Set the YouTube output before sizing
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its recommended bitrates for the combinations below are listed in the YouTube Help encoder settings table; consult that table for other output combinations rather than extrapolating.

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not guarantees of the bandwidth a particular VM will sustain. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the combined streaming bitrate. For a single feed, that means planning headroom above its target bitrate; allow for any other concurrent outgoing traffic as well. An advertised maximum VM network rate is not a guarantee of stable, continuous ingest.

Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during operation. A static test clip may not reveal issues that appear with the actual content or workload.
Compare candidate sizes against the workload
Azure VM size affects processing power, memory, storage capacity and network bandwidth. When two or more candidates remain, compare them against the same real workload and deployment conditions:

- Encoding capacity: Measure CPU use for software encoding, or verify that the intended GPU encoder path works with the chosen guest OS and driver.
- Memory and disk: Account for the encoder and how your media is stored, staged or read during the loop.
- Sustained network: Confirm the connection can maintain the feed with the recommended headroom, and monitor for interruptions.
- Deployment fit: Check regional SKU availability, quota, OS and driver compatibility before committing.
- Total cost: Include runtime, OS, separate storage, outbound data and any GPU or software licensing.
Do not infer a specific recommended SKU from a family name or maximum network figure. No exact Azure SKU or monthly bill can be established without your region, OS, source, encoder settings, workload and egress assumptions.

A useful monthly estimate needs the Azure region, OS, VM size, hours running, disk and outbound data, plus any GPU or software licensing. A 24/7 workload runs continuously while the VM is allocated. Azure says partial VM hours are charged by the minute and storage is priced separately; compare estimates on the same runtime basis rather than using a few peak hours or a stopped-but-allocated instance as though it were a full-time stream.

Use the Azure pricing calculator with the actual deployment inputs, then verify regional availability and quota. Microsoft’s Linux VDI guidance also identifies software licensing, support, image maintenance, monitoring, storage and network egress as total-cost considerations. A published VM compute price alone will not describe the whole operating cost.

Plan for recovery, credentials and long broadcasts
Keep the stream recoverable
A production setup needs process supervision, restart recovery, alerting, log retention and a tested network route. Decide how the encoder or relay restarts after a process or VM interruption, and verify that the feed returns to YouTube rather than assuming that a running VM means a healthy broadcast.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder credential and address used to send the feed. Treat it as secret operational data: restrict access, avoid putting it in public scripts or logs, and rotate it if it is exposed.
Decide how to handle archives
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 channel should plan for its long-running stream events and archive or VOD expectations; do not assume one uninterrupted broadcast will become a single endlessly archived video.
