You can run OBS on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine and send its output to YouTube, but a running VPS alone does not make a reliable 24/7 stream. You also need a supported live-enabled YouTube channel, a server configuration that can handle your encoder workload, enough sustained outbound bandwidth, and a way to monitor and recover the stream.
This guide lays out the deployment and the checks that matter. OBS installation commands and headless-display setup depend on the exact Linux image and release; confirm the current OBS instructions for your chosen operating system before running commands. The available official OBS Linux page does not establish a safe, version-specific command or headless recipe.
Before you begin
Plan the stream before creating the VM. A prerecorded loop, a complex OBS scene, and a camera capture have different CPU, memory, storage, and operational needs. OCI offers VM shapes with different resources, and flexible shapes let you select CPU and memory; networking capacity also varies with OCPUs. Check current regional availability and Free Tier limits rather than assuming an eligible free instance can encode a particular resolution or run without interruption. Oracle’s compute overview describes the shape options.
- An OCI account and a Linux VM image whose release is supported by the current OBS installation instructions.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Eligibility and activation requirements are described in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- A content source: media files for a playlist or loop, or the OBS scene and sources you intend to broadcast.
- A secure administrative path, normally SSH, and permission to connect to the VM.
- A realistic target for resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Test that target on the selected VM rather than inferring its capability from the shape name.
For a prerecorded broadcast, also make sure you have the rights to stream every video, image, and audio track. A livestream can receive a Content ID claim, be interrupted, or face other enforcement even if a video is available elsewhere online. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running stream.

Create and secure the OCI virtual machine
Choose capacity based on the actual workload
OBS must render the scene and encode the output unless your chosen workflow uses a suitable hardware encoder. The required capacity depends on the scene, codec implementation, resolution, frame rate, and any acceleration available to the instance. Begin with a modest test workload, observe CPU and memory use, and increase resources if encoding falls behind or the process becomes unstable. Do not treat Free Tier eligibility as evidence of a particular encoding performance.
Set up network access without opening unnecessary ports
Use SSH for administration and restrict that access to addresses you trust where practical. The encoder connection to YouTube is outbound; you do not need to open arbitrary inbound ports simply to send a stream. Check the OCI security-list or network security group rules and the Linux image’s own firewall behavior for the exact configuration. Oracle’s network security rules documentation explains OCI controls.
Plan storage and access
Allow for the operating system, OBS, logs, and any local media used by the stream. Store the YouTube stream key as a secret: do not place it in a public script, screenshot, shared terminal recording, or source-control repository. Limit who can log in to the VM, keep the system maintained, and have a way to recover access if the instance is restarted.

Install OBS on the selected Linux release
There is no safe universal install command for every OCI Linux image: OBS package availability and installation instructions vary by distribution and release. First identify the image and release in the VM, then follow the current official instructions for that exact system at OBS Studio’s Linux installation page. Do not copy a command intended for a different Ubuntu or Linux release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Connect to the VM over SSH and confirm the distribution and release using its documented system-information method.
- Open the OBS Linux instructions and select the matching distribution and release. Check that the listed packages and repositories are still supported for that version.
- Install OBS using those instructions, then verify that the installed application starts successfully in the session you intend to use.
- Before configuring a long-running job, validate how OBS will obtain a display and audio devices on this headless server. A typical VPS has no physical monitor or desktop login; a GUI application cannot be assumed to run correctly just because it is installed. Use a headless method only after validating it for your OS release and OBS build.
The installation page alone does not establish a particular headless display arrangement or a reliable service command. Test the chosen session method, startup behavior, and restart behavior before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
Configure YouTube and OBS output
Create the live destination and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream destination. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to use an encoder with a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast if appropriate, and confirm the preview and stream health in the Live Control Room before making the stream public.
Choose an ingest profile and verify the workload
YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For SDR H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds), and a frame rate up to 60 fps. Its current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these 1080p ingest figures:

|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a promise that your VM can encode or upload at those settings. Use the corresponding row for your intended format and codec; other codecs have different recommendations. YouTube also lists AAC or MP3 audio and says incoming streams are transcoded for viewer playback. See the complete, current YouTube encoder settings guide before finalizing OBS output.
Test bandwidth, video, and audio before leaving it live
YouTube says the total outgoing stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% extra upload capacity. For example, a 10 Mbps stream implies planning for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload under that recommendation. This is planning guidance, not a guaranteed threshold for a particular OCI region or route; validate the real stream from your VM.

- Run a test with representative motion and audio, not just a static image. Watch CPU and memory use as well as OBS’s dropped frames and encoding indicators.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the resulting watch page as a viewer would see it.
- Listen for audio problems and inspect video for freezes, black frames, wrong aspect ratio, or unexpected scaling.
- Keep a margin above the chosen bitrate; network conditions and competing activity can affect what remains available to the stream.
YouTube recommends testing ahead of a scheduled event, checking the preview, and continuing to monitor audio and video. Its streaming tips say to start an encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep the process recoverable and monitor the stream
A VPS being powered on does not prove that OBS is running, encoding correctly, or connected to YouTube. A process can exit, the display session can fail, the network route can change, or YouTube can stop receiving the stream. Use a tested process-supervision and restart approach that matches your headless display/session setup; validate that it can restart OBS into the correct session rather than merely launching a process with no usable display.
- Check the Live Control Room after launch and at intervals appropriate to the channel’s needs.
- Keep OBS and system logs available so you can distinguish an encoder failure from a network or YouTube ingest problem.
- Test what happens after an OBS restart and after a VM reboot before depending on the stream.
- Have a manual recovery path: log in, inspect the process and logs, restart the validated session, and confirm YouTube is receiving the stream again.
- Keep the media and configuration backed up, but protect the stream key in any backup.
Neither a cloud VM nor an automatic process restart guarantees uninterrupted YouTube broadcasting. Plan for checks and recovery, and do not advertise uptime you have not established.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS installs but will not open: Confirm that the package instructions match the Linux release and that the session has the required display environment. Recheck the official OBS steps for that specific system.
- OBS starts but shows a blank or missing preview: On a headless machine, check the display/session arrangement and each source’s availability. Test the exact launch method interactively before automating it.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the destination, stream key, outbound connectivity, and that the channel is enabled for live streaming. If the key may have leaked, reset it.
- Dropped frames or unstable ingest: Check whether the sustained outbound path can support the stream with headroom, then test a lower bitrate or less demanding output profile. Also check for CPU saturation or encoder lag.
- Encoding lag or overloaded VM: Reduce resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, or bitrate, or move to a VM with more suitable resources; re-test rather than assuming the change solved it.
- Stream stops after restart or disconnect: Check the OBS process, session, and logs, then confirm YouTube ingest. Validate a restart strategy that launches the full working session, not only OBS itself.
- Live stream is interrupted or claimed: Review the content’s rights and YouTube’s notices. A stream key or encoder setting cannot override copyright enforcement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is looping uploaded videos on YouTube rather than operating OBS and a Linux session, StreamNeo is a cloud service made for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans, then start the free day.
