If your Raspberry Pi stream shows as offline, find where the signal stops before changing hardware: check that the encoder is running, its stream URL and key match the event in YouTube Live Control Room, and the Control Room receives a preview. Those checks separate a Pi or capture problem from an ingest, network, or viewer-status problem.

First, identify where the stream stops

Open the correct event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then start the encoder on the Pi. Check the result at each point:

  • No local camera feed or encoder error: investigate the camera, capture process, encoding, or Pi load.
  • Local feed works, but the Control Room has no preview: check the stream key, destination URL and protocol, then outbound network connectivity.
  • Control Room preview appears, but the channel or watch page looks offline: check the event’s live status and whether you clicked Go Live when required.
  • Preview appears but viewers have playback trouble: investigate stream quality and connection stability rather than replacing the camera first.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder’s output, errors, CPU load, and the stream preview. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps can help distinguish encoder trouble from later problems.

Check the YouTube stream key and event settings

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or current live event and its Live Control Room stream settings.
  2. Compare the stream URL and stream key shown there with the server and key configured in the Pi encoder. Both must belong to the same event and match exactly.
  3. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder with the current one, then restart the stream.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address; do not include one in screenshots, logs, or public posts. If it may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.

See YouTube’s instructions for managing live-stream settings and its encoder setup and preview workflow. A stale key is especially worth checking after a reset or when switching events.

Verify the Pi’s camera feed and encoder

Check capture before changing streaming settings

Confirm the capture process is running and that the camera feed looks and sounds right on the Pi. Read the encoder’s status or error output and check CPU load. If the local feed itself is missing or faulty, the problem is upstream of YouTube: investigate camera detection, capture configuration, audio input, or encoding before changing the event’s key.

Account for Raspberry Pi model and software

Raspberry Pi’s current camera documentation describes rpicam-vid for capture and a libav backend for audio/video encoding and network streaming. The right configuration depends on the Pi model, camera, installed software, audio source, and protocol, so a command copied from another setup is not a universal fix. Consult the Raspberry Pi rpicam-vid documentation for the applicable options.

  • DC 5. 1V 3 Amp Power Supply
  • 15. 3 watts, 1. 5M cable (18AWG)
  • Item Weight: 3.84 ounces

On Raspberry Pi 5, video encoding uses software encoders. Raspberry Pi documents a --low-latency option that may reduce encoding latency, with lower coding efficiency and potentially a lower maximum frame rate as trade-offs. The documentation says 1080p30 should still be achievable in that context. These are encoding considerations, not evidence that a Pi 5 is inherently responsible for an offline stream.

Check the destination URL, protocol, and connection

Use the current ingest URL

Compare the encoder’s destination with the URL currently displayed in the event’s Live Control Room settings; do not rely on a hard-coded example if the event gives you a different URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For a timeout or SSL error, check that the URL uses the correct rtmps protocol and server, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s guidance also suggests specifying port 443 for an SSL error where appropriate. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

RasTech for Raspberry Pi 5 GaN PD 27W Power Supply 5.1V 5A USB-C Pi 5 Power Adapter for Raspberry Pi 5 16GB/8GB/4GB/2GB
  • Standard: The black GaN 27W USB-C PD Power Supply (with 1.3M Length) for Pi 5 Output: 5.1V/5A Input: AC100-240V; It allows the the Pi 5 to power a wider range of peripherals.
  • High Quality Power Solution: This GaN power supply can supply for Raspberry Pi 5 current up to 5.1V/5A to Pi 5 motherboard. In addition, there is no problem that low voltage appears even in full-load power operation.
  • 6-layer Protection Function: Includes various functions such as over-power protection, over-current protection, short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection, low-voltage protection, and electrostatic protection.
  • Good Compatibility: The GaN 27W PD USB-C Power Supply is also capable of delivering 5A@5.1V ,3A @ 9V, 2.25A @ 12V, and 1.8A @ 15V to PD-compatible products, making it a good cost-effective power supply for many general-purpose.Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 16GB/8GB/4GB/2GB
  • For Pi 5:The total power drawn from the four USB ports on Pi 5 is limited by default to a nominal 600mA; this limit is automatically increased to a nominal 1.6A when the USB-C PD Power Supply is detected.

Test upload capacity and reliability

Test the connection’s upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom beyond the combined primary and backup stream bitrate. That is a recommendation, not a guaranteed failure threshold: a connection disruption can still break a stream. If Wi-Fi seems unstable, trying a wired connection is a useful diagnostic, though YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe Ethernet specifically. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Confirm preview and live status

For a scheduled encoder stream, start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview before selecting Go Live. Then check the event’s channel or watch page. A missing Control Room preview means the feed has not reached YouTube, so return to the encoder, destination, key, and network checks. If the preview is present but the public page still appears offline, verify the event status and that the live transition was completed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your aim is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home, uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
