There is no evidence here to name a cost or performance winner between Linode and AWS Lightsail for an India-based 24/7 YouTube stream. Akamai (Linode) documents core sites in Chennai and Mumbai as optimized for India, while AWS Lightsail bundles include compute, storage and a transfer allowance that varies by AWS Region. Choose by matching resources and regional transfer terms, then test the actual outbound route to YouTube at your intended bitrate.
If you want to avoid operating a virtual machine, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it keeps uploaded videos looping on YouTube with no home computer left running, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Details: StreamNeo.
What matters most for a 24/7 stream
A virtual machine must continuously send your encoder output to YouTube. The practical decision is not just the instance’s monthly headline price: it is whether the selected region has adequate outbound transfer, whether the VM can sustain the workload, and how you will recover after a process, host or network interruption.
- Region and route: Select a region suitable for the stream source and intended audience, then measure the VM-to-YouTube path. Physical proximity alone does not prove better throughput or reliability.
- Comparable resources: Compare vCPU, RAM, storage and CPU allocation on equivalent plans. The cited sources do not establish matched performance for Linode and Lightsail.
- Transfer and overages: Calculate expected monthly traffic at the actual bitrate and confirm the chosen region’s allowance and overage terms.
- Operations: Plan process supervision, logs, restart behavior, backups and a tested recovery or failover procedure.
India regions and the limits of the comparison
Linode (Akamai Cloud)
Akamai says its Chennai and Mumbai core sites are optimized for the India market. That is provider guidance, not a measured latency or streaming benchmark. For work serving the wider Asia-Pacific region and communicating with Akamai core sites outside India, Akamai recommends Singapore or Sydney. Akamai’s data-center guidance

AWS Lightsail
Lightsail bundles provide compute, RAM, storage and a data-transfer allowance, with hourly billing up to the monthly maximum. AWS states that transfer allowances vary by Region. The cited material does not provide a matched India-region comparison with Akamai’s Asia-Pacific pricing, so do not treat similarly priced rows as proof of equivalent India-region cost or performance. Published plan examples—not a like-for-like verdict
| Provider/source | Published example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Akamai Cloud (Linode) | Nanode 1 GB: $5/month; 1 TB transfer | Example from Akamai’s Asia-Pacific pricing table; confirm current regional terms. |
| Akamai Cloud (Linode) | 2 GB: $12/month; 2 TB transfer | Example from Akamai’s Asia-Pacific pricing table; confirm current regional terms. |
| Akamai Cloud (Linode) | 4 GB: $24/month; 4 TB transfer | Example from Akamai’s Asia-Pacific pricing table; confirm current regional terms. |
| AWS Lightsail | 4 GB Linux bundle: $24/month; 4 TB transfer | AWS bundle documentation example; transfer allowance varies by Region. This is not established as a matched India-region comparison. |
Akamai says core-region instances have metered outbound transfer with a prorated allowance ranging from 1 TB to 20 TB depending on plan. Check the applicable region’s current allowance and overage terms; AWS likewise says its bundle allowance varies by Region. Akamai billing guidance

Estimate the stream’s monthly transfer
Use the stream’s actual bitrate, not a generic allowance assumption. At a steady 1 Mbps, the arithmetic is about 0.324 TB decimal over 30 days before protocol overhead: 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. At 5 Mbps, that is about 1.62 TB decimal before overhead. These are calculations from bitrate and duration, not vendor-published traffic figures.
Compare the estimate with the selected region’s outbound allowance and verify how the provider counts traffic sent to YouTube, whether the allowance is prorated, and what charges or restrictions apply after it is exceeded. Leave room for protocol overhead and operational variation.

Configure YouTube ingest and test the route
- Choose encoder settings for the target format. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. It recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe frequency and RTMPS when supported. Match the settings to your encoder and intended output. YouTube encoder settings
- Protect the stream key. Enter the YouTube stream key only in the encoder or service that needs it; do not publish it in scripts, logs or screenshots. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before resuming.
- Allow bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% beyond the total streaming bitrate. Check sustained outbound throughput and reliability from the actual VM region to the intended YouTube ingest path; a provider’s location description is not a substitute for this test. YouTube streaming tips
- Run a test before depending on it. Confirm YouTube Live Control Room receives the stream and check stream health at the desired resolution and bitrate. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live.
- Exercise recovery. Test what happens if the encoder process stops, the VM reboots or the network path is interrupted. Configure process supervision and restart behavior, retain useful logs, and document a manual recovery or backup procedure.
YouTube’s cited guidance covers encoder configuration and stream health; it does not establish eligibility or policy details specific to every 24-hour broadcast. Review YouTube’s current rules for your content and channel rather than assuming continuous broadcasting is automatically permitted or prohibited.
How to choose between the providers
- Shortlist a region and instance on each service. Confirm availability and current pricing for the specific region, not just a global or Asia-Pacific example.
- Match the workload. Compare vCPU, RAM, storage and CPU allocation. The published plan rows above do not prove equivalent performance.
- Compare effective transfer cost. Calculate the 30-day traffic at your bitrate, then check the precise regional allowance and overage policy.
- Measure before committing. Test outbound throughput, connection stability and YouTube stream health at the target bitrate from the intended VM.
- Choose based on operations as well as price. Consider familiarity, support, monitoring, restart setup, backup and failover. Available evidence does not establish comparative uptime or recovery behavior for either provider.
Because there is no matched India-region price/performance evidence or comparative route test here, a recommendation should be based on your own current-region quote and stream test, not the superficially similar $24 examples.
