Yes—closing SSH or your remote desktop connection can leave an OBS stream running, provided OBS is already running on the Vultr server and the server itself stays on. Start OBS in the server’s desktop session, confirm YouTube is receiving the feed, then disconnect. This does not protect the stream from an OBS crash, server restart or shutdown, or network failure.

What must stay running

SSH and remote desktop are ways to access the server; they are not the stream itself. In Vultr’s documented Ubuntu workflow, OBS runs in a desktop session on the server. Ending the desktop connection is the final step, after streaming has started and the feed has been checked. The Ubuntu server and OBS process must remain active.

This method keeps OBS running after you disconnect; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. If OBS exits, the server reboots or shuts down, or its network connection fails, the stream may stop. Reconnecting later lets you inspect OBS, but does not by itself prevent those failures.

Prepare the Vultr server

Check the example’s prerequisites

Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu and OBS guide states these minimum server prerequisites for its example:

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  • 2 virtual CPUs (VCPUs)
  • 4 GB memory (RAM)
  • 80 GB storage
  • 3 TB bandwidth

These are the guide’s stated prerequisites, not a guarantee that every scene, output resolution, or encoder workload will run smoothly. The workflow also requires a desktop environment for graphical OBS, plus OBS Studio and FFmpeg. Access the server over SSH as a non-root user with sudo privileges. Check Vultr’s current instance offerings, costs, and configuration before deploying.

Install and access the desktop workflow

Follow Vultr’s Ubuntu guide to deploy the server and install its desktop environment, OBS Studio, and FFmpeg. The guide’s procedure depends on graphical OBS running in that desktop session; a persistent terminal session alone is not a substitute for it. For OBS installation requirements, the OBS Project lists OpenGL 3.3 or later for Linux. Confirm the current OBS installation instructions and compatibility with the Ubuntu image you plan to use.

Start the YouTube stream before disconnecting

  1. Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio. Obtain its stream key for the encoder.
  2. Configure OBS for the intended YouTube stream. Enter the stream key and confirm the service and destination URL. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells YouTube where the encoder sends its feed and enables YouTube to accept it.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential and do not share it. If it is compromised, YouTube documents resetting it in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key.
  4. Check YouTube’s start and stop behavior. YouTube has auto-start and auto-stop controls. Verify their state for the behavior you want; do not assume a stream will start by itself because OBS is configured.
  5. Start streaming in OBS. Before closing the desktop connection, verify that YouTube is receiving the stream and that the channel plays in a browser.
  6. Disconnect from the Ubuntu desktop. Keep the Vultr server running. Reconnect later if you need to inspect OBS or the stream.

Configure recovery and monitor stream health

OBS reconnect settings

Vultr recommends configuring OBS automatic reconnect with a retry delay of 3 seconds or less and at least 1,000 maximum retries. These options can help OBS retry after an interruption. They do not restart OBS after a process crash, turn a stopped server back on, or repair every network failure.

Watch CPU and output performance

Monitor OBS CPU use and the YouTube stream rather than treating a persistent server as proof of good stream quality. Vultr cautions that CPU use above 90% may lead to dropped frames and buffering, and suggests reducing output resolution or moving to a plan with more vCPUs if usage is high. That 90% figure is Vultr’s vendor guidance, not a universal tested cutoff.

Choose between a desktop server and Vultr’s hosted OBS option

The conventional Ubuntu desktop approach gives you control over the OBS environment, but you are responsible for the server, desktop environment, OBS process, and resource use. Vultr also documents a Broadcaster Marketplace App described as browser-accessible OBS with preconfigured streaming settings and deployment on a Vultr instance. It is a separate option, not a required part of the Ubuntu method; check its current configuration and costs before choosing it.

Compare the options by how much system administration you want to do, how much control over OBS configuration you need, whether the server has enough resources for your output, and whether the remote interface fits your workflow. Neither disconnecting SSH nor using a remote interface removes the need to keep the underlying service and server available.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream stops as soon as you disconnect: Confirm OBS was started in the server’s desktop session and that YouTube was receiving the feed before disconnecting. Keep the server running; closing a client cannot preserve a process that has stopped.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check OBS’s selected YouTube service, destination URL, and stream key. In YouTube Studio, verify that you selected the intended stream and checked its auto-start and auto-stop settings.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, then replace the key in OBS. The old key should no longer be treated as secret.
  • There are dropped frames or buffering: Check OBS CPU use and the stream’s condition. If CPU is high, Vultr suggests lowering output resolution or using a plan with more vCPUs.
  • OBS does not reconnect after an interruption: Check the automatic reconnect configuration, including retry delay and maximum retries. Reconnect to the server to inspect OBS if needed; retry settings cannot resolve a stopped server or crashed OBS process.
  • OBS will not install or run on the chosen image: Confirm the current OBS Linux requirements, including OpenGL 3.3 or later, and check compatibility with the Ubuntu image and desktop environment.
