To restart a Raspberry Pi YouTube live stream after a reboot, run your encoder as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. Add a restart policy if you also want systemd to relaunch the encoder after it exits unexpectedly. The service can only stream when its video source, encoder command, network connection, and YouTube stream credentials are working.

What boot startup does—and what it does not do

A service enabled with systemctl enable is scheduled to start when the Pi boots. That covers a reboot, but does not by itself restart a process that later exits. Configure a restart policy for process failures, and consider source and network failures separately: a process can remain running while it is no longer sending usable video.

A reboot also does not guarantee that YouTube resumes the same broadcast or archive. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived” in its encoder streaming instructions; that statement is not a promise about what happens to a particular stream interrupted by a reboot.

Before you configure the Pi

Choose and verify the video source

Decide whether the Pi will capture a locally attached camera or receive a network source such as an IP-camera stream. Check that the camera and capture software work before adding systemd. Commands and device names vary by camera, Pi model, and operating-system setup, so do not assume one capture command applies to every Pi.

One documented Pi 4 project uses Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64-bit (Bookworm), FFmpeg, v4l-utils, and rpicam-apps. That is an example configuration, not a universal compatibility requirement or a guarantee for other hardware. See the YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine project for its specific setup.

Check upload capacity and choose stream settings

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance to choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. There is no single bitrate that is right for every Pi, codec, resolution, frame rate, or internet connection. Measure the available upload capacity and leave room for fluctuations rather than setting the stream at the connection’s theoretical maximum.

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Test with audio and motion like the intended broadcast, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room.

Create or select a YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder configuration. YouTube notes that returning to a stream may load its previous settings, including its key.
  3. When the encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain where to find it; the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default.

Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. Store it in a local configuration file with restricted access, and exclude that file from version control.

Run the encoder as a systemd service

Prepare a stable encoder command

First run the encoder manually and confirm that it can read the chosen camera or network source and reach YouTube. The command depends on the source and encoding choices. A copy-style video path may use less Pi CPU when the source is already suitable, while transcoding can change format or output settings but requires more processing. Confirm that the Pi can sustain the selected workload before making it unattended.

Use absolute paths for the executable and any script or configuration file. Note which Unix user can access the camera, where the command expects to run, and which environment variables it needs. Avoid placing the stream key directly in a command line that may be recorded in process listings or logs.

Create a unit file

Create a service unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-live.service with the correct user, working directory, executable, and configuration for your setup. This is a template: replace the example paths and user with real values, and use your tested encoder command or script.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube live encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=pi
WorkingDirectory=/home/pi/youtube-live
ExecStart=/home/pi/youtube-live/start-stream.sh
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Here, start-stream.sh stands for a local script that starts the encoder with your source, settings, stream URL, and securely stored key. The example user and paths may not exist on your installation. network-online.target requests startup after the system’s network-online target; its behavior depends on the network manager and does not prove that internet access or the camera source is ready. If startup races the source or connection, make the script wait and retry appropriately.

Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart the service after a non-zero exit or similar failure. It cannot detect every bad stream: for example, an encoder that stays alive while receiving no usable camera frames may not exit. Source-specific health checks or a supervisor may be needed for that case. A community project shows one implementation of FFmpeg/systemd recovery, but its lifecycle behavior is project-specific: YouTube-AutoEncoder.

Reload, enable, and start

  1. After creating or changing the unit file, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable it for future boots with sudo systemctl enable youtube-live.service.
  3. Start it now with sudo systemctl start youtube-live.service.
  4. Check the service with sudo systemctl status youtube-live.service.
  5. Inspect recent logs with sudo journalctl -u youtube-live.service -n 100 --no-pager.

Use the actual unit name if you chose a different one. The Pi 4 project documents this reload/enable/start workflow and checks status and journal output in its own setup.

Prove it restarts after a reboot

  1. Start the service and verify that the encoder is sending video and audio in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Reboot the Pi during a test: sudo reboot.
  3. After it comes back, check sudo systemctl status youtube-live.service and sudo journalctl -u youtube-live.service -b --no-pager. The -b option limits journal output to the current boot.
  4. Confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the stream and that the preview and stream health are acceptable. Do not infer success from an active systemd process alone.

Repeat this test after changing the unit, source, key, or network configuration. For an unattended setup, also test the failures you expect to recover from, such as the encoder exiting or the camera temporarily disappearing. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Common problems and fixes

  • Service does not start at boot: Confirm the unit is enabled with systemctl is-enabled youtube-live.service, reload systemd after unit edits, and inspect the current-boot journal. Check that the executable and script paths exist and that the configured user can run them.
  • It starts manually but fails as a service: A service may have a different user, working directory, permissions, or environment from your interactive shell. Set those explicitly in the unit and use absolute paths.
  • Service runs but YouTube receives no stream: Check the encoder logs, stream URL and key, and whether the chosen RTMP/RTMPS protocol is supported. Verify that the camera source is delivering frames and that the Pi has network access.
  • The service does not recover after an encoder exit: Check the unit’s restart policy and journal for the exit status. A boot-enabled service and a runtime restart policy address different situations.
  • The process is active but the camera feed is frozen or missing: A restart policy triggered by process exit may not help if the encoder remains alive. The capture path needs its own detection and recovery behavior; test camera-loss recovery with the actual source.
  • Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Retest with representative movement and audio, reduce output demands to fit measured upload capacity, and use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • The key may have been exposed: Replace or regenerate it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the Pi’s protected local configuration. Do not publish the replacement in code or logs.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel using uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded video, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube and does not replace a Raspberry Pi camera encoder.
