You can loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live event by running FFmpeg on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) compute instance and sending the output to YouTube over RTMPS. The basic workflow is: prepare an eligible YouTube channel and Live Control Room event, put your media file on the instance, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1. This is a live-ingestion workflow; it does not make an ordinary YouTube video replay automatically.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s setup and eligibility details are in its live-streaming help.
- An OCI tenancy and a compute instance with access to your video file, enough CPU or suitable hardware encoding capacity for your chosen settings, and reliable outbound connectivity.
- FFmpeg installed on the instance.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your event.
- An upload connection with spare bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, then testing the stream and monitoring its health in Live Control Room. See its streaming tips.
OCI documents Always Free compute resources and 10 TB per month of outbound data transfer, but these allowances do not guarantee that a suitable instance shape will be available or fast enough for sustained encoding. Always Free compute instances must be created in your tenancy’s home region. Verify current capacity, tenancy limits, workload performance, and your account’s billing state in Oracle Cloud Free Tier information.
Prepare the YouTube Live event and the OCI instance
Enable live streaming and create the event
- In YouTube Studio, complete the channel’s live-streaming setup and confirm the channel is eligible to broadcast.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the actual endpoint shown in your account; do not guess its path or publish the key.
- Keep the URL and key in a protected local configuration or secret store. Avoid placing a real key in a public script, shared terminal transcript, or article.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection details and supported workflows.
Set up OCI and check the media
- Create or select an OCI compute instance. If relying on Always Free compute, use the tenancy home region and check that the desired shape is available and within your tenancy limits.
- Install FFmpeg using the package method appropriate to your instance operating system, then confirm it is available with
ffmpeg -version. - Place the input video somewhere the instance can read, such as its local disk or a mounted volume. Confirm the filename and path, and check the file’s video and audio streams before starting.
- Check that the instance can encode the selected resolution and frame rate without falling behind. OCI’s published free-resource allowances do not establish the performance of a particular instance for your file.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
There is no single bitrate that fits every source. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table and to your source. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps as recommended bitrates. Those figures are specific to those H.264 modes, not universal targets for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.

- Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) among its recommended settings.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. In FFmpeg,
-gsets the GOP size in frames, so the correct value depends on frame rate. For example,-g 60corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps only. - Bandwidth: Allow at least 20% spare upload capacity above the selected stream bitrate, as recommended in YouTube’s streaming tips. Leave additional room if other traffic shares the connection.
- Input pacing: FFmpeg’s
-rereads a file at its native frame rate. It can make file input timing resemble a live feed; do not apply it indiscriminately to a genuine live-capture input. - Encoding versus copying: Re-encoding lets you choose output codec and bitrate but consumes instance resources. Stream copy avoids video re-encoding, but only works when the source’s codecs and format are compatible with the YouTube ingest workflow and desired output. Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements before choosing.
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for particular workflows, including codecs not supported over RTMP. For a typical FFmpeg H.264/AAC encoder broadcast, use the RTMPS endpoint provided in Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than assuming HLS and RTMPS are interchangeable.
Run FFmpeg in an infinite loop
This illustrative command loops input.mp4 indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV-format stream to YouTube. It is a template, not a tested universal configuration:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv
'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
- Replace
input.mp4with the actual path to your file. - Replace the placeholder endpoint and key with the exact RTMPS URL and key supplied by Live Control Room. Do not leave a real key in shell history or a script that other users can read.
- Adjust the video codec, preset, bitrate, pixel format, GOP, and audio settings to the source, instance capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance for your target output. The example’s
-g 60gives a two-second GOP only at 30 fps; calculate a suitable frame count for other frame rates. - Run the command in a session or service arrangement that you can monitor. Closing a terminal or losing the instance can stop the broadcast unless you have arranged process supervision.
The -stream_loop -1 input option requests an infinite loop and must appear before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg documents this option, real-time input pacing, RTMP protocols, and FLV streaming output in its command-line documentation.
Test, monitor, and handle long broadcasts
Verify the first test before relying on it
- Start with a short test rather than immediately depending on a long broadcast.
- Open the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm picture, audio, motion, and that the stream is reaching the event.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the OCI instance’s outbound bandwidth has the recommended headroom.
- Watch FFmpeg output for connection errors, encoding lag, or file/codec problems. Resolve issues before treating the stream as unattended.
Plan for interruptions and archive limits
A long-running stream needs active monitoring or a recovery plan for both the process and the host. FFmpeg documents FIFO output options that can retry after some temporary network failures; these options may help with particular interruptions, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted playback or replace testing and monitoring.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted archive will be created for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on it for a longer broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for current archive information.
Troubleshooting
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Likely causes: The endpoint or key is wrong, the event is not ready, the channel cannot currently stream, or outbound connectivity is blocked.
- Fix: Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from the correct Live Control Room event, confirm the event is ready to receive an encoder, verify live-streaming eligibility, and check the instance’s network access.
The preview buffers or stream health degrades
- Likely causes: Insufficient upload headroom, unstable connectivity, or an instance that cannot encode fast enough.
- Fix: Compare actual upload capacity against the chosen bitrate with the recommended 20% spare capacity, reduce the target resolution or frame rate if needed, and check encoding load and FFmpeg output.
The stream is the wrong quality or has compatibility errors
- Likely causes: Output settings do not match the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, or keyframe interval, or stream-copy output contains incompatible source media.
- Fix: Inspect the input streams, review the output settings, and match them to YouTube’s current encoder matrix. If using
-g, calculate the frame count for a two-second GOP at your chosen frame rate.
Audio is missing or the loop does not repeat as expected
- Likely causes: The file has no usable audio stream, an incorrect input path, or the loop option is positioned after its input.
- Fix: Confirm the media path and audio stream, then place
-stream_loop -1before the corresponding-i.
The broadcast stops after a host or network interruption
- Likely causes: The FFmpeg process exited, the VM stopped, or the connection could not recover.
- Fix: Check the process and instance state, restart the encoder when appropriate, and consider process supervision or FFmpeg’s documented FIFO recovery options for temporary network failures. Test any recovery setup; it is not a guarantee of continuous playback.
Or let it run in the cloud
If managing an OCI instance and FFmpeg is more work than you want, StreamNeo runs prerecorded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
