If a YouTube live stream running from a Contabo VPS keeps dropping, first check OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter and logs during the failure. Rising network-dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain—but do not, by themselves, prove a Contabo outage. Work through the connection, VPS configuration, firewall, service status and route checks below to locate the fault before changing settings.
1. Check whether the stream is losing frames over the network
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frames figures while streaming. Review the OBS log for the same period if the stream disconnects. Record the time, configured bitrate, whether the network-dropped-frames counter rose, and whether the stream recovered or ended.
The OBS Project explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the streaming computer and the remote ingest server. OBS may drop frames when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection. This identifies a connection symptom, not the particular cause or which organization is responsible. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
- Network-dropped frames rise: investigate whether the VPS can sustain the configured bitrate to the selected YouTube ingest route, then check firewall and route conditions.
- The stream disconnects without a rise in network drops: keep the OBS log and timestamp, and continue checking the VPS and service status. The counter alone cannot explain every disconnection.
2. Confirm the VPS is running and check recent changes
- Sign in to the Contabo customer panel and confirm the VPS is running.
- Note whether the problem began after a change to network settings, firewall rules, the streaming setup or the VPS itself. Review recent changes rather than applying unrelated fixes.
- If you are also having trouble reaching the server, try a different access network. Check whether a local VPN, firewall or corporate network restriction could be affecting your access. This can help separate a management-access issue from a problem with the VPS’s outgoing stream connection; it does not diagnose the egress route on its own.
Contabo’s server-unreachable checklist recommends checking server state and trying another network when investigating access problems.

3. Inspect the VPS network interface and firewall
Check interface and address configuration
If the server is running but its network configuration may have changed, verify that the network interface is up and that its address, subnet and gateway are correct for your operating system and Contabo configuration. If ordinary network access has failed, use Contabo’s documented console or management access method. Avoid copying commands from instructions for a different operating system or network setup.
Check firewall rules in both places
Review both the Contabo product firewall and the guest operating system’s firewall, including rules that may have changed recently. Check traffic direction before changing a rule: Contabo documents that its firewall drops inbound traffic by default when activated, while outbound traffic is unrestricted by default. That default is not evidence that Contabo’s firewall blocks outbound streaming, but guest OS rules or custom provider rules still merit inspection. Contabo’s guide to unstable server connections also identifies network-interface configuration, firewall rules and bandwidth overload among the areas to investigate.
4. Check for a service incident or a routing problem
- Check Contabo’s service status page for an incident affecting your server or data center.
- If there is no listed incident but the symptoms suggest a route problem, capture traceroute or MTR output toward the relevant destination and note the test time. Contabo recommends providing traceroute/MTR results when asking support to investigate suspected routing trouble.
- Send the timestamp and route output to Contabo support if the evidence points to an infrastructure route issue. A status page without an incident does not establish that every route is healthy.
5. Compare streaming destinations as a diagnostic
OBS suggests testing another streaming destination to help narrow down whether the connection problem is specific to one service. If another destination behaves differently, that is useful evidence, but it is not a guaranteed fix and does not conclusively prove that YouTube or Contabo is the cause. What Contabo’s bandwidth figures do—and do not—tell you
Contabo states that VPS, VDS and dedicated servers have no default bandwidth limit, subject to a fair-use policy; it reserves the ability to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive use and says that this is rare. Its published VPS/VDS port-speed range is 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Those are provider statements about service and port specifications—not a measurement of sustained upload from your particular VPS to the selected YouTube ingest route, a guarantee of stream stability, or proof that your configured bitrate is sustainable.
