Yes—a DigitalOcean Droplet can run an encoder or relay that sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live. The right setup depends on whether the server must encode video or only forward an already encoded stream: encoding is CPU-intensive, while relaying has different resource needs. DigitalOcean does not publish a guaranteed minimum Droplet size for this exact use, so start with a test and monitor CPU, memory, network transfer and YouTube stream health before relying on it.
This guide uses DigitalOcean and YouTube’s general documentation. It does not establish India-specific region availability, latency, encoder settings or tax treatment; check the region selector and billing details in your own account. The workflow is the same whether you are streaming devotional music, a radio-style playlist or another video loop, but you must have the necessary rights to the content.
How to stream 24/7 on YouTube using a VPS
The overall path is: prepare a secure Ubuntu server, choose whether it will encode or relay, configure a supported encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key, then test the entire path before leaving it unattended. The steps below describe the setup and decisions without presenting an unverified FFmpeg command or service configuration as tested.
1. Create and secure a Droplet
- Select a current Ubuntu LTS image. DigitalOcean’s production setup guide uses Ubuntu 24.04 as an example. Confirm the image and region choices available in your account when you create the Droplet.
- Add an SSH public key. Use key-based SSH authentication rather than relying on password login for server administration.
- Use a non-root administrator account. Create a user with sudo access, then use that account for routine administration instead of working as root.
- Attach a Cloud Firewall. Permit inbound SSH from the locations you administer from and block other unnecessary inbound services. The stream is sent outward from the Droplet, so do not open inbound ports merely because the server is streaming. Keep the outbound connectivity required for system updates and the encoder’s connection to YouTube.
- Choose monitoring and recovery options. DigitalOcean identifies monitoring as free and recommends considering backups, VPC and IPv6 as part of production setup. Enable backups if you need a recoverable server configuration; a backup is not a substitute for a separate copy of source videos.
DigitalOcean also documents cloud-init user data for automating first-boot tasks such as creating users, installing applications and configuring SSH. Automation can make repeated provisioning consistent, but review any user data before applying it and avoid putting a YouTube stream key in a script or other place where it could be exposed.

2. Decide what work the VPS will do
A server that relays an already encoded feed and one that encodes or transcodes video are different workloads. Encoding continuously can keep CPU busy; relay capacity and bottlenecks depend on the implementation and feed. DigitalOcean describes dedicated CPU Droplets as suitable for steady workloads and CPU-optimized plans as aimed at CPU-bound work, including video and live streaming. Those descriptions are guidance, not a sizing guarantee for your stream.
- For a relay, check that the chosen software and input source can keep a stable connection and forward the stream continuously.
- For encoding or transcoding, test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you plan to use. Watch CPU and memory during the test, not just while the software is idle.
- Compare shared or dedicated CPU, memory, storage, public network throughput and included outbound transfer for the plan. DigitalOcean says non-GPU Droplets generally have a 2 Gbps network throughput maximum, with a higher limit for Premium CPU Droplets; this is a ceiling, not a promise of sustained stream quality.
- Do not pick a plan solely from the words “video” or “live streaming.” Start with a test stream, observe resource use and stream health, and adjust based on measured needs.
3. Estimate continuous outbound transfer
Your stream’s total outgoing bitrate drives transfer consumption. A useful decimal estimate is Mbps × 0.45 × hours = approximate GB, before protocol overhead. For example, a constant 1 Mbps stream running for 24 hours uses about 10.8 GB of outbound data by this arithmetic. If video and audio are encoded separately, use their combined bitrate; if you send a primary and backup stream, include both.
DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation states that inbound transfer is free, included outbound transfer is pooled across the team, and additional outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB beyond the included allowance. That additional-transfer figure was last verified on 25 August 2026. Check the allowance for the Droplet plan you select and your team’s pooled usage, then watch projected transfer in billing. A high bitrate can make transfer costs material even when the video is otherwise stable.
4. Enable YouTube Live and obtain stream credentials
- Confirm that YouTube Live is enabled for the channel before scheduling a long run. YouTube’s stated eligibility requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer aged at least 16.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Enter those values in the encoder running on or feeding the VPS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script repository, or paste it into support messages that do not need it.
- Start with the encoder sending to YouTube, then check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or leaving it unattended.
5. Configure the encoder for the chosen output
Use YouTube’s published settings for the codec and resolution you actually select; bitrate recommendations are not interchangeable across codecs or modes. For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:

These are YouTube’s H.264 figures in its encoder settings guidance, accessed 3 October 2026; they are not values for AV1 or H.265. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted extension of RTMP. If your encoder exposes a “keyframe interval” or “GOP” setting, configure it to meet that two-second target for the selected frame rate.
Leave bandwidth headroom rather than matching the stream bitrate exactly to the available network. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup bitrate. This is especially important if other traffic shares the VPS connection. Test the stream at the chosen output settings and check both the encoder’s status and YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
6. Make unattended operation recoverable
For a 24/7 stream, process supervision and reconnect behavior are implementation decisions, not configurations validated by DigitalOcean or YouTube’s cited setup pages. Whichever encoder or relay you choose, arrange for it to restart after an unexpected process exit and determine how it reconnects if the input, VPS network or YouTube ingestion connection drops.
- Monitor the encoder or relay process, CPU, memory and outbound transfer.
- Check YouTube stream health rather than assuming a running process means a healthy broadcast.
- Test an encoder restart, a network interruption and a server reboot before depending on unattended operation.
- If recording locally on the Droplet, confirm that the archive file continues to grow and that available storage will not fill. Plan where recordings will be copied and how they will be retained.
Do not treat a one-time successful preview as proof of 24/7 reliability. Run a test long enough to expose the failure modes you care about, and verify the recovery behavior instead of assuming it.

7. Decide how to handle archives and content rights
A 24/7 broadcast and a complete replay archive are separate requirements. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. If the replay matters, consider shorter sessions or a separate recording workflow, and test the archive behavior for your channel.
Technical ability to send a video does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. Live-stream acceptance and monetization eligibility are not the same question; do not assume that looping content will qualify for monetization simply because the stream is online.

A test with the actual feed and settings is the practical way to assess capacity.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
It depends on the combined bitrate and how many hours the stream runs. The estimate below uses decimal gigabytes and excludes protocol overhead:

The figures are arithmetic using Mbps × 0.45 × hours, not a DigitalOcean usage measurement. Include audio in the total bitrate, account for any parallel backup stream, and compare the result with the Droplet’s included outbound transfer and team pool. Additional outbound transfer beyond the allowance is priced at $0.01 per GiB in DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation, last verified 25 August 2026; decimal GB estimates and binary GiB billing units are not identical.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube to save a complete 24-hour archive. YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The wording is a caveat, not an assurance for streams under 12 hours. If a public replay or retained recording is important, split the broadcast into shorter sessions or arrange a separate recording and storage workflow, then test it.
