Do not choose Sign out, restart the VM, or stop/deallocate it: those actions end the session or stop the operating system that is running OBS.
Disconnecting RDP is not the same as signing out
Closing your Remote Desktop window ordinarily disconnects your local client while leaving the Windows session on the VM available to reconnect. Keep the same account signed in and reconnect to that session when you want to check OBS. Microsoft documents that disconnected remote sessions can be reconnected, but session behavior depends on the connection type, authentication, and policy (Microsoft: Configure the session lock behavior for Azure Virtual Desktop).

Keep OBS running while you disconnect
- Start OBS and verify the broadcast. While connected to the VM, check that the intended scene is active and that OBS reports the stream as connected.
- Disconnect the client without signing out. Close the RDP window or use the client’s disconnect action. Do not select Sign out in Windows or an option that signs you out.
- Leave the Azure VM running. Disconnecting your desktop client is not a VM power-management action. OBS needs the VM’s operating system to remain on.
- Reconnect to the same VM and account. Check whether the same Windows session and OBS instance are still present. If not, identify whether the VM restarted, the session ended, or OBS itself exited before changing settings.
Check the connection type and session policies
“Azure VM” can mean a conventional virtual machine accessed with RDP, Azure Virtual Desktop, or a Remote PC connection using Microsoft Entra authentication. These paths can have different session-lock defaults and administrator-managed time limits. Microsoft documents differences between Microsoft Entra single sign-on and legacy authentication for Remote PC connections (Microsoft: Connect to a Remote PC with Single Sign-On Using Microsoft Entra Authentication), while Azure Virtual Desktop session behavior may be configured through Group Policy or Intune. Policy changes may require a session-host restart (Microsoft: Configure the session lock behavior for Azure Virtual Desktop).
- If the session locks, disconnects immediately, or is unavailable when you return, determine which connection type you use and ask the host administrator to check the applicable session-lock and time-limit policies.
- Do not change organization-managed policies without the administrator responsible for the host.
- Automatic RDP reconnection controls whether your local client retries a dropped remote connection; it does not keep OBS alive or guarantee that the broadcast stayed healthy (Microsoft: Supported RDP properties).
If OBS is open but the stream has dropped
A live OBS window does not prove that YouTube is still receiving a healthy stream. If the OBS process remains open but the broadcast disconnects or drops frames, troubleshoot the network path separately. OBS identifies an unstable or insufficient connection to the ingest server, bitrate limits, VPN interference, and security software as possible causes (OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

- Check OBS’s stream status and log for connection errors rather than assuming the RDP disconnect caused the failure.
- Check whether the VM’s network path, VPN, firewall, or security software is interrupting access to the streaming ingest server.
- Review the configured bitrate against the connection available to the VM and the streaming service’s limits.
- If OBS uses an audio or display device created by the remote desktop session, check whether disconnecting changes or removes that source. Which devices OBS depends on varies by setup.
For Azure RDP connection problems, use Microsoft’s Azure RDP troubleshooting guidance; a client connection problem and an OBS-to-ingest problem may need different fixes.
What OBS launch options can—and cannot—do
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter to start streaming when OBS launches and --minimize-to-tray to start minimized (OBS: Launch Parameters). These options can help with a planned OBS launch flow, but they do not preserve a signed-out Windows session, prevent an Azure VM from stopping, or guarantee recovery after a network failure.
