Start the encoder or relay on your Linode inside a detached tmux session before closing SSH. The SSH client can disconnect while the server-side process keeps running. Reconnect later with tmux attach. If the process must start after a Linode reboot, configure it as a systemd service enabled at boot; tmux alone does not provide reboot recovery.
First, identify what is actually running on the Linode
This solution applies when the encoder or relay process itself runs on your Linode. If encoding runs on your own computer and that computer sends the stream, detaching an SSH session on Linode will not keep the computer-side encoder running.
There are three separate parts to consider:
- SSH and your shell: the connection you use to administer the Linode.
- The encoder or relay: the process that sends media from the server.
- YouTube ingest and broadcast: YouTube’s receipt of that media and the state of the live broadcast.
A detached tmux session protects the process from the SSH client disconnecting. It does not keep a process alive through a host reboot, fix an unstable outbound connection, or guarantee YouTube continues receiving the stream.
Keep the process alive when SSH disconnects
- Connect to the Linode over SSH. Start
tmux, or identify the existing session if the encoder or relay is already running in one. Linode also documentsscreen; if the process is already in a persistent session manager, use that session rather than starting a duplicate. - Run the encoder or relay inside the session. If it is already running in an ordinary shell, do not assume it can be moved into
tmuxjust by detaching. Start it in atmuxsession, or use an established session where it is already running. - Confirm the process and YouTube stream are working. Check that the process is still running and that YouTube is receiving the stream before disconnecting.
- Detach from
tmux. Press Ctrl+B, then press D. This detaches your terminal while leaving the session on the Linode. - Close SSH. The detached session can continue on the server after your SSH client disconnects.
- Check the session later. SSH back into the Linode and run
tmux attachto reattach to the session.
Detaching is not the same as stopping the encoder: avoid ending the process or shutting down the Linode if you want the stream to continue.

Choose tmux or systemd for the failure you need to cover

Use tmux when your immediate problem is losing the SSH connection and you want to return to the running terminal. Configure a systemd service enabled at boot when the workload should start after a reboot. A service can provide a place to configure restart behavior, but that is separate from the basic boot-start setup and does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings separately
A live process can remain running while YouTube stops receiving usable media. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the encoder with the RTMPS stream URL and stream key. Treat the stream key as a publishing credential: do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, or shared configuration.

If the stream does not reach YouTube, inspect the encoder or relay logs and confirm that the RTMPS URL and stream key are correct. Then check outbound network health and whether the configured bitrate can be sustained. Detaching from SSH cannot correct a bad key, a connection failure, or a bitrate that exceeds the available connection.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops or degrades
- The stream stops when SSH closes: the encoder may have been started in the SSH shell rather than inside a persistent session. Start it inside
tmuxand verify YouTube is receiving the stream before detaching. - You cannot find the running session: reconnect over SSH and use the session manager in which the process was started. If it was started in
screen, for example, look for it there rather than assuming it is intmux. - The process is gone after a reboot: a detached terminal session is not reboot recovery. Configure and enable a
systemdservice for startup at boot, then check both that the service starts and that the stream reaches YouTube. - The process is running but YouTube shows no incoming media: review the encoder or relay logs, outbound connectivity, RTMPS URL, and stream key. Check the stream in Live Control Room rather than treating a running process as proof that the broadcast is healthy.
- OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator: OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes. Check connection stability and reduce the streaming bitrate if the link cannot sustain it.
- OBS disconnects from a relay: Linode’s RTMP guidance warns that an excessive streaming rate can cause OBS to disconnect from the server. Check the configured rate and the relay’s connection before assuming the SSH session caused the interruption.
When a separate RTMP relay makes sense
A self-managed RTMP relay is a different architecture: it receives a stream and pushes it onward to YouTube. Linode’s RTMP guide describes that approach, but it adds configuration and operational responsibility. You do not need to build a relay merely to keep an existing server-side process alive after SSH disconnects; use tmux for that narrower problem.
