Short answer: A Contabo VPS may work for a modest 24/7 YouTube stream, but Contabo’s published 99.9% availability figure covers physical connectivity—not uninterrupted streaming—and does not establish how a particular server will perform. You need to test the exact VPS, encoder settings, and stream workload before relying on it.
What Contabo’s 99.9% figure does—and does not—mean
Contabo’s Terms & Conditions state that physical connectivity for VPS and certain other services will be available at an annual average rate of 99.9%. The terms exclude interruptions caused by matters outside Contabo’s control and necessary maintenance after timely notice. That is a contractual figure for physical connectivity, not a measured uptime result for your individual VPS or a guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will stay live. A YouTube stream depends on more than the host’s network connection: the encoder must keep up, the VPS must sustain a path to YouTube’s ingest servers, and YouTube must receive and process the stream. Contabo’s connectivity commitment does not establish those other parts of the chain.
What can affect a 24/7 stream on a Contabo VPS?
Shared vCPU performance
Contabo’s VPS documentation says vCPU resources are shared at the hypervisor level. Plan specifications such as vCPU count and memory are not an encoder benchmark, so they cannot show whether a specific configuration can encode your resolution, frame rate, overlays, and source material without dropped frames. Actual outbound throughput
Contabo says bandwidth is delivered according to data-center technical capacity and other customers’ performance obligations. Unless separately agreed, it does not guarantee the actual bandwidth available to an individual server. Traffic and fair use
Contabo says it does not apply a default bandwidth cap to VPS, VDS, or dedicated servers, but reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage under its fair usage policy. It says customers exceeding the policy will be notified and Contabo will work with them on a suitable solution. Encoder recovery and monitoring
A VPS specification does not, by itself, establish that an encoder will automatically restart, reconnect to YouTube, or alert you after a failure. Treat restart supervision, alerting, and a backup encoder or ingest plan as operational measures you must arrange and verify—not as capabilities established by the cited Contabo plan details.
Estimate the traffic before choosing a plan
YouTube recommends a 6–17 Mbps H.264 bitrate range for 1080p60. At a constant bitrate, that works out to approximately 1.94–5.51 TB of outbound data over 30 days, before protocol overhead. These are calculations from YouTube’s bitrate range, not a published usage statistic. Your actual traffic depends on the bitrate you configure and whether the stream runs continuously. Use your intended encoder bitrate for a more relevant estimate: each 1 Mbps of continuous stream bitrate sends about 0.324 TB over 30 days before overhead. Confirm that the selected VPS plan’s traffic terms and fair-use policy suit that workload; do not assume that “no default bandwidth cap” means every usage pattern is exempt from fair use.
How to test whether your VPS is suitable
- Choose the actual plan and location you plan to use. Review its current vCPU, RAM, port speed, storage, and traffic terms in Contabo’s VPS documentation. Do not treat published specifications as proof of sustained encoding or upload performance.
- Configure the encoder for the real broadcast. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, motion, and overlays you intend to use. - Keep the test running long enough to expose intermittent problems. A short successful connection does not prove that the VPS can hold the intended workload continuously. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the VPS’s CPU and network metrics for dropped frames, bitrate instability, disconnects, or resource pressure.
- Test the failure path. Confirm how your encoder is restarted and how it reconnects after a dropped connection. Set up an alert you will notice, and decide what you will do if the VPS or YouTube ingest path fails. These are precautions to implement and test yourself.
- Repeat after material changes. Re-test if you change resolution, frame rate, bitrate, overlays, encoder, VPS plan, or server location. A result for one configuration does not establish performance for another.
When a VPS may—or may not—be the right choice

A continuously available stream is not automatically permitted content. Make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material you broadcast. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether your VPS can encode and deliver the stream.
