Yes—provided the streaming encoder keeps running independently of your SSH session. Closing SSH disconnects your management connection; it does not automatically stop a process running in a persistent terminal session or under a service manager. If the encoder is attached to the SSH terminal, however, logging out can stop it.
What closing SSH does—and does not do
SSH is the remote connection you use to manage a Linux-based DigitalOcean Droplet. The encoder running on the Droplet sends the stream to YouTube; SSH is not the stream itself. DigitalOcean’s OpenSSH connection guide explains how the management connection works.
The outcome depends on how you launched the encoder. A command running in the SSH foreground is tied to that terminal and may end when the session closes. A command running inside a persistent session such as tmux, or as a system service, can continue after you disconnect. This is a process-lifetime distinction, not a guarantee that a stream will remain uninterrupted.
Keep an encoder running after you log out
Option 1: Run it in tmux for interactive use

Start your streaming encoder inside that session, using the stream destination and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

Detach from tmux using its detach command or key sequence. Detaching leaves the session running while you close SSH.

Reconnect to the Droplet and reattach to the tmux session when you need to inspect the encoder or its output.

DigitalOcean’s Recovery ISO guide mentions tmux, screen, and byobu for maintaining a long-running recovery session. That is support for using persistent terminal sessions, not a ready-made YouTube streaming recipe; adapt the steps to your Linux distribution and encoder.

A service manager is a better fit when you want the encoder to start at boot and be inspectable or restartable through the operating system. DigitalOcean’s production Droplet setup guidance discusses startup scripts, but does not provide a prebuilt YouTube encoder service unit. Create and validate a service configuration for your chosen encoder rather than copying a generic, unverified one.
Point the encoder at YouTube safely

Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the current stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.

Configure the encoder with those values and the protocol it supports. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe obtaining the RTMPS URL and key and configuring an encoder. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL.

Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, article, or exposed log; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Start the encoder, then check the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. A configured ingest URL alone does not show that YouTube has accepted the stream or that the broadcast is live.

If you use HLS instead of RTMPS
Use HLS only if your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS workflow, and follow the encoder’s protocol-specific settings alongside YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP, so choose it for a compatible workflow rather than assuming the protocols are interchangeable.

Keeping a process alive after logout solves only the SSH-disconnect problem. The encoder can still crash, lose access to its media, exhaust the Droplet’s resources, or be interrupted by a Droplet reboot or a network or YouTube ingest failure. Required Droplet capacity depends on the media, codec, resolution, and encoder; there is no universal minimum established for every streaming workload.
- Encoder exits when SSH closes: it was likely attached to the SSH terminal. Start it inside tmux or configure a validated system service.
- Encoder remains active but YouTube is not live: inspect the encoder output and Live Control Room status. Confirm the current ingest URL and stream key, and check for an ingest or network error.
- Stream stops after a reboot: a detached tmux session does not itself restart the encoder at boot. Configure and test a service or startup procedure if reboot recovery is required.
- Stream fails under load: check encoder and Droplet resource use, then size the host for the actual media and encoding workload. Do not assume a Droplet configuration will suit every resolution or codec.
