There is no evidence-based universal “best” Linux VPS for a 24/7 YouTube stream: provider pages do not establish comparative uptime or packet-loss performance. Choose by what the server must do, sustained CPU access, monthly outbound transfer, network throughput, and region—then test the actual stream before relying on it.
If you want a cloud service rather than managing a VPS, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it keeps uploaded videos live on YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with a free first day.
Which Linux VPS options are worth comparing?
DigitalOcean and OVHcloud are useful examples to evaluate, not a ranked shortlist. Their official product information describes relevant plan characteristics, but does not establish which provider is cheapest, most reliable, or best for every region and workload. Verify current plans and terms for your location before buying.
| Option | What the official information establishes | What to verify for your stream |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Linux-based virtual machines with shared-CPU and dedicated-CPU plan types. Its documentation identifies video and live-stream encoding among CPU-optimized workload examples. Transfer is plan-specific, pooled at team level, and additional outbound transfer is billed under its documented policy. | Current region and plan, included outbound transfer, overage rules, sustained CPU access, and whether throughput suits the feed. See Bandwidth Billing and Choosing the Right CPU Droplet Plan. |
| OVHcloud VPS | Plan pages describe Linux installation options, resources, backup features, traffic allowances, and public bandwidth figures. | Current plan and region, traffic allowance, stated bandwidth ceiling, Linux image availability, and recovery options. A published bandwidth ceiling is not an end-to-end stream guarantee. |
These are comparison examples, not provider recommendations. No controlled provider-to-provider 24/7 YouTube uptime, packet-loss, or interruption comparison is established by the cited pages.

What should you check before choosing a VPS?
1. Decide whether the VPS encodes or only relays
Encoding video continuously is a CPU-intensive job; forwarding an already encoded stream has a different workload. DigitalOcean distinguishes shared CPU from dedicated CPU and describes CPU-optimized Droplets for sustained CPU-bound work, including video streaming and encoding. Do not choose a minimum size based on a generic rule: the right plan depends on your specific workload. If you encode on the VPS, prioritize sustained CPU capacity; if it only relays, measure the real relay workload before sizing.
2. Calculate outbound data for the whole month
A stream’s approximate data volume is bitrate multiplied by runtime, divided by eight to convert bits to bytes. Using decimal units, each continuously streamed 1 Mbps over 30 days is about 324 GB. YouTube’s current guidance retrieved in 2026 recommends H.264 video bitrates of 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. At 12 Mbps continuously for 30 days, the stream alone uses about 3,888 GB (3.9 TB), before protocol overhead or other traffic.

Compare your estimate with the specific plan’s included outbound transfer, aggregation rules, and overage charges. DigitalOcean’s documentation, last verified 14 September 2026, says Droplets include plan-specific outbound transfer, pooled across a team, with additional outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB; inbound Droplet transfer is free. Count all relevant public-interface traffic and confirm the current billing terms.
3. Check throughput separately from the traffic allowance
A large monthly allowance does not prove that a server can sustain the required port speed. DigitalOcean says Premium CPU-Optimized Droplets can provide up to 10 Gbps network throughput; OVHcloud lists public bandwidth ceilings by plan. Compare the selected plan’s stated throughput with your sustained stream bitrate and leave operating headroom. Advertised maximums do not guarantee end-to-end delivery to YouTube.

4. Choose a region and recovery setup deliberately
Confirm the provider offers the Linux distribution and configuration you need in the intended region. Review its current backup and recovery controls, then consider how you will restore the stream if the instance or process fails. Region-specific plans and network paths vary; neither cited provider page establishes a universal best location for YouTube ingest.
How do you configure the stream for YouTube?
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the stream key from YouTube Studio as a secret: enter it only in your trusted encoder or relay configuration and do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs.

- Set up the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Use the ingest protocol supported by your chosen encoder or relay; prefer RTMPS where available.
- Configure the encoder or relay. Select a codec YouTube accepts, set a constant bitrate, and use a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Select resolution and frame rate for your source and available upload capacity. For H.264 reference points, YouTube’s current guidance retrieved in 2026 lists 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p60; these are recommendations, not a universal bitrate requirement.
- Start a representative test. Include the audio and motion expected in the real program. YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting the live stream; check the Studio stream-health messages rather than assuming that a process running on the VPS means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Monitor after launch. Watch YouTube’s stream health and the VPS process, CPU, network, and outbound-transfer consumption. Check the feed from a viewer perspective as well. Keep an eye on provider limits and billing as the stream runs.
YouTube also offers HLS ingestion, but it has different constraints: TS segments must be 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments, requests use HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not supported. HLS latency is higher than RTMP because video is sent in segments. Use HLS only if its codec or workflow advantages justify these requirements and the latency trade-off. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and HLS setup instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can go wrong with a 24/7 VPS stream?
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream drops or repeatedly reconnects | Network interruption, encoder/relay process failure, or a resource limit. | Check process logs and provider network metrics, confirm the ingest endpoint and key, and review YouTube stream-health messages. Test restart and recovery behavior rather than assuming the VPS will resume automatically. |
| Video stutters or YouTube reports poor health | Insufficient sustained throughput, unstable network path, or an inappropriate bitrate/encoder configuration. | Check actual outgoing throughput and stream-health messages; reduce bitrate or resolution if the source cannot sustain the chosen rate. Retest with representative audio and motion. |
| CPU remains high or encoding falls behind | The VPS is encoding or otherwise processing more than its CPU plan can sustain. | Identify whether the host is encoding or merely relaying, inspect CPU use under representative load, and reassess sustained CPU capacity before resizing. |
| Unexpected transfer charges or depleted allowance | Continuous egress exceeds the plan allowance, or other traffic is counted. | Recalculate monthly volume from bitrate and runtime, include other public traffic, and verify the current plan’s pooling and overage policy. |
| Connection works but latency is higher than expected | HLS segment-based delivery or another workflow choice. | Confirm the ingest protocol. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP; use it only when its workflow advantages warrant that trade-off. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube rather than administer a Linux server, StreamNeo avoids leaving a computer or home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera.
