Yes. A DigitalOcean Droplet can host the continuously running process that plays or relays video, while YouTube Live receives the output from an encoder configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For a prerecorded video loop, FFmpeg can send a prepared file repeatedly; you do not need Nginx-RTMP just to publish FFmpeg output directly to YouTube.
The setup has two independent parts: YouTube must accept the live stream, and your Droplet must keep producing and sending it. The DigitalOcean examples explain useful components, but they are not a complete, validated recipe for unattended 24/7 operation.
How the 24/7 setup fits together
A Droplet is the always-on host; it does not itself create a stream. A media process on it must generate or relay video continuously. An encoder then sends that output to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
For a prerecorded loop, the source is a media file read by FFmpeg. For a live camera or desktop production, the source and capture workflow are different: OBS is a desktop application commonly used to capture and produce a live stream. DigitalOcean’s Nginx-RTMP tutorial demonstrates OBS sending to a self-hosted RTMP server, not an end-to-end OBS-to-YouTube configuration.

Check YouTube eligibility before renting a server
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key provided for that stream.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel; do not put it in public logs, screenshots, or shared scripts.
YouTube’s encoder page explains the destination details and lists software encoders such as OBS. Menu labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
Choose a server-side approach
FFmpeg for a straightforward prerecorded loop
DigitalOcean’s Ubuntu 22.04 Nginx-RTMP tutorial shows FFmpeg sending a prepared media file and describes -stream_loop -1 for repeating it indefinitely. For direct publishing, FFmpeg can send to YouTube’s RTMP destination using the server URL and stream key; Nginx-RTMP is an optional intermediary, not a requirement. The tutorial is useful for understanding the components, but its example is not a full production guide for unattended YouTube streaming: DigitalOcean’s Nginx-RTMP tutorial.

Before leaving a file in a loop, check that it plays correctly from beginning to end, has a suitable format for your encoder path, and is content you have the rights to stream. A looping file is not the same as a live camera feed.

OBS is a fit when you need a graphical production workflow or are capturing from a workstation. DigitalOcean’s tutorial shows OBS configured as a custom RTMP destination for its own Nginx-RTMP server. That arrangement adds a server layer and does not establish that the OBS example is already pointed at YouTube. For a server-hosted continuous prerecorded loop, FFmpeg avoids depending on a desktop GUI session.
SRS when you need a media-server layer
DigitalOcean offers an SRS Marketplace image and documents support for RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, authentication, restreaming, recording, virtual streams, and FFmpeg transcoding. This may suit workflows that need those media-server functions rather than a simple file-to-YouTube pipeline. Those are documented capabilities, not a performance guarantee. Configure the YouTube destination
Whichever server-side pipeline you choose, its publishing encoder needs YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s destination settings, not as a public URL on a website or in a support post. If you use an RTMP media server as an intermediary, distinguish the two connections: the source encoder sends to your server, and the server-side publisher sends onward to YouTube.
Do not assume that any particular bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or Droplet size is right for every stream. The cited DigitalOcean and YouTube material does not establish a universal configuration for these values. Choose encoder settings based on your media, codec, resolution, available server resources, and YouTube’s current guidance; avoid adding a transcoding step unless you need it.
Keep a continuous stream maintainable
Running the command once is not the same as operating it 24/7. A continuous service needs a way to start after reboot, detect and recover from process failure, retain useful logs, and alert someone when the stream is no longer healthy. The cited setup pages do not supply a complete current systemd unit, alerting plan, key-rotation procedure, reconnect policy, or failure-recovery configuration. Treat those as deployment work to design and validate for your own environment, rather than assuming the tutorial alone makes a process unattended.

Also plan for the ongoing cost of a rented Droplet. No current Droplet price, bandwidth allowance, or workload-specific sizing is established by the cited pages. Do not select a plan from a resolution label alone: resource needs depend on bitrate, codec, whether you transcode, region, and concurrent streams. DigitalOcean’s SRS documentation uses a 4 GB Droplet in an API creation example; that is an example, not a recommendation for every workload.
Follow YouTube’s rules and stream limits
Continuous playback does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube policy. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube can restrict live streaming. Use material you have permission to broadcast, including music and other embedded content; a video being prerecorded does not make it exempt from copyright rules. Check YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for current requirements and limits. The current guidance states a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; confirm the page before relying on those limits for a multi-stream setup.
