YouTube Studio manages the live event, but it does not send a video file as the live feed. To play a prerecorded video as a YouTube livestream, create or schedule the event in Studio, connect an encoder such as OBS with the event’s stream URL and key, and use the encoder to play and send the video. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.

Before you start

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube’s Help page also says creators must be at least 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s current eligibility requirements if you cannot access live streaming.
  • Install encoder software on a computer that can play the video file. YouTube lists OBS as an open-source, no-charge encoder. The exact controls for adding a local media file depend on the encoder you choose.
  • Have a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate.
  • Confirm that you have the rights to stream the video and all included audio, including music. Prerecorded content remains subject to YouTube’s livestream terms and policies.

Create or schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
  2. To schedule an event, open Manage → Schedule stream, then create a new stream or reuse prior settings. Set the event details and audience options in Studio.
  3. Open the stream’s settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, paste the URL into the server or URL field and the key into the stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder to start streaming. Studio’s role is to configure and manage the event; the encoder sends the video feed.

Load and send the prerecorded video

  1. In your encoder, add the video file as a media or playback source. Encoder controls vary, so consult the software’s own instructions for the exact source type and playback options.
  2. Check that the file plays with both picture and sound in the encoder preview. Set the encoder to send its output to YouTube using the stream URL and key you copied from Studio.
  3. Start the encoder’s stream output. The video is now being sent to YouTube, but a scheduled event may not be public yet.
  4. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check the picture and listen to the audio; when the preview is ready, click Go live.
  5. When finished, end the event in Studio and stop the encoder’s output. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Keep a separate local recording if you need a backup or an archive you control.

Check the stream before viewers arrive

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up at least two hours before the event, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it begins, and checking the preview while monitoring audio and video. Leave the recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; if other devices or applications use the connection, account for their traffic as well. YouTube also recommends keeping a local recording or archive backup.

  • Watch the Studio preview for unexpected framing, black frames, or playback interruptions.
  • Listen for missing, distorted, or out-of-sync audio before making the event public.
  • Confirm the video is the intended file and that it continues playing as expected.
  • Keep the stream key private, including in screenshots or screen recordings.

A trailer is not the livestream video

YouTube’s scheduled-stream trailer is an optional clip that plays on the watch page before the scheduled livestream begins. It does not send the main video as the live feed; an encoder is still needed for that. YouTube’s Help page says trailers are available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. A trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes and should match the main video’s aspect ratio and resolution. Eligibility and interface details may change.

Copyright and policy still apply

A prerecorded video is still live content for this purpose. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights to exploit the live content worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable law. The terms also require compliance with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Copyright matches to another copyrighted live broadcast, Community Guidelines violations, or other policy issues can lead to restrictions. Do not assume that owning a video file, or having permission to upload a recording, automatically covers every music or other right needed for a livestream.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to check
No incoming preview in Studio The encoder is not sending to the correct event, or it has not started sending. Check that the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the event’s stream settings. Keep the key private.
Preview appears, but the scheduled event has not started The feed is reaching Studio, but the event has not been started there. Check the preview and audio, then click Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
Video plays in the encoder but not on YouTube The media source may be playing locally without being included in the encoder’s outgoing feed, or the encoder may not be sending. Confirm the file is an active source in the output scene, then verify that the encoder is sending to the correct Studio event.
Upload is unstable or the feed drops The connection may not have sufficient upload capacity for the total bitrate, including competing network use. Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Recheck the preview before going live.
Video or audio is missing in the preview The source may not be included or may not be playing correctly. Check picture and sound in the encoder, then confirm both reach the Studio preview before starting the event.
Live access or the event is restricted The channel may not meet current eligibility requirements, or content may trigger policy or copyright enforcement. Review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility, Community Guidelines, copyright notices, and livestream terms.
