YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats videos for someone watching; it does not broadcast them as a live stream. To keep prerecorded videos playing on your channel as a 24/7 YouTube Live broadcast, send them to YouTube through a streaming encoder or a cloud playout service. The steps below explain the DIY encoder setup and the practical limits to check first.

What “loop a YouTube playlist” does—and does not do

When you select Loop on a YouTube playlist, YouTube repeats playback for the viewer. It does not turn those videos into a live broadcast, create a Live Control Room event, or keep your channel live for other viewers.

For a 24/7 broadcast, a separate system must play the prerecorded videos and send the resulting video and audio feed to YouTube Live. That system can be encoder software running on your computer, dedicated encoder hardware, or a cloud-based playout service. A YouTube playlist URL by itself is not a continuous live-stream source.

Check channel eligibility and content before setup

Confirm livestream access

Your channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current Help guidance says streamers must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable Live access before you plan to start. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup guidance for current requirements and steps.

Confirm you have rights to everything in the playlist

Livestreams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check that you have the rights needed to broadcast every video, image, and audio track in the playlist; the fact that a video is available on YouTube does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube can assess a playlist as a collection as well as individual items. Review its Community Guidelines and applicable copyright requirements before streaming.

DIY method: send prerecorded video to YouTube Live with an encoder

This method assumes your encoder can play or receive the prerecorded videos and keep sending a continuous feed. YouTube provides the destination and stream key; the encoder provides playback and transmission. Labels can vary by encoder, but the YouTube-side workflow is the same.

  1. Prepare the playlist in your encoder. Add the local video files or other supported inputs, set the order, and configure repeat or looping in the encoder’s playout controls. Confirm that the encoder can keep the playlist running unattended. Do not rely on YouTube’s viewer-side playlist Loop control for this step.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose to create or open a stream, then select the encoder streaming option. If this is your first livestream, allow for YouTube’s possible activation delay of up to 24 hours.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the stream setup, copy both values from Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Paste the stream URL and key into the corresponding destination or server fields in your encoder.
  4. Set up the encoder’s output. Choose a resolution and frame rate that match your source and available upload capacity. Use the encoder’s recommended YouTube-compatible output settings if available; YouTube’s official encoder guide explains the connection workflow. Avoid selecting a higher output than your source can sensibly support.
  5. Start sending the feed, then check the preview. Start the encoder output and wait for the stream to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, playlist order, and whether the loop proceeds as expected before you make the broadcast public.
  6. Go live and monitor it. Use Live Control Room to start the broadcast when the preview is correct. Keep an eye on the stream and the encoder’s connection status. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview and archive, confirming accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality; leave upload-bandwidth headroom rather than allocating all available capacity to the stream.

Choose the operating setup that matches your needs

  • Software encoder: Suitable when you want to run playback and streaming on a computer you manage. The computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for an unattended broadcast.
  • Hardware encoder: A dedicated option for a fixed or higher-production setup. It is not required; YouTube also supports software encoders.
  • Cloud playout: A hosted service can play uploaded prerecorded material and send it to YouTube without depending on a home computer staying on. YouTube’s encoder documentation identifies cloud-based 24/7 streaming tools, including Gyre as an example. Check any provider’s current features, terms, and recovery behavior before choosing; YouTube’s documentation does not establish feature parity between services.

Plan for the archive and DVR limits of a continuous stream

A single 24/7 broadcast creates trade-offs beyond keeping the feed online. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for very long streams. These are YouTube Help qualifications, not a guarantee that a particular broadcast will be archived or fully rewindable. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance before deciding whether to leave one stream running indefinitely.

If retaining a complete copy matters, keep a separate local recording where your setup allows it, and verify that the recording is actually being saved. An archive on YouTube should not be your only backup for a stream longer than the stated threshold.

Troubleshoot common problems

The stream does not appear in Live Control Room

  • Possible cause: Live access is not enabled yet, the encoder is not sending, or the stream URL or key was entered incorrectly.
  • What to do: Confirm eligibility and activation, check that the encoder is actively sending, and copy the current URL and key again from the correct stream setup. Treat the key as private.

The feed starts but stops or drops repeatedly

  • Possible cause: The computer or encoder has stopped, or the upload connection cannot sustain the feed.
  • What to do: Check encoder and network status, reduce the output load if needed, and leave bandwidth headroom. Test the setup for a sustained period before relying on it unattended.

Video plays, but the playlist does not advance or repeat

  • Possible cause: Looping was enabled in viewer playback rather than in the encoder’s playout system, or the encoder playlist is not configured to repeat.
  • What to do: Verify the playlist order and repeat controls in the system actually feeding the encoder, then watch a full transition during a test.

Viewers cannot rewind or find a full archive afterward

  • Possible cause: The broadcast ran longer than YouTube’s documented archive or DVR thresholds.
  • What to do: Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour caveats and keep a separate recording if a complete copy is important.

The stream is blocked, restricted, or interrupted over content

  • Possible cause: A video, audio track, or the playlist as a whole may not comply with YouTube’s policies or rights requirements.
  • What to do: Review the affected content and your rights to broadcast it, then consult YouTube’s policy notices and guidance. Do not assume that looping or using an encoder changes the rules.
