Install FFmpeg from Ubuntu’s APT repositories, confirm which version your Ubuntu release provides, then connect it to YouTube Live Control Room with the server URL and stream key. Installation alone does not configure a stream: you still need a suitable input, encoder settings, a stable upload connection and a test before going live.
Check your Ubuntu release before installing
Ubuntu packages FFmpeg in its repositories, but the version depends on the Ubuntu release. Ubuntu’s package index listed FFmpeg 4.4.2 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy) and 6.1.1 for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) in records reviewed on October 3, 2026. Those figures apply to those releases and records; they should not be assumed for every Ubuntu release or derivative. See Ubuntu’s package index for the package record matching your system.
To identify your release, run lsb_release -a. If that command is unavailable, inspect /etc/os-release. Check the matching package record if the exact FFmpeg version matters to you.
Install FFmpeg with APT
Ubuntu recommends APT for package installation. Refresh its local package index, install the repository package, and inspect the installed binary:

sudo apt updaterefreshes the package index.sudo apt install ffmpeginstalls FFmpeg from the configured Ubuntu repositories.ffmpeg -versionprints the installed version and build information.
This is the normal repository-based installation route. The commands are not a guarantee that every Ubuntu release or repository configuration will offer the same version.
If APT cannot find the package
First confirm the release and review the enabled software repositories. FFmpeg is listed in Ubuntu’s Universe repository, so check whether that component is enabled for your release. Then refresh APT and try the install again. Avoid switching immediately to an arbitrary PPA or downloaded binary; the official package records establish a repository route for the LTS releases cited above, while other release-specific failures need checking against that release’s metadata.
Get the YouTube Live stream details
Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, then open Live Control Room and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The workflow can differ depending on whether the channel has streamed before. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your live event.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL. Live Control Room may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; choose or copy the RTMPS URL there if available, rather than assuming an endpoint from an example. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, not its separate video-upload recommendations. The current guidance accessed in 2026 covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. Codec and format affect the recommended bitrate.

These are YouTube’s published live-encoder recommendations accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that your computer or internet connection can sustain them. YouTube also recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Select a target your upload connection can reliably maintain and test it before the event.

- Codec and protocol: confirm that your installed FFmpeg build and the chosen ingest protocol support the combination. Prefer RTMPS when supported.
- Bitrate and stability: use the recommendation for your codec and format as a reference, then test against your sustained upload capacity.
- Source: a file, camera or external HDMI source each needs a suitable input path. A capture card is only relevant for some external HDMI setups; it is not required to stream a file.
Send a file to a streaming server with FFmpeg
Ubuntu’s FFmpeg manual gives this generic example for sending a real-time file input to an RTMP server:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream-re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. The destination shown is a generic RTMP server, not a verified YouTube-specific or RTMPS command. See the Ubuntu FFmpeg manual.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"This is an illustrative H.264 1080p30 pattern using YouTube’s 10 Mbps video recommendation and 2-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. It is not a tested end-to-end YouTube command: availability of the named encoder and behavior depend on your installed FFmpeg build, and the exact RTMPS URL format must come from Live Control Room. Replace the quoted destination with the server URL and key in the format YouTube provides. Do not share the resulting command or logs if they contain the key. If your source is not 1080p30, adjust frame rate, GOP/keyframe interval, bitrate and other settings for the intended format and current YouTube guidance.
When FFmpeg is sending, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check that video and audio look and sound right, then start or confirm the live event as appropriate. YouTube advises testing representative motion and audio before the stream and monitoring stream health while live. Its guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Unable to locate package ffmpeg: check that the Ubuntu release is supported by the configured repositories and that Universe is enabled; runsudo apt updateafter correcting the repository configuration.- FFmpeg runs, but YouTube shows no preview: verify the server URL and stream key against the current Live Control Room event, check for accidental spaces or quoting errors, and confirm the selected RTMP/RTMPS endpoint.
- The connection is rejected: confirm the event is ready to receive an encoder feed and that the key belongs to that event. If you exposed the key, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Video stutters or the stream health warning appears: lower the bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution/frame rate, then retest. The recommended bitrate is not proof that your uplink can sustain it.
- Audio is missing or distorted: check that the input includes the expected audio stream and that FFmpeg maps and encodes it as intended; test the preview before going live.
- Your chosen codec or encoder is unavailable: inspect the build information printed by
ffmpeg -versionand use a codec/encoder supported by that build and by YouTube’s current live guidance.
