For YouTube Live in Larix Broadcaster, start with a 2-second keyframe interval and choose a bitrate that matches your resolution and frame rate—and that your mobile upload connection can sustain. YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. For common H.264 settings, its starting recommendations range from 4 Mbps for 720p30 to 12 Mbps for 1080p60.
Recommended YouTube Live settings to start with
YouTube’s encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These H.264 values are starting points, not a guarantee that a mobile connection can sustain the stream. The YouTube Help table’s publication year is not shown in the source consulted on October 3, 2026.
| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps, including 720p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
Use the row for the stream’s actual output—not the phone’s camera recording setting if Larix sends a different resolution or frame rate. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than forcing a higher-quality target.
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Set Larix’s keyframe control to 2 seconds when it is expressed in seconds. If the control uses frames, convert using the selected frame rate: 60 frames at 30 fps equals 2 seconds; 120 frames at 60 fps equals 2 seconds. These are arithmetic conversions, not claims about a particular Larix version’s interface.

Configure bitrate, rate control, and transport
Bitrate and rate control
Choose the H.264 bitrate from YouTube’s resolution-and-frame-rate guidance above, then confirm the mobile upload can handle it consistently. YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) encoding in its encoder guidance. If Larix exposes rate control, use CBR for this YouTube-oriented setup when available.
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported streaming protocols and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Use RTMPS if the Larix destination and YouTube stream configuration support it.

Video and audio codecs
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, and AAC or MP3 audio options for RTMP/RTMPS. Device and Larix support can vary, so select only a codec that your actual app and phone can encode. YouTube’s listed stereo audio setting is 128 Kbps; its guidance specifies AAC for 5.1 surround.
Test the phone’s upload before going live
- Check the available upload capacity. Run a speed test on the same mobile connection and in conditions representative of the broadcast. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not prove the connection will remain stable.
- Configure a private or otherwise suitable test stream. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, protocol, and audio before evaluating quality.
- Include representative sound and motion. Test the kind of movement and audio the real event will contain. A static, silent test may not reveal issues that appear during an active broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages. Watch for warnings during the test and the event. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation includes warnings for low bitrate and keyframe intervals that are too long.
- Reduce the target if the connection is unstable. Step down the resolution or frame rate and select the corresponding bitrate target; prioritize a stable stream over a setting the phone’s connection cannot sustain.
Why Larix examples may show lower bitrates
Gcore’s Larix guide gives service examples of 720p30 at 2 Mbps and 1080p30 at 4 Mbps, paired with a 60-frame (2-second) keyframe interval. Those are Gcore examples, not YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrate targets or universal Larix requirements. For YouTube, use YouTube’s table as the baseline, then adapt downward if the available connection requires it.

Troubleshooting bitrate and keyframes
- YouTube reports low bitrate: The connection or encoder may not be sustaining the selected rate. Test the connection again and lower the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate until stream health is acceptable.
- YouTube warns that keyframes are too far apart: Set the interval to 2 seconds and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds. If Larix uses a frame count, use the equivalent for the selected frame rate.
- The stream looks poor despite meeting a bitrate target: Confirm the actual outgoing resolution and frame rate, not merely the phone’s capture setting. Re-test with representative motion and sound; YouTube’s bitrate guidance depends on output resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- The stream is unstable on mobile data: A momentary speed test may not reflect performance during the broadcast. Choose a lower quality setting that the connection can maintain and keep monitoring stream health.
- RTMPS is unavailable in the app or destination setup: YouTube lists RTMP as supported too. Use a supported protocol and verify the Larix destination and YouTube stream configuration agree.
Or let it run in the cloud
Larix is a phone-based way to encode and send a live feed. If your goal is instead to keep an uploaded video playing continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
