YouTube can play playlist videos one after another, and you can turn on Loop to repeat the playlist from the beginning when it reaches the end. But that does not guarantee unattended playback forever: YouTube may pause to ask whether you are still watching or stop Autoplay after inactivity. Playing with your phone screen off is a separate feature and, in the YouTube mobile apps, requires YouTube Premium.
What “continuous playback” means on YouTube
- Playlist progression: YouTube advances to the next video in a playlist. This is ordinary playlist playback.
- Playlist repeat: The Loop or Repeat control starts the playlist over after its last video.
- Autoplay: When enabled, YouTube starts another related video after the current video ends. This is different from repeating a playlist.
- Background playback: This lets eligible videos continue in the mobile app when you leave it or turn off the screen. It is separate from playlist progression and repeat.
So, if you want the same playlist to cycle, enable playlist repeat. If you want playback to continue while you are away, be aware that inactivity stops and confirmation prompts can still interrupt it.
How to loop a YouTube playlist
The controls can look different across devices and YouTube may update its interface. Start playback from a video that is part of the playlist, then use the playlist’s repeat control.
On a computer
- Open a video that belongs to the playlist.
- Expand the playlist panel if it is collapsed.
- Click Loop in the playlist controls. The playlist will repeat after its last video.
On a phone or tablet
- Start playing the playlist in the YouTube app.
- Open the playlist control box beneath the video.
- Tap Loop to repeat the playlist. On Android, tapping Loop again changes the setting to repeat only the current video, so check the control if playback is not cycling through the full list.
On a TV or game console
- Select and play the playlist.
- Open the playback controls.
- Choose Repeat until the indicator shows that the playlist—not just one video—is repeating.
Why playback may still stop
YouTube may ask whether you are still watching
With Autoplay on, YouTube says the prompt “Video paused. Continue watching?” can appear before 30 minutes of uninterrupted viewing on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. Select Yes to continue. These are YouTube’s stated product behavior intervals, not guarantees that a particular session will run uninterrupted for that long. YouTube Help: Take a break or stop watching.

Autoplay may stop after inactivity
YouTube says Autoplay can stop automatically after 30 minutes when connected to a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi. Autoplay controls whether a related video starts after one ends; do not mistake it for the playlist Loop control. YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
Your screen is off or the app is in the background
On mobile, background playback is a YouTube Premium feature in the YouTube apps. Availability depends on location, settings, and whether the video is eligible. Premium is not needed just to advance through or repeat a playlist while watching in the app. YouTube Help: Use your YouTube Premium benefits.

You are using a queue, not a saved playlist
A queue in a computer browser does not save when you close the browser. To keep videos for later, save them to Watch Later or to a playlist instead. YouTube Help: Add videos to your queue.
Troubleshoot a playlist that will not repeat
- It stops after the final video: Confirm that playlist Loop or Repeat is on; Autoplay alone starts related videos and is not the same setting.
- Only one video repeats: On Android, tap Loop again to cycle away from repeat-current-video mode and check that the playlist repeat indicator is active.
- A prompt interrupts playback: Respond to “Video paused. Continue watching?”; YouTube’s documented prompt behavior can interrupt unattended sessions.
- Playback stops after you close the browser: If you were using a queue, it is not saved on browser close. Use Watch Later or a playlist for a saved list.
- The video stops when you lock your phone: Playlist repeat does not enable background play. In the YouTube mobile app, background play requires Premium and remains subject to location, settings, and video eligibility.
