Wirecast can send a continuous stream to YouTube and has documented behavior for reconnecting after internet service returns, but the available official guidance does not establish that it can run indefinitely without supervision. A 24/7 stream depends on the source, computer, Wirecast, network, YouTube event, and power—not just the encoder. Plan to monitor the stream and recover from failures; do not treat a successful start as a guarantee of unattended operation.
What Wirecast’s reconnect behavior does—and does not—mean
Telestream’s version history documents a fix stating that Wirecast would automatically reconnect after an internet connection was restored. That is evidence of a particular recovery behavior after connectivity returns, not a promise that every outage will recover cleanly or that Wirecast will restart after a crash, operating-system reboot, or power failure. The official material reviewed does not state a supported maximum continuous runtime or an unattended 24/7 service guarantee.
YouTube lists Wirecast among its encoders, but being listed or recognized by YouTube does not establish uptime, automatic recovery, or suitability for every production. Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.4, released September 16, 2026, as its current public version; it also records a YouTube destination authentication fix in 16.5.1. Check the version history and your installed release when diagnosing destination or authentication issues.
What must stay reliable for a 24/7 stream
Think of the entire operating chain as the reliability unit. A failure at any link can interrupt the broadcast even if Wirecast itself is functioning.

- Computer and Wirecast: Keep the machine powered and prevent sleep or unintended shutdown. The reviewed official guidance does not establish automatic application relaunch after a Wirecast or computer crash.
- Network: Make sure sustained upload capacity can handle the full stream bitrate, including fluctuations and other users on the connection.
- YouTube event: Confirm the correct event and stream destination are selected, and that the public stream is actually visible.
- Power: Consider what happens after a power interruption; internet reconnection behavior does not itself restart a computer or encoder.
- Recording and oversight: Monitor audio and video quality, and verify local archive files are valid and continue growing if you rely on them.
Set up Wirecast and YouTube for a more resilient stream
1. Check channel eligibility and event controls
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to livestream. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, auto-start and auto-stop can let an encoder control starting or stopping the event. These controls do not restart Wirecast or the operating system after a crash or power loss.
2. Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, its recommended video bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps. Select a bitrate within that range that your tested connection can sustain; total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving upload headroom, including a 20% margin, and shared network use can reduce what is available to the streaming computer. Use RTMPS where supported.
Do not choose settings solely for peak image quality. A lower, stable bitrate is more useful for a continuous stream than a higher setting that repeatedly exceeds available upload capacity.

3. Test the actual production before relying on it
- Build a representative test: Use the intended audio and picture conditions, including the motion level of the real program. High-motion video and audio can expose problems that a static test does not.
- Configure the encoder in advance: Set up the Wirecast destination and YouTube event before the planned start, rather than making critical changes during a failure.
- Preview in Live Control Room: Check that YouTube receives the feed and that the picture and sound are correct.
- Verify the viewer-facing stream: Confirm the event appears on the channel or watch page and check it on a mobile device as well.
- Exercise backup failover: If you have a backup encoder, test the rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection. Do not assume the backup works until you have tested it.
- Check local recording: If you are recording locally, confirm the archive file is valid and its size continues to grow during the test.
4. Keep monitoring after launch
YouTube advises continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality. For an unattended period, arrange a person or monitoring process to notice a frozen picture, missing audio, encoder disconnect, or a stream that is no longer visible to viewers. Test your recovery steps before you need them: who can inspect the computer, restart Wirecast, check the network, or switch to a backup encoder?
Understand YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise that a 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full, and it also does not say that streams over 12 hours are never archived. If a complete recording matters, make a separate local recording and verify that the file is growing and intact.
YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need to rewind a continuous broadcast, make that limitation clear and consider whether a sequence of shorter events better fits the viewing experience.
