You can send a pre-recorded video to YouTube Live with GStreamer, but looping a single video, encoding and muxing it, and delivering it to YouTube are separate jobs. GStreamer’s documented multifilesrc loop=true repeats a sequence of sequentially named files; it is not documented as a general switch for looping one video file. For a single video, use a playback mechanism that seeks back to the beginning on end-of-stream and keeps timestamps suitable for a continuous live stream. Then encode and mux the audio/video into a format accepted by YouTube, and send it to the current ingest address and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need to build
A working setup has three parts. Treat each separately so a failure in playback is not confused with a YouTube connection problem:
- Playback and repetition: read the file and repeat it when playback ends. For one video, the loop behavior must come from your playback application or a verified plugin—not from assuming
multifilesrc loop=truerepeats any single file. - Encoding and muxing: decode the source as needed, convert its streams to formats and caps your selected encoders accept, encode video and audio, then mux the streams into FLV for the RTMP example below.
- Delivery: send the muxed stream to the stream-specific address and key provided by YouTube. GStreamer’s
rtmpsinkdocumentation demonstrates sending FLV over RTMP, but its localhost test command is not a ready-made YouTube pipeline. GStreamer’s rtmpsink documentation describes the sink and example.
The commands and element names available depend on your operating system, GStreamer build, and installed plugins. The official GStreamer tutorials explain automatic decoding with uridecodebin and the use of conversion elements such as videoconvert, videoscale, videorate, audioconvert, and audioresample; they do not establish one universal single-file loop command for YouTube Live. See the handy elements tutorial and GStreamer tools tutorial.
Choose the right loop method
One video file
Use an application-level playback loop or a specific element whose documentation confirms it repeats a single media file. A common design is to handle end-of-stream, seek to the beginning, and resume playback while keeping the outgoing live timestamps continuous. The exact implementation depends on your GStreamer version and playback architecture. A simple seek can produce a timestamp discontinuity or a visible/audio glitch at the boundary if the playback and muxing design does not handle it. The official references reviewed here do not validate a universal one-line gst-launch-1.0 recipe for this case, so do not treat an unverified command as a seamless-loop guarantee.

Sequentially named files or image frames
multifilesrc reads sequentially named files, and its loop property repeats the sequence after all files have been read. The documented example uses numbered PNG images. This is suitable for a frame sequence when the source pattern and downstream handling are configured accordingly; it does not demonstrate looping an arbitrary single video file. See the multifilesrc reference.
Build and validate the GStreamer output pipeline
1. Check the local elements and media negotiation
Before assembling a long-running pipeline, check which source, decoder, conversion, encoder, muxer, and RTMP sink elements exist in your installation. Decode the actual file and inspect the negotiated video and audio streams. If downstream elements reject the decoded formats, add the relevant conversion adapters: video conversion, scaling, or frame-rate conversion for video; audio conversion or resampling for audio. These adapters address format negotiation; they do not themselves provide the repeat behavior.

2. Select compatible encoders and muxing
For the RTMP example, the sink expects FLV media. The output path therefore needs encoded streams compatible with the chosen FLV muxer and YouTube’s current ingest requirements, followed by flvmux and an RTMP-capable sink. Encoder names and availability vary across installations. GStreamer’s reference example uses ffenc_flv with a test pattern and localhost server; that legacy element is not guaranteed to exist in a current build, and the example is not a YouTube command. Do not copy it as if it were a complete production pipeline.
The GStreamer tutorials also show H.264 video and AAC audio being repackaged into MP4. That illustrates encoding and muxing concepts, but an MP4 output pipeline is not by itself a YouTube RTMP delivery recipe. Confirm that your selected encoders and muxer produce the streams expected by the transport you choose.

3. Send to the current YouTube RTMP endpoint
GStreamer documents this output-end shape:
gst-launch-1.0 -v videotestsrc ! ffenc_flv ! flvmux !
rtmpsink location='rtmp://localhost/path/to/stream live=1'
This is a documentation example using a test source and a localhost server. Replace the test source with your actual decoded and encoded playback branches, select elements installed in your build, and use the current YouTube address and stream name/key for your live stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and provides primary and backup addresses; it may supply the stream URL and stream name separately or in a combined form such as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Get the values for your configured stream rather than copying a URL from an old tutorial. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Keep the stream key private. Do not paste it into public commands, source code, screenshots, logs, or a shared configuration file. If a pipeline requires it in a location string, use a private environment or secret-handling method appropriate to your application, and avoid exposing the resolved value in verbose output.

RTMP or HLS?
YouTube documents RTMP (including RTMPS), HLS, and DASH ingestion. The appropriate choice depends on your encoder and transport support; the steps above describe the RTMP/RTMPS path. HLS is a separate segmented-delivery configuration, not a transport you get by pointing a generic RTMP sink at an HLS URL.
| Protocol | What matters for this setup |
|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | GStreamer’s documented rtmpsink path sends FLV media to an RTMP URL. Use the endpoint and stream name/key supplied for the configured YouTube stream. |
| HLS | YouTube documents higher latency than continuous RTMP because HLS sends segments. Its HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte range, and HTTPS POST/PUT. It requires an HLS protocol/key selection and the HTTPS stream URL in Live Control Room. Do not apply these requirements to RTMP. See YouTube Help’s HLS setup guidance. |
YouTube’s HLS guidance lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio for that HLS context. Do not infer that a generic RTMP pipeline can emit valid HLS or that the HLS-specific settings are RTMP requirements.

Check YouTube’s live status and content rules
Use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that the configured stream is receiving data and to review stream health. The Live Streaming API distinguishes states such as active (data is being received), inactive (not receiving), and error; health states include good and ok. These YouTube-side indicators help separate an ingest or connection issue from local decoding, encoding, or playback errors.
Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights to use every video and audio track. A pre-recorded format does not exempt a stream from copyright rules, and repeated playback does not make content original. YouTube’s monetization review can also consider reused content separately from copyright permission; check the current YouTube policies for your channel and content rather than assuming that permission alone guarantees monetization eligibility.
Troubleshoot by locating the failing stage
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GStreamer reports a missing element | Plugin installation or build | Check whether the named source, decoder, encoder, muxer, conversion element, or sink is installed and available in this GStreamer build. Choose an available compatible element; do not assume the legacy ffenc_flv example exists. |
| File opens but a branch will not link or negotiate | Decoding and caps negotiation | Inspect the decoded audio/video streams and negotiated caps. Add the needed conversion, scaling, frame-rate, or resampling adapter, then confirm the selected encoder accepts the resulting format. |
| Video plays once and stops | Loop control | Confirm that your single-file playback application handles end-of-stream and seeks back to the start. multifilesrc loop=true applies to its sequential-file behavior, not a generic single-video loop. |
| Playback repeats but glitches at the boundary | Loop timestamps or muxing | Check how the playback design handles the seek, timestamps, audio/video synchronization, and muxer continuity. The reviewed documentation does not guarantee a seamless loop; test the exact implementation and source material. |
| Local pipeline runs but YouTube is inactive or errors | Endpoint, key, or ingest | Verify the current stream-specific URL and key in Live Control Room/API configuration, confirm the selected protocol matches the pipeline, and check YouTube’s receiving and health state. Do not reuse a stale endpoint. |
| YouTube receives data but reports an unhealthy stream | Encoded output | Review the selected encoder output, muxing, and protocol compatibility against YouTube’s current requirements. Separate a locally successful pipeline from a healthy, ingestible stream. |
