YouTube’s encoding, bandwidth, testing, and monitoring guidance matters whichever app you use.
Which is better for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
There is no evidence-based universal winner for continuous streaming. Streamlabs Desktop documents a guided onboarding and setup workflow; OBS Studio documents system requirements and cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee streaming capability. Neither reviewed source promises uninterrupted operation or compares 24/7 endurance under identical conditions.
| What matters | Streamlabs Desktop | OBS Studio | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Its quick start covers onboarding, connecting a channel, video settings, overlays, and testing; YouTube is listed as a supported platform. Streamlabs quick start | The reviewed materials establish system requirements, but not a directly comparable guided workflow. | Streamlabs documents a guided path. That alone does not establish which app is easier for every user. |
| Hardware and workload | Published system recommendations vary with content, other programs running, and hardware. Streamlabs system requirements | OBS identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors affecting CPU needs. Its requirements page says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS system requirements | Do not assume one app uses fewer resources without a controlled test using the same computer, settings, and scene. |
| 24/7 continuity | No reviewed official source establishes unattended restart behavior or comparative uptime. | No reviewed official source establishes unattended restart behavior or comparative uptime. | Test recovery and monitor the actual setup rather than treating either application as fail-proof. |
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8 GB minimum RAM and 16 GB or more recommended, along with a recommended SSD of 512 GB or more and Ethernet. Treat these as Streamlabs’ published guidance, not a guarantee or a universal minimum for every 24/7 workload. OBS’s cited system-requirements page is dated August 25, 2021; check the current application and operating-system requirements before installing.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop if…
- You want to follow the documented onboarding path for connecting a channel, configuring video, setting up overlays, and testing.
- Your stream benefits from the overlays and scene elements you plan to build, and the computer has enough headroom for that workload.
Choose OBS Studio if…
- You prefer to configure your own scenes and encoding workflow.
- You are prepared to validate performance with your actual encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity rather than relying on a basic system specification.
These are workflow considerations, not a claim that either application is more stable or lighter on matched hardware.

Can OBS or Streamlabs run 24/7?
They can be configured to send a live feed to YouTube, but the reviewed official documentation does not establish either as a guaranteed unattended 24/7 system. Continuous operation depends on the complete chain: the application, computer, encoder, power, network, YouTube ingest, and a plan for detecting and handling failures.
Before relying on either app, rehearse on the computer, scene collection, and network you will actually use. This is a practical precaution based on YouTube’s testing and monitoring guidance and the applications’ workload caveats; no official source prescribes a particular rehearsal duration.
Set up the stream for YouTube
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check eligibility before troubleshooting an encoder that cannot start a broadcast. YouTube live-streaming eligibility

2. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and codec
Base the output on the content, available computer headroom, and stable upload capacity. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where the encoder supports it. Follow YouTube’s current encoder-settings page for codec-specific values and supported combinations. YouTube live encoder settings
For H.264, YouTube lists these bitrate figures for the specified output modes (page does not state a publication year):
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 figures, not a promise that a connection with that nominal speed will sustain a broadcast. Use the current YouTube table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs rather than extrapolating from these rows.

3. Connect the encoder using the YouTube stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. In Streamlabs Desktop or OBS Studio, choose YouTube as the service and paste the key in the stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If you replace or reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder too. Labels and exact menu locations can change between application versions, so verify the current UI rather than following an outdated screenshot.
4. Check upload capacity and network stability
YouTube recommends keeping the total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth with about 20% headroom. Account for both primary and backup bitrate when both encoders may send data. Run an upload speed test under realistic network conditions; YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A disruption can break the stream. YouTube streaming tips YouTube does not state a single upload-speed number that suits every stream, since required capacity varies with stream bitrate and other network use.
- Use wired Ethernet when practical. Streamlabs recommends it, and YouTube emphasizes connection reliability; Ethernet is not a guarantee.
- Keep other household or office uploads from consuming the capacity reserved for the stream.
- If using a cable to connect, an Ethernet cable is a straightforward physical setup item; no particular brand or model is established as necessary.
5. Test the complete broadcast before going public
Send a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Check the full scene, motion, overlays, and audio—not just whether the encoder says it is connected. YouTube’s event guidance says to set up the encoder at least two hours ahead and start it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. That is event-planning advice, not a formal 24/7 reliability standard. YouTube streaming tips

Plan monitoring and recovery
A stream that starts successfully can still fail later. YouTube advises testing and monitoring audio and video; for a long-running broadcast, assign someone or establish a process to notice problems and act on them.
- Watch stream health and the YouTube preview for dropped frames, interruptions, or unexpected video and audio.
- If recording a local archive, verify that the file is being created and continues to grow.
- Test a backup encoder or failover process before depending on it. YouTube describes backup-encoder testing, but that does not guarantee seamless recovery in every setup.
- Know how you will regain access to the computer and restart or reconfigure the broadcast if the application, power, or network fails.
Neither the reviewed OBS nor Streamlabs documentation establishes a comparative automatic recovery advantage. A backup is a separate continuity measure, not proof that the primary setup cannot fail.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube will not accept the broadcast | Channel eligibility, selected service, or stream key | Confirm channel verification and restrictions, then verify the selected YouTube stream and key in both Live Control Room and the encoder. |
| Stream health reports unstable connection or dropped frames | Upload capacity, competing traffic, or network disruption | Run an upload speed test, reduce competing uploads, check total bitrate against available upload with YouTube’s recommended headroom, and use wired Ethernet if practical. |
| Video or audio is missing in the preview | Scene source, audio routing, or encoder configuration | Test the full scene and audio path locally or in a private/unlisted test; confirm the Live Control Room preview before making it public. |
| The computer becomes overloaded | Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, or other running programs | Reduce workload or output demands and retest. Both application guidance and OBS’s requirements caution that workload affects capability; do not infer a universal app advantage. |
| The stream stops and does not resume | Application, computer, power, network, or ingest interruption | Check the Live Control Room and encoder status, restore the connection, and follow the tested restart or backup-encoder procedure. The reviewed documentation does not promise unattended recovery in either app. |
