You can’t use Vimeo Livestream’s 24/7 Extended streaming mode to simulcast the same event to YouTube. Vimeo’s Extended streaming is an Enterprise add-on for continuous RTMP events, but it disables simulcasting, recording, and DVR. To stream continuously on YouTube, use a separate YouTube encoder setup or a service built to keep uploaded videos live; use Vimeo’s normal event simulcast only for a separate, finite event.

Choose the setup that matches your goal

Option What it does Main limitation
Vimeo Extended streaming Keeps a Vimeo RTMP event active while an encoder sends video; available as an Enterprise add-on. Cannot simulcast, record, or use DVR while Extended streaming is enabled.
Vimeo event simulcast to YouTube Sends a regular Vimeo event to YouTube through an account integration or a custom RTMP destination. It is a separate finite-event workflow, not compatible with Extended streaming.
Independent YouTube encoder feed Sends a feed directly to YouTube and can be designed for continuous operation. You must validate the encoder, account eligibility, ingest, and recovery process; the Vimeo documentation does not establish a tested dual-platform relay.

If your requirement is specifically a 24/7 YouTube channel, set up and maintain the YouTube feed independently. Do not enable Vimeo Extended streaming expecting it to forward that feed to YouTube. Vimeo says the Extended mode cannot simulcast to other destinations (Vimeo: FAQ: Extended streaming mode).

Set up continuous streaming on Vimeo

This procedure creates a continuous Vimeo event, not a YouTube stream. Vimeo’s help documentation describes Extended streaming as an Enterprise add-on for RTMP events; contact your account manager or Vimeo sales to enable it. It is not available for Vimeo Live production mode.

  1. Confirm eligibility. Make sure the Vimeo account has Enterprise with the Extended streaming add-on enabled.
  2. Create an event using an RTMP encoder workflow. Use an external encoder that can continuously send video to the event. Vimeo’s Extended mode is for RTMP streams.
  3. Change the event settings. In the event, open Production. Turn off Record event and DVR, then turn on Extended stream. Vimeo’s interface labels may vary by account.
  4. Configure and start the encoder. Send the event’s RTMP feed and verify picture, audio, and network stability. Keep the encoder and its internet connection operating; the event remains active while Vimeo receives the signal.
  5. End the event manually when finished. Extended mode does not end automatically on a normal event duration limit; the operator must end it.

Plan for no Vimeo archive: Extended streams cannot be recorded or saved to the Vimeo library, and DVR is unavailable. If you need an archive, arrange a separate local or external recording and verify it independently. Test what happens after an encoder, power, or network failure before relying on the event for unattended use. Vimeo’s documentation does not establish a recovery guarantee for those failures (Extended streaming FAQ; How to enable extended streaming).

Why Vimeo’s normal YouTube simulcast is different

Vimeo’s standard event simulcast can send an event to YouTube, but it is not the Extended streaming feature. Vimeo documents two ways to configure that finite-event workflow:

Connect a YouTube account in Vimeo

  1. Open the Vimeo event’s Destinations panel.
  2. Connect and authorize the YouTube account.
  3. Set the YouTube privacy setting for the destination.
  4. Enable the YouTube destination toggle for the event.

Vimeo documents this integration for eligible Advanced or Premium accounts, or Enterprise accounts with Events. The current documented limit is up to 10 integrated destinations, but that limit does not make the feature compatible with Extended streaming.

Use a custom RTMP destination

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
  2. In the Vimeo event, add a custom RTMP destination and enter the YouTube URL and key.
  3. Start the encoder and check the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room.
  4. If the YouTube stream is scheduled, be prepared to press Go live in YouTube Live Control Room when the feed is ready.

Vimeo documents up to 20 simultaneous custom RTMP destinations for ordinary simulcast. These destination limits apply to the normal event workflow, not Extended streaming. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the channel.

Set up a direct YouTube encoder stream

For YouTube-only continuous playback, use YouTube’s encoder workflow rather than Vimeo Extended streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete this check well before your intended start (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

  1. Enable live streaming. Sign in to the eligible YouTube channel and complete any verification or activation prompts. Wait for activation if this is the channel’s first live stream.
  2. Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream using an encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
  3. Configure your encoder. Choose RTMP or preferably RTMPS for encrypted ingest, then enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Use H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Select a resolution and bitrate that your encoder, upload connection, and content can sustain; avoid treating the platform maximum as a recommended bitrate.
  4. Start the encoder and verify the preview. Check video, audio, and stream health in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. If the stream is scheduled, press Go live when required.
  5. Keep the feed running and monitor it. A 24/7 feed depends on the encoder, power, and network continuing to send video. Define who will notice a failure and how the feed will be restarted; the YouTube setup instructions do not promise automatic recovery for every encoder or connection failure.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 stream will produce one complete archive under that policy (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Check duration and encoder limits before choosing Vimeo

Vimeo’s standard event duration and encoder limits depend on plan. These figures are listed in Vimeo’s current help documentation; check the terms for your account because plan limits can change.

Vimeo plan or mode Documented duration / simultaneous streams Documented encoder limit
Advanced Up to 2 simultaneous streams, each limited to 12 hours Up to 5,000 kbps and 30 fps
Premium Up to 3 simultaneous streams, each limited to 12 hours Up to 5,000 kbps and 30 fps
Enterprise, standard event Up to 3 simultaneous streams, with a 12-hour limit each Up to 9,000 kbps and 60 fps
Enterprise with Extended streaming Continuous RTMP event while encoder signal continues; operator ends it manually Up to 9,000 kbps and 60 fps, per Vimeo’s Enterprise limit

The Extended add-on changes the duration model, not the restrictions on recording, DVR, or simulcasting. Vimeo’s live-events documentation lists the standard plan limits (Vimeo: FAQ: Live events).

Can one feed run continuously on both Vimeo and YouTube?

Vimeo’s documented Extended mode cannot simulcast to YouTube. Sending a feed independently to both platforms may be possible with a different encoder-output architecture, but the available documentation does not verify a particular relay or confirm that it meets both platforms’ current account, ingest, duration, and operational requirements. Validate such a design with both services before depending on it; do not treat Vimeo’s ordinary event simulcast as a 24/7 workaround.

Common problems and fixes

  • The YouTube destination is missing or unavailable. Confirm that the Vimeo account is eligible for normal event simulcasting and that the YouTube account is connected and authorized. This feature is distinct from Extended streaming.
  • YouTube shows no incoming video. Check that the encoder is sending to the YouTube server URL, that the stream key matches the intended event, and that the encoder is running. Re-copy the credentials in YouTube Studio if needed, and keep the key private.
  • The scheduled YouTube event has an incoming feed but is not public. Open Live Control Room and press Go live if the scheduled RTMP stream requires manual confirmation.
  • The Vimeo Extended event stops receiving video. Check the encoder process, power, network connection, and RTMP credentials. Vimeo documents the event as active while the encoder signal is incoming; do not assume a dropped signal will be recovered automatically.
  • The stream ends at a duration limit. Standard Vimeo Advanced, Premium, and Enterprise events have documented 12-hour limits per stream. Extended streaming is a separate Enterprise add-on and applies only to RTMP events.
  • The stream has no archive or rewind control. For Vimeo Extended, this is expected: recording and DVR are turned off. For YouTube, do not expect a complete archive from a stream lasting 12 hours or more.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating an encoder at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream a camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.
  • The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
