You can run a prerecorded ambient video stream around the clock from a Windows VPS by looping the media with FFmpeg, sending it to YouTube Live, and arranging reliable process recovery and monitoring. For a simple loop, FFmpeg is usually the more practical starting point; choose OBS when you need scenes, overlays, or interactive desktop controls, and first verify that OBS keeps working on your specific VPS after Remote Desktop disconnects.
Choose the right approach for your stream
A Windows VPS makes sense when your workflow or software requires Windows and you want the stream to run on a remote machine. The key decision is whether you need a composition interface or simply want to repeat prerecorded media.

Prepare YouTube Live and your media
Check the channel and stream setup
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its current stream URL and stream key. Enter those details in your encoder. YouTube treats the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories, and logs, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. Use consistent source files
For a playlist containing clips with different dimensions, frame rates, or audio characteristics, normalize them before streaming if mismatches would create distracting changes at transitions. FFmpeg playlists and normalization are implementation choices, not YouTube requirements. Test the transition between clips and listen for silence, abrupt volume changes, or gaps before relying on a long-running loop.
Set encoder output to YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. For H.264, its recommended bitrate is 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. These are platform ingest recommendations—not a guarantee that a VPS can encode the selected quality or sustain the required upload. Leave network headroom and test the VPS under sustained load. Do not select a resolution or bitrate solely because the VPS plan advertises a certain network speed. Confirm that the instance sustains both the encoder workload and upload rate with your actual video. CPU demand varies with the footage and encoding method; the available VPS examples do not establish a universal Windows instance size.
Loop the video with FFmpeg
For one file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option demonstrates the basic idea of repeating an input indefinitely. The following is a command pattern, not a ready-to-run command: replace the placeholders with your file, the ingest URL, and stream key; choose an encoder and output options that match YouTube’s current settings and your media.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "ambient-video.mp4" -f flv "[RTMPS ingest URL]/[stream key]"The exact options depend on the source file and chosen encoder. Configure constant bitrate, the selected resolution and frame rate, and a keyframe interval that follows YouTube’s guidance. Protect the key as a secret: putting it directly in a command can expose it through shell history, process inspection, or logs, depending on how the command is launched and the system configuration. Use a secure method appropriate to your VPS and restrict access to any configuration that contains it.
For multiple clips, build and test a playlist workflow rather than assuming that differently encoded files will join cleanly. A third-party guide demonstrates looping and playlist techniques, but its automatic-restart service uses Linux systemd; it is not a Windows service recipe. Run it unattended on Windows
A continuous broadcast needs more than a command that works in a terminal. The encoder must start again after a crash and after a Windows restart, and you need a way to inspect its status and logs. The available implementation example demonstrates automatic restart with Linux systemd, not a native Windows configuration. Do not copy its service file into Windows or assume that an interactive command will survive logout or reboot.
Before committing to a Windows process supervisor or startup arrangement, verify it against the VPS’s Windows image, account and session model, and the exact encoder. In particular, test a full Windows reboot and an RDP disconnect—not just a brief idle period—and confirm that publishing continues without an interactive desktop. The documented OBS reports describe graphics-session problems in some Windows VPS setups, so behavior should not be generalized to every provider or GPU configuration.
Test stream health and plan recovery
- Start with a short test. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended video and audio before leaving the stream unattended. YouTube recommends testing and checking its stream-health messages. YouTube encoder guidance
- Watch the remote stream, not only the local process. A running FFmpeg or OBS process does not prove that viewers are receiving healthy video. Check the live output and YouTube’s health indicators.
- Investigate dropped frames. OBS’s help guidance says rising dropped-frame counts can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce the bitrate or resolve the connection issue, then test again. OBS Help Portal
- Exercise recovery deliberately. Confirm how the selected Windows setup restarts the encoder after a process failure and after reboot. Check logs and verify that YouTube resumes receiving the stream; do not assume a Linux supervisor example applies to Windows.
Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24/7 archive
YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s archive as its only recording. If a complete archive matters, arrange a separate recording path and check that recordings are growing and usable. YouTube: Archive live streams
