If your Vimeo Livestream Studio broadcast is silent on YouTube, first find out whether the silence affects every viewer. Then trace the sound from the source and Studio’s audio mixer to the encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room. Headphone silence alone does not prove the stream is silent: Studio’s local headphone monitoring is separate from stream audio.

First, find out who cannot hear the stream

Ask another viewer to check the live stream on a different device or network. This separates a viewer-specific playback problem from silence in the broadcast itself. Vimeo recommends checking whether all viewers have the issue; different network conditions can also affect individual viewers. Vimeo Help Center: troubleshooting audio issues.

  • Only one viewer hears silence: Have them check device volume, mute, selected audio output, and the browser or app. Compare playback on another device or network.
  • Every viewer hears silence: Trace the signal through Livestream Studio, the encoder output, and YouTube ingestion.
  • You hear nothing in your headphones: Check local monitoring separately before changing stream settings.

If the problem is intermittent or viewer reports differ, capture player debug logs while the issue is happening. Avoid including a private stream key in screenshots or support material.

Check the audio source and routing in Livestream Studio

In Livestream Studio, inspect the intended source in the Inputs settings and Audio Mixer. Studio lets you configure audio for individual inputs. In stereo mode, assign the left and right channels to the input fader; in mono mode, assign the appropriate individual channel. Confirm the intended microphone, camera audio, mixer, or audio-only input is selected and that its meter responds when sound is present. See Vimeo’s input audio settings guidance.

  1. Confirm the device is available. Check that the operating system recognizes the audio device and install any required driver. Studio can add an audio-only input from a supported system device; some devices need drivers. See Vimeo’s audio-only input instructions.
  2. Confirm the correct input and channels. Select the device you intend to use and verify the channel assignment and input level. Speak or play audio and watch the input meter.
  3. Follow the signal through the mix. Check mute and level controls, then watch the program output. Vimeo identifies Stream Out / Record Out as the typical representation for monitoring program audio. If an input meter moves but the program output does not, investigate mixer routing before changing YouTube settings. See input audio settings and Studio audio monitoring.

If Studio meters move but your headphones are silent

Studio’s headphone controls affect what you hear locally; they do not stop audio from reaching the stream or recording. Check the computer’s selected playback device, Studio’s headphone volume, and the source-monitoring buttons that select which audio sources you hear. Vimeo documents playback-output checks for Windows and Mac in its Livestream Studio monitoring guidance.

Test the YouTube preview or ask another viewer to check the stream. Do not use headphone silence as the sole evidence that the outgoing broadcast has no audio.

Check YouTube’s ingestion status and audio settings

Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream health indicator and any audio-specific message. YouTube lists missing audio, multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, incorrect sample rates, and more than two audio channels among possible ingestion errors. For the described RTMP/RTMPS workflow, YouTube expects a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3 and one audio stream. Follow the precise error shown in Live Control Room; do not change settings blindly. See YouTube’s live-stream error guidance.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS specify AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz for stereo audio, and a recommended stereo audio bitrate of 128 Kbps. The published recommendations differ for 5.1 surround sound, which YouTube supports over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular value caused your silence. Compare them with your encoder settings and the actual Live Control Room message. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

For a Livestream Studio destination, confirm that the event is using the intended YouTube Stream URL and Stream Key, and check that event’s preview and health information. Vimeo says its Studio-to-YouTube workflow changed as of October 2024 to use a YouTube Stream URL and Stream Key; older setup instructions may not match the current workflow. Never share your stream key: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. See Vimeo’s Studio-to-YouTube instructions.

Test the encoder output and a local recording

Check whether audio is present in the encoder preview and in a local recording or archive, if available. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and reviewing a local archive for audio or video problems. Use the results to narrow the fault:

This distinction is a diagnostic inference from YouTube’s guidance to separate source or encoder problems from outbound internet trouble. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Vimeo recommends restarting the encoder, testing with as few components as practical, removing and re-adding the audio source to create a fresh connection, and matching capture-device output settings such as bitrate and sample rate to the encoder. Check the cables and equipment feeding the input as well. Change one item at a time so you can tell which change affects the result. See Vimeo’s audio troubleshooting steps.

Check physical connections, then escalate with useful details

If the signal path points to a physical input problem, make sure the cable is fully seated, suitable for the device, and in good condition. Check the equipment feeding it. Some external microphones need their own power or particular settings; Mic versus Line selection, sample rate, and cable type can matter. Try a known-good cable only when the connection path suggests a cable fault—not as a default fix. See Vimeo’s audio troubleshooting guidance.

If the encoder preview has sound but multiple viewers still hear silence, assess upload stability and the outbound connection. When contacting Vimeo support, provide the encoder, operating system, and playback browser details, and capture debug logs while the problem is occurring. Keep stream keys and other private credentials out of logs and screenshots you share. YouTube also recommends checking outbound internet strength when encoder output looks and sounds healthy. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and Vimeo’s audio troubleshooting guidance.
