A 24/7 YouTube lofi stream is too long to rely on YouTube’s automatic archive alone: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you own and produce the stream, record it locally in OBS, split the recording into manageable files if useful, and move or delete older files according to a retention plan. Segments make files easier to handle; they do not reduce the space needed to keep all the footage.
Why a 24/7 stream needs its own archive plan
YouTube’s automatic archive is not a dependable full-length archive for a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends keeping a local archive as backup. That warning is not a guarantee that every long stream will be lost; it means you should not count on the platform copy for a 24/7 broadcast. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
The practical approach for a stream you own and produce is to record the outgoing program locally, then manage the resulting files so they do not accumulate indefinitely on your active disk. The three controls are recording bitrate, how long you retain recordings, and where completed files are stored.
Choose the archive approach
| Approach | What it is useful for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic archive | Convenient access to a platform copy when YouTube creates one. | The documented threshold is streams shorter than 12 hours; a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on this as the sole archive for a 24/7 broadcast. |
| OBS local recording | A channel owner can record the program being sent out and choose the recording path and format. | Recording consumes space on the selected storage until files are moved or removed. OBS’s guidance is for recording OBS output; it does not establish a supported way to capture another person’s stream. |
| FFmpeg segmentation | Creates timed files that can be easier to transfer, index, and delete under a retention policy. | Splitting does not reduce the total size if you keep every segment. Cuts may not land exactly on the requested time because video splits occur at keyframes. |
Record your own stream in OBS
1. Decide what you need to keep
Before recording, choose whether you need a continuous full archive, only recent recovery copies, or selected portions for later use. Set a retention window in hours or days and decide where completed files will go. Without a retention limit or a separate destination, continuous recording will eventually fill any finite disk.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Set the recording path and format
In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the recording section, including the recording path and format. OBS recommends MKV: if a recording stops ungracefully, such as after a power or application failure, the entire file is less likely to be corrupted. When you need an MP4 copy for compatibility, use OBS’s remux option after the recording is complete rather than choosing an ordinary MP4 recording as the only copy. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.
OBS’s format guidance notes that ordinary MP4 and MOV files require finalization and may not be recoverable if writing is interrupted. Fragmented MP4/MOV can offer resilience at chunk boundaries, but codec support and editing compatibility vary. For a straightforward resilient recording, MKV followed by remuxing when needed is the recommended route. Details are in the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

3. Estimate disk use from the actual output
There is no universal storage figure for a lofi stream: file size depends on the actual recording bitrate and how long you retain it. A useful estimate is:
Storage in bytes ≈ bitrate in bits per second × recording seconds ÷ 8.

For a more reliable estimate, record a representative sample using the OBS settings you intend to keep, note its size and duration, then scale that measured rate to your planned retention period. Include audio and any other recorded output in the sample. Leave room for active recordings and temporary files; do not choose a disk capacity based on a generic bitrate that may not match your stream.
4. Rotate files or offload completed recordings
Move completed recordings to a separate archive destination, such as an external hard drive, or delete files older than the retention window. If you keep a separate archive drive, determine its capacity from the measured recording rate, retention period, and budget. Moving files preserves them elsewhere; deleting them frees space but removes that copy.

Use FFmpeg segments when smaller files help
FFmpeg’s segment muxer can produce timed files and a segment list. This is useful when you want independent files for transfer, indexing, or automated cleanup. It is not compression: retaining every generated segment still uses approximately the same total bytes as keeping one continuous recording. Because video cuts happen at keyframes, a segment’s duration may differ from the requested duration. Consult the FFmpeg formats documentation for the segment muxer’s options.
Use segmentation together with a retention policy: move or delete segments outside the chosen window. Segmenting without removing or offloading old files only changes file organization, not total disk use.

What if you are watching someone else’s lofi stream?
The workflow above records OBS output that you own and produce. It does not establish an official, supported viewer-side method for continuously capturing another creator’s YouTube stream, nor does it settle the restrictions that apply to doing so. Check the creator’s permissions and applicable rules rather than treating a local recording workflow as authorization.
YouTube DVR is also not a substitute for a full archive. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and availability can also depend on the device or app version. See YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams.
Troubleshooting archive and storage problems
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: A 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording for a stream you produce rather than relying on the platform archive.
- OBS recording is unreadable after an interruption: Ordinary MP4/MOV files need finalization and may not be recoverable if writing stops abruptly. Record to MKV for resilience, then remux after a successful finish if you need MP4.
- The disk fills despite creating segments: Segments do not save space if all are retained. Add a retention rule that deletes older segments or move them to another destination.
- Segment files are not exactly the requested duration: Video segments are constrained by keyframe placement, so boundaries can vary. Treat the configured duration as a target, not an exact cut time.
- You are unsure what storage to buy: Measure a representative recording and calculate the space required for your retention period. Without the bitrate, retention window, and budget, no single capacity recommendation is reliable.
