To send a live video from FFmpeg to IBM Video Streaming and YouTube, use each service’s own ingest URL and stream key. Get IBM’s values from your channel’s Broadcast Settings, then create or select a YouTube live stream and use its separate ingest details. The services both support RTMPS, but their endpoints and credentials are not interchangeable.

The steps below explain the setup and the encoding choices. The command is illustrative rather than a verified, tested dual-destination command: confirm the options and output syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build before using it for an event.

Get the IBM Video Streaming ingest details

  1. Sign in to IBM Video Streaming and select the channel you want to broadcast to.

  2. Open Broadcast Settings, then Encoder Settings, and select View. Copy that channel’s RTMP URL and Stream Key. IBM’s instructions are in its Broadcast Settings guide.

    • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  3. Keep the key private. It may authorize someone to publish to your channel. Do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, or log.

Use the values issued for the selected channel; a general article cannot supply the correct URL or key for your account. IBM recommends manual configuration for third-party encoders. Its encoder setup guidance warns that legacy Ustream plug-ins or IBM credential-login flows can cause broadcasting issues.

Prepare YouTube as a separate destination

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.

  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides for that stream. Do not substitute the IBM URL or key: YouTube requires its own endpoint and credentials.

  3. If you choose RTMPS, use the YouTube RTMPS endpoint and the correct protocol, server, application path, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingest guide.

IBM also supports RTMPS, and its Broadcast Settings instructions show a channel-based URL format. RTMPS encrypts the connection to the ingest service; check each service’s own supplied endpoint rather than constructing one from the other service’s values. For YouTube’s available ingest methods and the higher latency associated with segmented HLS delivery, see its HLS setup instructions. The cited material does not establish IBM HLS ingest for this workflow.

Configure FFmpeg and choose how to publish

FFmpeg reads an input, optionally processes or encodes it, and writes output to a destination. Its command-line documentation describes the general workflow, and its protocol documentation covers RTMP-family URL syntax.

At a high level, an output uses the destination’s RTMP or RTMPS URL, with the service-issued stream key included in the service’s expected format. Use a placeholder while drafting, not a real key:

ffmpeg -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv "IBM_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL/IBM_STREAM_KEY"

This is a schematic example, not a ready-to-run IBM command: replace the placeholders with the exact values and format shown for your channel, and use encoding options appropriate to your input and destination. Do not assume that an IBM URL format or key works for YouTube.

Choose one output or two

If sending the same encoded stream to both, choose a profile that both destinations accept. If their requirements cannot be met by one profile, plan for separate output settings and validate each destination. A dual output also needs enough upload capacity for the combined outgoing traffic; leave headroom rather than treating your internet plan’s advertised speed as guaranteed sustained upload bandwidth.

Set resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframes

There is no single profile that should be copied blindly to both platforms. YouTube publishes destination guidance; IBM’s numeric example is specific to a Pearl-2 and cloud-transcoding setup. Confirm the stream’s actual configuration against your channel and encoder before going live.

Profile or setting Published guidance How to apply it
YouTube H.264, 1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended, according to YouTube’s encoder settings page accessed in 2026. Use as YouTube guidance for this codec, resolution, and frame rate—not as an IBM guarantee.
YouTube H.264, 720p30 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended, according to YouTube’s encoder settings page accessed in 2026. Use as YouTube guidance for this codec, resolution, and frame rate—not as an IBM guarantee.
IBM Pearl-2 example H.264 Main, 1280×720, 25 or 30 fps, 1200–4000 kbps video; AAC audio at 48 kHz and 128 kbps. IBM identifies this as a Pearl-2/cloud-transcoding example. It is an example for that setup, not a required FFmpeg profile or a universal IBM setting.

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 with HDR caveats, and allows up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the full codec- and resolution-specific guidance; it recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream to Google’s servers.

IBM’s Pearl-2 example uses one-second keyframes, which differs from YouTube’s general recommendation. Do not treat either figure as a universal setting for both services. If one encoded output is sent to both, select a keyframe interval and other settings compatible with both destinations; otherwise, use separately configured outputs where your FFmpeg setup allows it.

For the IBM-specific example, see the IBM Pearl-2 guide. The useful comparison points are codec support, resolution and frame rate, bitrate relative to sustained upload bandwidth, keyframe interval, latency, and whether the ingest connection uses RTMPS.

Test and monitor before the event

  1. Check that the IBM URL and key belong to the selected channel and were copied exactly. IBM’s app setup guidance notes that the key is case-sensitive.

  2. Confirm the YouTube output uses its own URL and key, including the correct RTMPS path and port if applicable.

  3. Test with representative movement and audio. A static screen alone may not reveal motion-related encoding or bandwidth problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Start the stream early enough to check the destination’s stream health and confirm that audio and video arrive as expected. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot connection and stream problems

  • IBM rejects the connection: Verify that the RTMP URL and key match the selected channel, have no extra spaces, and were entered with the right capitalization. Use manual RTMP configuration rather than a legacy Ustream plug-in or IBM login integration.

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that you selected the intended live stream and used its own ingest URL and key. For RTMPS, verify the protocol, server, application path, and port 443.

  • Publishing fails on a restricted network: Ask the network administrator to check outbound access. IBM’s firewall guidance lists outbound TCP 1935 for RTMP and discusses secure-ingest ports. Requirements depend on the account and network; consult current IBM guidance rather than hard-coding a port rule.

  • HDR or a codec is not accepted through YouTube RTMP: Consult YouTube’s HLS setup instructions for its HLS option and account for its higher delivery latency. Do not assume that YouTube’s HLS workflow is available for IBM.

  • A key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised and use the service’s account controls to replace or reset it if available. Avoid sharing keys in shell history, screenshots, or logs.
